With The Lorax due out in theaters next month my girls have been going crazy for anything dealing with this adorable furry creature. So I thought they should start by finding out how The Lorax craze started back in 1971 thanks to our friend, Dr. Seuss.
This is a story of greed as a single character called a Once-ler finds himself in a beautiful forest filled with Truffla trees. He learns that he can use these trees to knit Thneeds – an odd but versatile garment that people are willing to pay big money for. The Once-ler is overcome with greed and he chops down more and more Truffla trees and even brings in members of his family to help with the production. One thing leads to another and eventually a factory is built, the skies turn black, the trees and surrounding greens disappear, and all the creatures are forced to leave their homes.
Throughout the story the self-proclaimed speaker of the trees – The Lorax – tries to get the Once-ler to stop production and think about what he’s doing to the environment. However, the Once-ler continues with his Thneed business until the very last Truffla tree is gone leaving him alone with nothing to produce.
In the end, the Once-ler finds that he has one Truffla seed left in his production and gives it to a little boy so he can start a new Truffla forest in hopes that The Lorax and all of his animal friends will return.
This is a great movie for kids to learn the importance of preserving our environment and wildlife for future generations. It talks about how greed can overshadow principles and that we all need to take a step back and look at how our actions affect the world around us. And it does it in a way that only Dr. Seuss can do. We loved the magical make-believe world of Truffla trees, Bar-ba-loots, and Swomee-Swans. We liked the rhyming dialog. And we definitely enjoyed the fun songs!
The Lorax is a great addition to our family DVD library and I know we’ll be watching it many more times to come.
