Visiting Sally Salon’s World

May 3, 2008

Yesterday I had a hair appointment, my first one since December 2007. Yup, can you believe I haven’t cut my hair for the last 6 months? And now I remember why - I was there for 4 1/2 hours. FOUR.AND.A.HALF.HOURS! What parent in the world has 4 1/2 hours to spare? Luckily, my sister offered to watch the girls (thanks sis!) so I knew they were in good hands.

The guy that I go to is THE hair stylist to the flight attendants. If I didn’t absolutely love my hair whenever I walk out of the salon, I would probably find someone else. I think the problem is that he schedules too many clients at one time. Today, for example, there were 4 of us. Even though he had 2 assistants helping him, it was still pretty chaotic and sometimes entertaining to see him try to juggle everyone around.

This totally reminded me of the game Sally’s Salon where you have to manage an endless stream of clients with different needs and temperments. If you take too long, your clients will refuse to tip you or worse yet, walk out - which is what I think the lady in the chair next to me wanted to do.

Anyway, it’s all over and I love the way it turned out. Sorry for not posting a photo but you know how I feel about taking pictures of myself. I don’t mind it if the girls are with me and I’m somewhere in the background. But front and center? I’ll pass. ;-)

So, how long does your trip to the hair salon take? Would you sacrifice your precious time for the perfect haircut?

My last hair cut was about as long ago! I recently got mine cut and its ok. I would definitely NOT sacrifice 4 and a half hours for the perfect cut. That’s way too long for me to wait around. Especially since I just wear my hair long with layers. How hard is it to do that? Apparently very hard since I”ve had a few really bad cuts. loL! I just found an awesome colorist and it takes a little more than 2 hours to have it colored each time. I don’t like sacrificing that much time to have it done, but I do it because there’s nothing like a good colorist!

I just had my roots filled in, and that with the hair cut took just an hour and a half. I do that every three months. I alternate that with getting the fill-in with highlights and a cut, and that takes about two and a half hours. I have an advantage that you don’t, though - my kids are both in school full-time, so this is my perfect “me” time. I’ve been with my stylist for 17 years, and she knows my hair very, very well. In fact, she cuts the entire family’s hair.

I would sacrifice time but not so much money…we are on a budget so I go to one of those economy chains…but more often than not, they do a good job.
My last hair cut was before our trip…over a month ago! Time to get over there again…”walk ins welcome!” ;)

Also, I love the Mother’s Day photo below…and the story behind it. So very sweet! I love my two girls so much too!

The last trip took more out emotionally than time-wise. I got my hair cut - from hip-length to chin-length. And I love it.

when I was going in for color & a cut I could easily be there for 3 to 4 hours…and NO my stylist was working only on me. But she would take the phone calls and talk with potential clients or the other staff. Which is why I stopped going to her. She would be too busy to listen to what I wanted. We would talk and by the time she got back to the mixing room she would have forgotten what I wanted and just bring back what was on my chart from last time.
Once DD asked for no bangs & I wanted bangs…she cut dd’s bangs and left mine alone. grrr!

It makes no sense to me to sacrifice 4 1/2 hours for the perfect cut when my hair grows so fast.

My last haircut was this last March. Before that it was a whole year. It does take roughly 3-4 hours for them to do my hair. But I LOVE it! I feel so wonderful and pampered.

Because I have short hair, I really should go in about every month or so…sometimes I just cut and snip a bit myself until I can get the time to go!!
A few weeks ago, I went in for a “highlighting”…had chemicals for blond hair sent from the States…they were pretty freaked out about all that but…it turned out okay! With the washing and head/neck/shoulders/upperback massage that goes with that…then the highlighting, cut…and styling…it was about 3 1/2 hours!! My butt was numb…but I looked mah-ve-lous!!

My haircut usually takes about 45 minutes…actually if it’s less than that I feel kind of “jipped”, for the money I pay for it. If I get highlights, it takes about 2 hours. I’d much rather spend a little while there every month or so, than go to Great Clips and be done in 15 minutes and walk out with something I hate.

Wow, I thought I was the “norm” as I go to my “colorist” every month to color my roots (he says my hair is the fastest growing he has seen). I book my appointment always in advance and on a work evening so I stop in before going home, so my weekends are free for family stuff. I am there for 90 minutes for just a color and every third month I have a cut too. He’s the best and we live outside of any large city. I enjoy it and don’t want the gray roots to show (yet!)!

That game is a riot… I haven’t played it in awhile… :)
I had a gal that cut my hair on Oregon and I loved her! She took about 45 minutes… which I thought was perfect. The last haircut I got I liked, but they didn’t really do what I wanted. I haven’t found anyone down here that I REALLY like… just lots that I hate and will never ever go back to again for the rest of eternity. :)

All stylist over book. I just had my hair cut. It took 3 hours for the cut, color, and everything that went with it. After 3 hours the stylist turned me arouind in the chair to see the end result, she didn’t come close to what I asked her to do. I could have wrapped my hands around her neck! I wanted to scream. I drove home looking in the rear view mirror and saying I can’t believe she did this.

It took a week or more for it to grow on me, but I now love it. I hadn’t had my hair cut in 10 years. Now I’m saying, I should have done this long ago.

i could never spend 4 1/2 hours in a salon. in my opinion, that’s crazy. if i’m having my hair colored, i’m with my stylist for 1 to 1 1/2 hours. and that’s long enough for me.

As a stylist it makes me a little nuts when others overbook…it’s what happens at most doctor and dentist offices too and it really helps no one. Definitely a short term gain long term loss deal. Another problem though is clients that show up late…if your first appointment of the day shows up 15 minutes late you’re behind all day. There’s no way to make that up and it affects everyone else too. :(

Hugs,
Holly

OK, the one time it took 4 1/2 hours to do my hair, it was because the stylist liked to talk more than I did. With every cut he’d brake into a 20 minute story or memory. My haircut was fabulous, but I don’t have the time to go to him everytime. I usually end up waiting 30-45 minutes for about a 20 minute cut.
