The Open Road, starring Jeff Bridges and Justin Timberlake is now available on DVD and BluRay. Also starring in the film are Mary Steenburgen, Kate Mara, and Harry Dean Stanton. This movie was written and directed by Michael Meredith and is rated PG-13.

With his mom hospitalized and facing major surgery, Carlton (Justin Timberlake) finds himself flying to Ohio to track down his estranged father, Kyle (Jeff Bridges). Kyle is a baseball legend who has not always been the most dependable father figure; he is obnoxious and drinks too much. He’s currently traveling the country making the rounds appearing at baseball conventions. Carlton’s ex-girlfriend, Lucy, goes along for moral support. Once Carlton finds Kyle and convinces him to come back to Texas, the three embark on a somewhat uncomfortable and awkward road trip. Along the way, Carlton and Kyle begin to face their past mistakes and work to rebuild their relationship. At the same time, Carlton is also trying to figure out where things stand with Lucy, who he is still in love with.

I thought this was a sweet, heartwarming movie. Both Bridges and Timberlake did nice jobs and were believable as estranged father and son. I couldn’t help but root for everyone to work things out and get back on good terms. I was especially pleased that, while rated PG-13, it was a fairly mild film in regards to language and subject matter. I could watch this movie with my teen kids without any problems.
