What is your grocery shopping indulgence?

June 29, 2008

I saw this question over at Cafe Mom and since I just got home from grocery shopping, I thought it would be an interesting topic.

What indulgence always makes your grocery shopping list?

When I head for the market, I usually make a list of things we need and hope I can find most of it on sale. If it’s a necessity like rice, milk, bread, etc., I’ll usually get it no matter what. Other things like certain fruits, cereals, meats, and snacks can usually wait until I find a good deal.

However, the one thing I always buy no matter how much it costs is Lays Potato Chips. I don’t know what it is I love about it but I won’t buy any other brand. And it can’t be any of the flavored ones like BBQ, Sour Cream & Onion, or Salt & Vinegar. It has to be the Original Lays in the yellow package.

So, what is your grocery shopping indulgence?

BTW, this is not a paid advertisement. I just really love Lays Chips. :-)

Comment Spotlight from Nik @ Prose & Converse:

I can’t make it through the store without a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Cinnamon Buns ice cream! I usually only have a few bites of it (and the magical little gnomes eat the rest when I’m not paying attention- that’s the only explaination, because the rest of the family denies it). It’s so delish!

That’s an awesome question. We, actually, have quite a few indulgences, but the biggest (expense-wise) would probably be Chapman’s Ice Cream Bars.

Mine is Potato Chips also, but UTZ, and it has to be the Utz Wavy. For some reason, it seems to taste better. Such a downfall! The only thing that stops me from buying it is if the store does not have it! If you saw how tiny our IGA is, you would know that they don’t alsways have it. Great Q!

I have a sweet tooth, in fact, it’s safe to say my whole mouth is one big sugar cave. But, the older I get, the more I can’t seem to handle chocolate, straight chocolate, that is.

I’ve been on a 3 Musketeers kick and MUST grab a six-pack of bars every time I go shopping (which is once a week). And then I have to limit myself to only eating one a day.

I know! It’s a sickness. :)

If I do the shopping then it’s potato chips, I too have a favourite brand *Amica*, if my husband does the shopping then it’s ice cream.

I don’t have just one! I usually sneak some yummy snack into the cart each week. My favorites are Guacamole corn chips and the spicy Doritoes.

However, my recent trip to the bathroom scale (I’ve been avoiding it) shows that I need to stop this nasty little habbit!

I would say Kashi Strawberry Fields cereal. Sooooooo tasty! If it’s not on sale at the grocery store, I sometimes add a trip to Wal Mart in with my grocery shopping errands so that I can pick it up (I’s way cheaper at Wal Mart)!

Even if I’m scraping by that week, I always by good coffee. I’m one of the lucky dieters who drinks her coffee black: no doctoring required. And love every eye-opening drop of it. So I splurge on the good stuff even if we’re eating rice and beans all week… Wonder if my kids will ever get a clue, that they could have a real dinner if I’d just by Always Save coffee? Shhh!

Kailani, love those chips, too. But, let me think. I always have to buy Fuji apples, no matter the price. But that’s not so much an indulgence as a necessity, as it’s about the only apple the kids will eat, and they each have at least one a day.

But for me, a true indulgence…I’m not tied to a certain brand, but two drinks I simply can’t buy cheap are red wine and coffee beans. Must have good stuff.

I don’t know if it would be considered an “indulgence” but I MUST have my Diet Dr. Pepper no matter what the cost. I drink like 5 of these cans a day so it runs out fast. Yea, I know, its bad for me, but hey, at least they are zero calories. And I love Lays too - i think it is the SALT in them I crave. Since I am now officially back from vacation, I’m starting Weight Watchers again so I’m afraid the Lays and other indulgences are off the menu for now. UGH. I have to lose the 15 pounds I’ve put on. Sucks!!!

Great question~ I always grab my indulgence right before I’m walking over to the register. I make a slight detour to the dried fruits aisle and get dried/ sweetened mango. Its been a favorite snack of mine since I was little and I haven’t been able to give it up :-)

I don’t know if anyone would call it an indulgence, but the ‘unnecessary’ item I always seem to buy is jalapeño peppers. They really spice things up!

Athenos spicy 3 pepper hummus

If I could just figure out a way to get over those cravings, maybe I could loose weight ;)

It’s gotta be Lays for our family too. I’ve bought store chips before, and they are just not the same.

Mine would have to be Pepperidge Farm Mint Milanos. For the family it’s Fudge Tracks icecream.

We always have to have Dove chocolate in the house, my husband loves it. I tend to get on munchies for studying kicks–Mike-n-Ikes, Twizzlers, Good-n-Plenty, etc…..anything I can have close by while doing school work.

And that Sam’s Trail Mix sounds good. I’ll be checking that out ASAP!
