Seuss around with some Dr. Seuss Apps

Who isn’t a Dr. Suess fan? I think his books are going on their third generation of readers. And since we’re in such an electronic generation, of course Dr. Suess can effortlessly make the leap to handheld devices like the iPhone. These apps from OceanHouse Media certainly indicate that the Suess way of life is still going strong.
I am always waiting. And kids don’t wait well. Nor do I. So the eb00k apps of “1 Fish, 2 Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish” and “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” are a great way to pass some time. Each ebook has a three ways of reading it: the book can be read aloud by the program as it highlights the words – the user also has the option of touching the drawings to see a description pop up; the book can be read by the user as a regular ebook; the book can read itself and highlight words as well as turn the pages.
These apps definitely held my kids’ interest. They both sat next to me without beating the snot out of each other (which is generally what happens). The reading voice is loud and clear – no struggling to hear what is being said, even over the perfectly-themed background music. These books are exactly the same as they are in print, but better, offering a bit of interaction and different ways of reading for different ages.
Another plus to the release of the “1 Fish, 2 Fish” app was released to help celebrate World Ocean Day with the Ocean Project on June 8th. I think in light of what is going on in the Gulf of Mexico, this ebook can really help highlight that ocean life is precious and we need to help take care of it.
The third app I was privileged to try out was Up with a Fish! This is a Dr. Suess-themed stacking game where the object is to catch all sorts of objects (teapots, chairs, umbrellas, etc.), particularly fishbowls, and avoid Thing #1 and Thing #2. This a fun, easy game where all you have to do is tilt the iPhone to play. I quickly became obsessed with this game and kept trying to beat my best score.
All three apps are well worth what you will spend on them – $3.99 for each of the ebooks and only 99 cents for the Up with a Fish! All of the apps are compatible with iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Instead of wasting money on all of those “educational” apps, spend the money on these apps and now that your children are learning just like you did – from the fabulous Dr. Suess.
I received promo codes in order to review these apps at no cost. This did not influence my review at all. All opinions are 100% my own.

Tethered Mommy is a blog about being tethered, or obsessed. I am constantly on my laptop and/or iPhone or reading. I enjoy possibly "tethering" my readers to the cool things I find. |
