Aloha Friday #33

May 23, 2008

Welcome to this week’s edition of Aloha Friday.

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day that we take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lenghty response.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link below. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

Today’s question is:

How do you feel about American Airlines’ new policy for charging passengers $15 for their first checked bag?

I think it’s an outrage. All this means is that passengers will now bring on more and bigger carry-on bags when boarding. There is currently a two bag limit per passenger but I have still yet to see anyone enforce it. So, if you’re traveling this Summer, make sure you board as soon as possible to ensure an overhead storage space!

Comment Spotlight from Jenn of Inner Ramblings: Just charge us more for the ticket, for crying out loud. We know gas is sky-high (ohh, sorry for the pun!) I think the majority of people know they’d have to pay more for a ticket. I dislike it when people find “cute? ways to recover the money they’re losing- just charge it straight up!

It’s ridiculous. I understand that fuel prices have gone up. So just make the tickets more rather than nickel and dime-ing us to death! I think people realize that it costs more when gas is so expensive, but they’re just going to have pissed off travelers when they get to the ticket counter and have to pay extra for every little thing.
We flew Virgin America for spring break and they had a $10 or $15 fee for a 2nd checked bag. That I could handle as I’m trying to learn to pack light… we did fine with one checked bag each (and not even one for the baby since he didn’t have his own seat). I guess I’m glad I bought the XL suitcase so I can just check one… now I’m wishing I’d bought the slightly larger carry-on, but I was playing it safe and hoping not to get caught by size requirements.
I guess I’m just glad we don’t fly often.

I think it’s crazy! From what I hear, American has a rather small size for what they allow for carry-ons. DH says he sure doesn’t envy the ticket agents who have to tell these passengers that they owe $15 each way for their bags.

Seems like they’re shooting themselves in the foot though… now most folks will fly someone else.

American Airlines is already on my hit list for personal reasons. I feel the baggage charge is a ploy to get sympathy because of fuel costs as the airline enters contract negotiations with the pilots, flight attendants and baggage handlers. What most of the public is unaware of is the millions of dollars the CEO his colleagues just took in bonus pay. And I mean MILLIONS.
The one time I had a ticket agent enforce the two bag rule was when I was flying our cat across country. I was the last to board and they would give me but several seconds. I had to dump my purse inside the pet carrier with Bayley in it. When I took my seat in first class and the lady next to me went ballistic because she didn’t like cats. I was lucky there was another FC seat available because it was a 6 hour flight.

I’m left conflicted. My kneejerk reaction is to complain about nickle and dime-ing us to death. But then again, *in theory*, this is in lieu of an increase in ticket prices, so *in theory* we’re only charging people extra who but an “extra” burden on AA…. That’s the key though, in theory. In practice, I’m sure prices will continue to climb and we’re just being nickle and dimed.

I’ve been paying $10 each way on Spirit for almost a year now. BUT I pay about $16 RT per ticket and sometimes less. So I have not had issues about paying it unlike others who pay the same tariff yet still complain. ;)

Now, if I were paying $300 plus per ticket, and they charge me per bag, then I would not be happy at all!

Ack! No horror stories about AA please! We’re scheduled to fly AA in mid-June to Washington D.C.

I understand the need to charge; I’m sure fuel is insane for them right now. And I understand their need to discourage passengers from bringing their U-Haul’s with them when they travel (you know the ones I’m talking about, I’m sure). But I can’t help but wonder if they are shooting themselves in the foot by mixing things up and making people even MORE disgruntled about traveling when in fact, they should be looking for incentives to coax people back into the air.

With gas prices already edging close to $4 (and some areas are already there), people are staying home this summer because it’s just too dad-gum expensive to go anywhere. We’re only flying because we cashed in our frequent flyer miles. But trust me, we won’t be doing this again for several years even if we COULD afford to pay for it.

If you don’t bring bags, this is a good thing, right? Except that they already have prices higher, so what is the point? I always do searches for my flights, and I can tell you, they are NEVER the lowest flight. Why would I use them if they add prices to their already higher prices? Not a chance.

But that said, I don’t use them anyway. It is ridiculous enough that airlines are starting to charge for a second bag. If it is a weight/gas thing, then charge by weight. If someone has two bags and they fit in the weight guidlines, great! If they have one bag that is too heavy, charge them.

I haven’t flown much, especially recently. But I do think that it makes it harder on people, especially families, to have to pay for a service which has always been free. Airline tickets are expensive enough already. On the other hand - I know that fuel prices have got to be hurting the airlines, so I know they have to pass the costs along somehow. It’s such a difficult time right now. :(

Okay…so I’m sorry…but are you freaking kidding??? I’m looking for flights home for the summer holiday and what most companies are charging there is NO WAY they can justify charging for the first checked bag.
For international flights, I’m going to be paying almost $400 PER TICKET for the fuel charge!!! aaaarrrggggghhhh!! (i’m expecting to have to pay around $6,000 just for 3 tickets home!!! Am also looking at selling body parts to help cover the cost!! :-D )
Pretty soon, no one will be able to afford to fly…

That is so unreal and unfair. Two things, one the overhead compartments are allready overcrowded, so now people are going to pack more lightly and not check in a bag. It also seems like the airlines are penalizing the travelers who need to check in luggage to save fuel cost to keep the plane lighter. That’s so unfair to the family who say might be going to Disneyland for a week. If everyone checks a bag, that’s $15*4= $60 more dollars. For me that’s so hard to justify.

Charging extra for checked luggage is ridiculous. If they need to pay for the rise in gas prices than they need to raise the price of the ticket not expect us to have to pull out cash at every airline check-in (can you imagine how much longer it will take to get through the line??)

It’s expected that the price of an airline ticket includes certain amenities and that INCLUDES a checked bag.

Really bad PR move on the part of AA. It would have been better just to bump ticket prices by $15. This is only going to piss off the flying public, who already feels nickel-and-dimed to death. And like you said, everyone who has a chance is going to try to cram a week’s worth of clothes into the overhead bin.

I had a strange perspective on this. If they just raised the cost of the ticket it would be less upsetting to the public because few actually try to bargain hunt a ticket. And if they did they would then have the consumer power (this takes away that power of the consumer) Where as if they are put in the position of having to pay for something (like luggage) that has always been free. Feathers get very ruffled. Perhaps some guy thought it would be more fair to those who business travel Or who do not take luggage. It gave them a black eye though because we have expectation of free luggage. Family flight would become cost prohibitive. The argument of tempers at the airport when folks are stressed out already would raise security needs.

I agree with most of the comments… it is understandable that gas prices for the airlines have risen 91% in the last year but to not allow your own patrons to have at least 1 checked luggage bad is ridiculous. I would much rather seen the weight limit on bags decrease and then if bags went over this then a cost would be assessed… not this mandatory fee when the cost of tickets alone have been rising as well…
