The Year’s Best Toy

November 5, 2008

Why is it that kids are more interested in playing with the boxes that the toys come in than the toys themselves? Are your kids like this, too?

Oh yes…I can’t even wrestle a shoe box away from my oldest!

Yeah… my husband made my son a “full size” train out of two boxes. He can climb in and we push him around. He LOVES it! The pushing part, we don’t love so much! :)

I’m always saying, what’s the point in buying toys? We should just give them the boxes, lol.

For sure! We have concidered just giving the little kids boxes before, lol.
My husband’s family always jokes when we open presents “A box!” They get all worked up over the box long before they open the box. Goofy.

Totally!! Right now my kids are into building a fort with foam cups.. For $2, it’s the best toy ever!! They play together for hours.

Sheesh! When I get a big box in the mail, my kids go crazy! You’d think they’ve never seen a box before!!

I got a big one recently, and I told them they couldn’t keep it because I wanted to use it to keep recyclables in, and they looked at me as if I said I’d killed Santa Claus!! ;)

Nina said:

Yep!!! Their must be something magical about those boxes.

You need to get the book “Not a Box” by Antionette Portis. Barnes and Noble has a few of the pages on their site…

Elizabeth said:

Yep, us too! My daughter will get inside a box and ask us to close the flaps and then sit there for a while before popping out and yelling “boo!”. It’s so cute. Your daughter is adorable!

Boxes are so cool! Though it’s generally been my cat that’s more interested in them than my baby is!

We bought a new fridge one year and the kids played with the box for weeks. Had to finally get rid of it, since it was taking up half the living room!

So cute! Kids really love to play with boxes. I remember when I was young, my brother and I loved playing with boxes too. We used them to build imaginary fortress. :)

That’s such a cute photo! My daughter likes to slide across our tile floor on empty dog food bags. We just found that out today!

Boxes have become cars, puppet show theatres, houses, and so on! Why in the world do we spend so much $ on toys???

Love the photo!

I used to take boxes of all sorts, shapes, and sizes and create things with them as a kid. It was truly some of the most fun I had.
