Morning Sickness

If you haven’t already heard, I’m pregnant . . . again.

This came as a complete shock and was definitely the last thing that I ever expected. In fact, I haven’t had a period since the miscarriage but never in my wildest dreams thought this was the result. I swear I should be the poster girl for preventing teenage pregnancy because I am living proof that “all it takes is one time”.

So now I”m in my 8th week and the morning sickness is starting to hit. With both my daughters, the nausea was so bad that I couldn’t even function without my Zolfran (chemo medication). Back then, there were no generic brands so I had to pay $20 per pill and take them 1 every 8 hours! Yikes!

It’s not as bad this time around s0 I’m going to try and stay away from the medication. I find that if I usually eat something small or take a nap, then the morning sickness will subside. However, I’m looking for other suggestions.

What helped you with your morning sickness?

First of all, congrats again on the pregnancy!! I’m very happy for you!

I’ve never had a baby (so wish that I have!), so I don’t have any advice for the morning sickness. I do deal with a lot of nausea though due to my 12 medications I have to take on a daily basis due to my chronic pain conditions. What I typically do is try to go back to sleep for a little bit, and usually when I wake up I feel better.

Hope the morning sickness passes sooner rather than later. Hang in there, and congrats again!

    Congratulations on your wonderful news!

I, too, had terrible morning sickness until about week 14 with both kids. I found that leaving crackers on my bedside table and eating little nibbles right away helped me get by a little better each morning.

    Hang in there…

Bless your heart! I have absolutely no suggestions since mine was so bad I was also put on Zolfran…that stuff is magicical…no wonder it is so expensive! My insurance would only cover a certain amount of pills a month ( 13 pills! ) So I hoarded them like golden nuggets and only used them on days that I wanted to go out with my husband and not have to carry along a barf bag!

Good luck and congratulations!…I hope this pregnancy treats you a little bit better :)

Sorry, nothing worked for me. I couldn’t even keep water down on my own. I was on Zolfran too as long as insurance would cover it, then they switched me to something else that I had to split the pills and take a half of one every 3 hours around the clock. Just wanted to offer my morning sickness condolences. The smell of chlorine water still makes me gag after having my head in the toilet for 2 pregnancies.

I just wanted to add, I’ve heard some women swear by Vitamin Water or Preggy Pops.

The only thing that helped me was time, and avoiding anything that made me queasy, which with my second pregnancy was almost all food!! good luck!!!

Congratulations Kailani! Sorry to hear about the morning sickness, I never had any with either of the boys so i can’t offer any useful info. I hope all goes well.

    Congratulations!

My morning sickness was so bad with my DD I lost weight. What worked for me was sleep. Strangely mine got worse around dinner-time and so I while everyone else ate dinner, I just went to bed. The few times I tried to eat dinner, it ended up coming back up so….

I also found that gum helped a little bit.

I am sooo sorry you’re feeling yuck! I never had morning sickness with my first or this baby so I can’t help you there. I hope its not as bad for you with this one and you dont have to take those meds! THAT’D get expensive!

Also, if there is anything I can do to help out with anything…this or FRN let me know. I dont know how I can help…but anything to give you some relief!

Nothing helped but the Zofran. And I was only authorized a few pills a month, so mostly I was just laying on the couch puking my lungs up.
Though I did always feel better when I was hospitalized and on a constant IV drip. I think if my DR, would just let me have one at home I would do much better.

    Congrats on the pregnancy!!
Morning sickness….well, I suffered my share of it (almost the whole 9 months I was pregnant with my daughter) I soaked saltines in milk the combo almost always settled my stomach!
Stay AWAY from peanut butter….I cannot eat it still to this day as a result of how sick it made me!!

Enjoy every minute of your pregnancy!!

I have had morning sickness in various degrees in my 8 different pregnancies, but never just in the morning. So aside from trying to keep something in my stomach as much as possible (even if just crackers) I sucked on peppermints or other hard candies and chewed gum. With my last few (including this one I was 24 weeks) when I get that look that I might throw up my kids yell get the mints. LOL

  17. 17

Girl… I have been away for a bit with my dad in hospital but I didn’t know you were pregnant. Congratulations. That is awesome. You will have to definitely keep us posted.

Salty things like saltine crackers and sprite or ginger ale always seemed to help me.

(((HUGS))) hope it will not be as bad this time.

I never understood why they called it “morning” sickness – I was sick all the time. I took zofran with all my pregnancies – i always lost a ton of weight the first trimester. Someone recommended ginger but it never worked for me. Hope you feel better soon!

  19. 19

Oh my! I remember eating crackers in milk like a cereal and that helped. I hope this phase is over soon.

Thanks for the comment on the generous wife tip. Did you get to do it?

    Mama Bub says:

The only thing that helped me, other than eating small bit of things constantly, was peppermint candy. I had a huge stash in my classroom to keep me from vomiting on the overhead projector.

The only thing that worked for me was telling myself it will be all worth it in the end. I didn’t take any meds, but I tried eating crackers, chewing gum, ginger, etc.

It’ll all be worth it in the end =)

Those cardboardy ginger senbei are usually pretty good, and so is lemon peel and candied ginger. I am all about the crackseed during early pregnancy. Third trimester, it just makes my ankles swell…

Wonderful !!! CONGRATULATIONS ! that I call good news.
Less nice is that you suffer these morning sickness and I really don’t know what you should do in this case. When I was pregnant I didn’t have anything, I even felt better then usual !

  26. 26

For me, I just have to make sure my stomach as never completely empty. I can usually sip some gatorade and eat about 3 saltines – just a tiny snack, and it helps with my vomiting. :)

    Sues2u2 says:

My morning sickness wasn’t that bad although I was on Zolfran while waiting for my hernia operation. Awesome stuff!

This might sound really odd but I used to east smarties. Can’t stand them & don’t remember how I found out that they worked but they did. I wish you the best.

    Oh & CONGRATS!!!!!!

    Mandee says:

There were only three things that helped my stomach when I was pregnant…. vanilla milkshakes, salad or ginger tea (ginger is wonderful on upset stomachs!) I couldn’t do the cracker thing. Here’s to hoping you do not get too sick! Congratulations again!

i’m sorry i have no useful tip regarding morning sickness. i had it so bad w my girls that just the word ‘food’ made me nauseous. i lost weight instead of gained it in the 1st 4 mos of pregnancy :-/ i hope it will subside for you soon. xx

  30. 30

Congratulations to you! I’m still a mom to be. What I did with my morning sickness was to sleep and when I wake up I feel better.
I hope you’ll be fine soon.

zolfran is the BEST. I didn’t realize they had generic versions now. Seriously, that is one of the BEST medicines ever invented. Ever.

Keep eating….. As sick as I felt on a pretty consistent basis, just keep nibbling… saltines, goldfish crackers, etc…. that really helped me. I hope the nausea goes away soon. :-)

  33. 33
    Hillary says:

Definitely saltines. Ginger tea helped me a lot, too. So did sucking on something, like lollipops, or lemon drops. And chewing gum. Chewing gum kept lots of nausea at bay, for me.

Oh yay, honey! Mazel Tov on such wonderful news! I hope you feel better soon.

    Natasha says:

The dreaded morning sickness (that rarely only comes in the morning), so sorry to hear it got you!! I was sick for almost my whole pregnancy, and although nothing really helped, I found sucking on a lemon sometimes did the trick. Of course, it may have just been distracting me!

  36. 36
    Melissa says:

Just keeping something in my stomach as much as possible seemed to help. I don’t think I got as sick as you though… hopefully it won’t last long! Hugs!!

    AmyG says:

With my 2nd child, I never really had morning sickness, thank God for that! But with my first daughter, holy cow, it was every day, all day, all 9 months. *sigh*

I only actually lost everything twice, but the nausea was horrible and I came close more times than I care to think about.

What I did was kept bottled water on hand with lemon juice squeezed in it. Sometimes I chopped up a peppermint to put in it, but mostly just water & lemon. And this is going to sound funny, but if I was in the bathroom, brushing my teeth, or something & thought I might get sick, I would sniff mouthwash… or should say smell it. Just the scent of it, helped calm the nausea.

I hope your morning sickness passes quickly!

  38. 38

WOW! Well, first of all, CONGRATS!

With Morning sickness, it helped when I chewed peppermint gum. Also, anything with ginger in it. I think they make ginger lozenges, or you can get some essential oils.

    I’ll be praying for you!

  39. 39

this sounds weird but the only thing that really settled my stomach when feeling nauseous was fresh vegetables. it’s the only thing i craved and my stomach felt so much more settled after eating them.

    katy says:

Congrats! Something sour worked for me.

  41. 41

Um, should I tell you that I never had morning sickness? Okay, I know you hate me. *grin*

  42. 42
    Erin says:

ugh I had morning sickness 24/7! What really helped me was ginger snaps! I had a craving for them one morning, bought them, and sure enough they made me feel so much better. every morning when I woke up before i even sat up i slowly ate some ginger snaps and sipped some water or ginger ale. Any time I got alittle woozy I would lay down right away and eat some more. They say the majority of your morning sickness is caused by getting hungry and that the skinner you are, the more likely you are to get it. So eat! And maybe it will help! :)

  43. 43

Congrats! I had horrible “morning” sickness with all 4 pregnancies! I had to use phenergan but also found eating small things throughout the day helped. Starting out with saltine crackers at the bedside before getting up seemed to help out a bit also!

Good luck and remember, this too shall pass!

  44. 44

I found that a lot of my morning sickness (never actually got sick, just felt like I would most of the day) was thanks to the prenatal vitamins. No matter what brand and kind we tried they did not work. I opted to do regular vitamins with a folic acid and calcium supplement. I also bought the sea bands to try. Some days they would help and others they wouldn’t. Hope you get some relief soon.

    Summer says:

Poor you! The first few weeks are just the worst. I certainly hope you don’t have to end up taking zolfran again. That would mean you were pretty darn sick.
I never found anything that helped with my morning sickness. If you find something that really works let us know!

Congratulations on your pregnancy. So sorry to hear that the green-eyed nausea monster is visiting, though. Ugh!

The March of Dimes has several suggestions on our website for tackling the nausea issue. Take a look: http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/159_16045.asp

    Hope you feel better soon!

    Shannon says:

Ginger, anything with ginger should help!

  49. 49

Fresh air usually helped… I did end up throwing up in the garden once though! :-)

Congratulations!!!! That is awesome!!! Unfortunately I do not have much advise to give since I did not suffer from morning sickness w/my daughter. The few times I got a little nauseous I ate some crackers and felt fine. (Even though the last thing I felt like doing was eating anything.) Good luck!!!!
