When I hear the name Nicholas Sparks I automatically think of romance . . . all consuming, can’t live without each other . . . romance. I mean what woman didn’t see The Notebook and cried her eyes out? So when I had the opportunity to attend an advance screening of Safe Haven, I was really looking forward to it.

An affirming and suspenseful story about a young woman’s struggle to love again, Safe Haven is based on the novel from Nicholas Sparks, the best-selling author behind the hit films The Notebook and Dear John. When a mysterious young woman arrives in a small North Carolina town, her reluctance to join the tight knit community raises questions about her past. Slowly, she begins putting down roots, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex, a widowed store owner with two young children. But dark secrets intrude on her new life with such terror that she is forced to rediscover the meaning of sacrifice and rely on the power of love in this deeply moving romantic thriller.

Starring Josh Duhamel, Julianne Hough, David Lyons, Cobie Smulders

I have to admit that I didn’t find Safe Haven to be as emotionally moving as The Notebook but it was in great movie in it’s own right. For me, it hit a little too close to home and I was able to identify with the female character even though I was fortunate enough to not have had to go to the same extreme. But through the story you could feel the struggles and courage she had to endure in order to survive. And in the end, she was willing to leave the happy new life that she found in order to keep others safe. Now that’s true love.

However, what I really liked was that just when I thought the story was getting predictable, a shocking twist got thrown in to keep me guessing. The ending of the movie is definitely something I didn’t expect and kept me thinking for the rest of the evening.

Safe Haven is definitely a love story but it’s also something more. It’s a movie about courage and a will to survive. Something that every woman should embrace.
