Would You Pay For a View?

Effective May 7, US Airways will begin charging passengers an extra $5 for either a window or aisle seat in the first few rows in the coach cabin. The initial launch of the “Choice Seat Program” will allow passengers to make this selection during their online bookings and will be expanded to their airport kiosks and ticket counters later in the year.

Even though $5 may not seem like a lot for a view, who’s to say what airlines will be charging for next? In this current economy where airlines are cutting back to save costs, passengers will find themselves with less and less amenities and more and more aggravation. And guess who will have to deal with the disgruntled passengers? ;-)

So, would you pay an extra $5 for a window or aisle seat?

Does that mean that they discount the poor person that sits in the middle? Or what about charging me less if I do not bring the maximum amount of luggage. It really does seem like the consumer is being penalized for everything here, including more restrictions and higher costs. I cringe at what will happen when we fly with our boys next fall. I need to find out from our friend if the tickets were booked so I can investigate what that particular airlines allows or does not allow.

I have to say I do not envy the personnel that work for the airlines (like you Kailani). I am sure fed up passengers must not be pleasant to deal with. Good luck with more “fun” coming your way.

For some reason I feel less claustrophobic in a window seat. Plus I don\’t have peoples butts in my face when boarding & deplaning :) So I guess I would have to pay the extra. But they woud have to discount my husband who usually gets stuck in the middle.

The aisle seat is more appealing to me, but they have a heck of a nerve charging for it.

I’ve found that the aisle seats are easier if traveling with kids, but if traveling alone, I definitely prefer a window. $5 doesn’t seem like a lot, especially when compared to the cost of a plane ticket to begin with, but I agree – once they start charging for these ‘conveniences’, where will it stop? Sigh…

I would not pay it. I think it’s really stupid that they were charge extra for the front few rows, but not the back? I would just sit in the back then. I understand that $5 is not a lot, but I also remember when they used to feed meals in the flight and that was included. So it’s just a matter of what will they charge for next! I do not envy your job as people are very disgruntled already!!!

The phrase “nickel and dimed” comes to mind. I think its ridiculous to charge for a window or aisle seat. So, what happens if the rest of the plane is filled and the only seats left are by the window or aisle in the first part of the cabin? Do I have to pay $5 for that seat even though its the only one left? Totally stupid. I avoid flying because its stressful…in part because you are hurling through the air at what, a million miles an hour, in a fuel filled capsule, but also because you get terrible service and you get nickel and dimed. And if you are pregnant you should automatically get an aisle seat and not be charged for it. If you have small children aboard, you should be seated where you can get off the plane sooner, too, and not have to pay extra. Unless, of course, you enjoy a baby’s screams. Hey, actually, maybe they should seat all families flying with children WAY IN THE BACK so that when the babies start screaming while deplaning everyone will hurry up. You’ll get everyone off the plane in record time. That’s one way to stay on schedule. And seat pregnant women in the back by the windows. That way they’ll all pee their pants and after a while it’ll smell a bit funky (on longer flights). That’ll get everyone to deplane faster. Instead of charging $5, why don’t they just take away the almost nonexistent leg room and shove a few more seats onto every plane??

I would rather NOT pay extra for the seat…but when we travel we all sit together in a row…window, middle, eisle…so I guess we get to pay $10 extra if all the airlines pick up on this.

Whoa, wait a minute… we normally fly Southwest where they don’t assign seats, so maybe we’ll be spared.

    Crazy.

As a family of 5, that’s at least 3 aisle/window seats, isn’t it? And since FAA regulations state that my child’s car seat must be a window seat, I don’t even get a choice in the matter, do I? Well, I guess I could check the car seat and let my child bounce around in an ill-fitting seatbelt. Hmm. Or not fly.

Honestly. I feel for you poor flight attendants.

  11. 11

No, I wouldn’t pay for a few (unless the view was spectacular, I guess). I’d rather have the aisle seat;)

I think that it’s ridiculous that the passengers keep having to pay for every little thing on an airplane. It’s dumb to have to pay $5 extra to get a certain seat and it’s not gonna stop there either. I’m sure the airlines will come up with something else to charge passengers for. It would make alot more sense to just up airfare than to start nickeling and diming people….yes, it would suck to have higher airfare, but the airlines look like idiots when they start charging a couple bucks here and there for things that should obviously be included!

With that said…I most likely would pay the $5 for a window seat because I hate people climbing over me all the time to get to the bathroom!

I guess it would depend on how long the flight is. If it’s a short flight, no way! If it’s a long flight, like across the country or international or something, then I’d probably pay for the window seat. But only because I like to sleep on long flights and resting my head between the seat back and the window keeps my head from rolling around!

Hmmm… I like to pinch my pennies, but really, I don’t fly very often. So far – twice in my entire life. Hopping to add flight #3 this fall… so, yes. I probably would, just because I don’t get to fly that often and I LOVE to watch…

    Bertie says:

That stinks! When you travel with kids- you have to have them right next to you- and so , I have to pay for the extra seating, which bites. But- if I was going to be just traveling alone, I would be fine with a middle seat. Or does it matter? Can I spread my kids out- and we all be on middle row seats? Would other customers care- if my 3 year old was sitting right behind me, because I didn’t want to have to pay 5 bucks extra?

Yes, what will they think of next?

it just seems like that’s stupid because if you’re traveling in groups, unless you don’t sit together, you really don’t have much of a choice in the matter it seems.

Ick. This is just frustrating and makes me want to avoid flying. My husband and I of course would want to sit together on a flight, and now we have to pay extra if it ends up being a certain seat? Plus, not everyone is comfortable in a ‘middle’ seat, for various reasons. I suppose one could argue then someone is paying for comfort, however what if someone has a physical disability that they need an aisle seat?

I would definitely pay the $5 for an aisle seat! I am YOUR worst traveling nightmare! I can NOT stay seated for any length of time! I flew almost the entire way from BWI to COS standing either in the aisle, near the BR (pretending to be waiting), or finally, thanks to THE SWEETEST air hostess EVER, standing in a little cove near the kitchen, but out of the way. And THAT was after I had taken a muscle relaxer and a relaxation pill. I just CAN’T DO it!!! And that is why I hate to fly…. *sigh* … but I LOVE to travel!

    Krista says:

That’s just ridiculous. There are how many window and aisle seats on the plane? More than middles if I remember right! Why don’t they just put it out there and raise all tickets by $5. It would probably save them a lot of grouching anyways!
Besides, we just flew from Seattle to Vegas with a connection in San Francisco on Virgin America. I wanted to ask for a bulkhead since my hubby is 6’5″ and needs the extra space. They were going to charge us $15 per seat, per flight. That makes an extra $120 roundtrip. Totally not fair. However I can see it in this case since bulkheads are nice. But for the aisle and window, lame! Like others have said, basically that means if you’re more than one person someone’s going to have to pay the extra price if you want to sit together.

Man, that is cheap. I can’t believe they’re going to do that. As if it doesn’t cost enough to fly as it is! That said, if I had to, I would pay the extra for a window seat, and I know my husband would pay extra for the aisle (he’s a big guy and needs a place to put his long limbs).

no, i would not pay extra for a window seat. i think it’s beyond ridiculous that airlines have stooped to charging extra for a seat on the plane. what if all that’s left are window seats? what makes their cost to sit someone at the window more expensive than someone in an aisle seat? ugh, where will this madness stop?

It does seem like we are paying more and more for every little thing, and ammenities are being cut back. But if I had to choose, I probably would pay the extra not to have to sit in between two strangers… I feel horribly for airline employees who are just doing their job, yet they have to deal with the frustrations caused by the CEO’s and “rule makers”.

You know, I read another article that said we could pay up to $30. I wouldn’t pay any amount. I understand the marketing concept, of not charging more for the amount of a ticket, but it just sounds rediculous to pay for a window seat. Just doesn’t sound fair. I’d rather pay more for a rise in ticket price than know I’m paying more for a window seat. If that makes sense.

My hubby would definitely pay the extra money. I know airlines are struggling, but I always wonder in situations like this if they would give more back instead of taking away or charging extra if they wouldn’t make more money with extra passengers. We are driving 11 hours to Illinois in a few weeks mainly because I don’t want to fool with the hassles that Daniel does just about every time he flies.

I don’t know… sigh. I do know that things need to be changed. Big people need bigger seats. Yes — $5 extra or more for that.

I remember flying back to Baltimore once — and the flight was packed. There were three huge – I mean huge- people. My first thought was. I’m going to rebook if I have to squeeze in by one of them.

Then when I got on — those three were seated side by side. It was like solid flesh – I dont’ think they could even move.

Do you think the ones at the kiosk in the gate did that on purpose?

  39. 39

I might. As it is, with a family of five I’m finding that even with gas prices the way they are, driving is our best traveling option. . . oh well.

You know what i would like to know is if everybody seated on a window seat on that plane has paid for the window seat. Chances are that you will only be asked to pay if another person want a window seat too. Thank goodness such things haven’t reached Africa yet or at least kenya.
