In his youth, Bill Kelly was interested in animal nutrition. Feeding Champions shares the story of how Bill and his brother Jack developed the first patented dog food, meat-based formula, giving a more nutritious alternative to grain or gluten-meal based dog food. This experience came from his youth, when the family fed and bred silver foxes.
Following World War II, Bill used his knowledge of animal nutrition and passion for dogs to develop the unique formula and began selling it out of his kitchen. Feeding Champions gives an account of how the Bil-Jac brand grew over the next sixty years; primarily through word of
mouth, to become the beloved dog food of families and breeders nationwide.

My Take on the Book
While I have never owned dogs myself, I have to say that I and my girls are closet dog lovers (well, not really closeted). When I was given the opportunity to read this book, I was interested to hear the perspective of a man who is so committed to the betterment of all dogs.
This book had wonderful images throughout the book, and completely chronicles Bill Kelly’s life and passion for breeding and making dog food. As a dog newbie (per se) I have to say that I learned so much in reading this book (even though it is relatively short – 89 pages).
The book not only looks at the past but also examines the present and even the future and you can tell that Bill Kelly’s legacy continues today and the company is definitely not going anywhere!
If you are a dog lover or if you have a true interest in learning new things about dogs and the dog food industry, you should definitely check out this book!
