Lake Tahoe vs. Big Bear Mountain

June 19, 2007

If you ask me about the sun, surf, or beach houses, I could give you a pretty decent list of recommendations.

Ask me about snow and I don’t know where to start. I’ve only really been in the snow once and that was when Girlie Girl was 2 years old. Even then, she was feeling sick for most of the time so we pretty much just stayed in the cafeteria.

Now we’re planning a snow trip in mid-March 2008 and I need your help.

Where would you recommend that we go and stay? We would prefer to be somewhere on the west coast and it would have to be a kid-friendly place since there will be 4 young children with us (ages 18 months to 9 years old). Of course, we would like condo-type accommodation with kitchen and fireplace.

I’ve tried to do some Internet research on it but it was becoming too overwhelming! I didn’t even know Lake Tahoe was in Nevada and California.

So, what do you recommend? Are there any places that we should definitely stay away from? Could someone please point me in the right direction?

If you are looking for snow, I know an awful lot about Colorado. :D There are tons of rentals up in different towns with ski resorts. Let me know if you are interested and I will see if I can dig up some info for you.

We can do a house swap next March. That time of year we are trying to get away from the snow.

I can tell you about Montana. We have lots of good spring skiing around here. But we aren’t really on the west cost. :)

don’t know myself…but I’ll ask DH as he’s been there.
We get plenty of the white cr@p here that I don’t normally need to go in search of it…unless my mom is here. ha ha then we have to drive up to Loveland ski area for her to see some and as soon as she leaves it snows.

I’ve never been to Tahoe and we went to Big Bear after the snow was gone. Have you looked into anything in Utah? Park City is where a lot of my family and friends went when I was a kid. They held some of the Winter Olympic events there in 2002 - lots of things to do and there’s some great shopping too. I know you are overwhelmed with info… but here is a website to check out if you get a chance… http://www.parkcityinfo.com/index.asp Jackson Hole, Wyoming is also a great place to go for snow. Good luck!

congratulations on the photo contest!

I don’t know anything about vacations, I’m a vacation loser, but thanks for asking, because I’m learning from the answers!

I know nothing of Big Bear, but I love Lake Tahoe. Of course, my experience is pre-children days, so perhaps I’m not a good gauge. We stayed on the California side, and the weather, food, and environment were all gorgeous and perfect.

I don’t know if you’ve ever skied, but I know the skiing up at Tahoe is excellent.

My husband went to Park City years ago and had a great time, some of the best skiing he’s ever done. Are you guys thinking of a ski vacation, or just hanging around the snow.

I’m not sure how far you are to Whistler, BC; it’s about a 90 minute drive from Vancouver. We’re actually heading there for our family vacation in a couple of weeks, but their best season is winter. Awesome skiing, very family friendly, and your US dollar could make it quite affordable.

I know what you mean about internet research for vacations. I’m a total nut and will stay up all night researching all the ins and outs. I’m obsessed!

I would recommend CO. I think it’s beautiful and not as touristy as Lake Tahoe. I enjoyed Lake Tahoe but honestly LOVE CO more! Just giving my two cents :)

I hear CO is the place to go. Tahoe is nice but not sure about how kid friendly it would be.

I lived near Big Bear, but you know, I never been there. crazy.

I would recommend Tahoe over Big Bear all day long. Big Bear is extremely crowded with the LA set all winter long. There is really not alot to do there except ski, and I find that the skiing/snow conditions can be marginal at best. I would highly recommend Tahoe. The South shore side has more night life and the north shore side is a bit more quiet. There is great sledding in the area, and honestly, the setting could not be better. Enjoy your trip.
