Dog & Butterfly – A Children’s Story

If you were around in the 70’s you might remember the group Heart who recorded a hit song by the name Dog & Butterfly. The sisters, Ann and Nancy Wilson, have now created a children’s storybook from the song. It’s also called Dog & Butterfly, but it doesn’t follow the exact lyrics of the song (included at the back of the book).
This is a whimsical story about a young puppy who discovers the secret to catching a butterfly and making friends with it. The illustrations are watercolors done by Nancy and are absolutely adorable. On her reasons for writing the story Ann says,
“I wanted to create a story for the very little ones that conveyed the message of the song about the miracle that happens one sunny day to a tenacious little puppy who refuses to give up and catches his dream,” said Ann Wilson. “It’s my hope that, read aloud, it will be a fun and happy experience for readers and children, teaching the gentle lessons of patience and optimism. We tried to give the illustrations lots of character and color, so that Dog & Butterfly becomes a permanent addition to the ‘story-before-bed’ shelf!”
While the words to the story don’t flow as smoothly as I would expect, my son absolutely loves this book and the pictures totally capture his imagination. Who wouldn’t love a smiling sunshine that looks like it’s singing and bright colorful butterflies on every page! I like that it encourages children to keep trying to reach their goals.
If you have a small child that likes animals I would recommend Dog & Butterfly! For those who choose to buy the book a new version of the song has also been released and is available for download only with the book’s purchase.
Happy reading!
