Yup, I caught a cold.
It’s kind of a bummer since I just got back from a layover where I should have been shopping. Instead, I spent it in bed trying to get some much needed rest. Nothing worse than being sick and away from home. Although, I did get to sleep 13 hours in one stretch!
When I called DH at home, he asked if I took Airbornne or Sudafed or Robitussun or any other kind of OTC medicine. Nope. Just a lot of liquids and rest. Those type of medications don’t seem to really work for me. And they’re so expensive that I really can’t afford the trial-and-error method.
What about you? What kind of OTC medicines have you found to work? Maybe if I can narrow it down a bit, I’ll head on over to WalMart later and check it out.
*sniff-sniff*

Are you sure you’re not just playing hookie so you can play some Sally’s Salon? Just kidding. Hope you feel better soon! (Drixoral is my standby for congestion—the only thing that works for me…but it tends to give me a little buzz…)

We tend to use nyquil at nite when we get sick. Wal-Mart sells a generic and it comes in both liquid and gel-caps.
Have you heard of Ayr? I really like using their gel (aloe and saline) nasal moisturizer when flying long trips. I blogged about it, in case you are interested. If the dry plane air bothers you, you’ll love it. It’s cheap and you can find it at Wal-Mart also.
I hope you get better soon!

Personally, I’m a fan of good ol’ Vitamin C. Hubby and I get them in the cough drop form, and I swear they cut the cold down from 10 days to 3. And make it not as bad. As soon as I get even a tickle, I pull out the C and pop a couple. Maybe it’s just a mind thing, but they totally work.
Good luck on the cold! Hope you feel better soon!

I’m more of your persuasion. I don’t take medicine unless I absolutely have to. About the only thing I can’t sleep through (with Tylenol PM) is a sore throat so if hot tea isn’t working then I try cough drops (only Hall lemon ones without the medicine centers) and finally if that doesn’t work then I have some Chloraseptic spray. It usually does the trick.
Oh, and to make it go away faster, gargle with warm salt water. This will kill germs in your throat!
I hope you’re feeling better soon!
Side note: I met some friends at church yesterday. They got stuck in Hawaii for 4 extra days over Spring Break because of those 2 airlines going out of business! The first flight they could book was for April 16th, but they managed to get on standby on day 4! Crazy!

I never really try to take any medicine when i’m sick. I usually get a carton of OJ and make sure I keep up on the vitamin C.
Oh also, I do the chicken noodle soup thing, or I make some ginger tea. the ginger really helps.

I try to avoid meds, and just use vitamins and water. However, during my last 3 week episode of sickness I use Day and nyquil, with some success.

I like the Ziacam nasal swabs. They are like a Q-tip covered in goo that has the Zinc in it…you rub one of those around in your nose for a bit. They recommend 3X per day for a few days…but I usually just manage once or twice. I do see a significant decrease in the durration of my illness.
But I’m quite the germaphobe. The other day at Church I was giving both me & DD the hand sanitizer before we went up for communion. They have us Share the Peace and then go up for communion… There are some days when I just wanna move instead of shaking hands with those people. :p

Anything that kickstarts your immune system is good for me. I always liked tincture of echinacea, although it tastes yuck, its very good.
In Canada, we have a wonderful product called ColdFX and I cannot say enough good things about it. I try to buy it when it’s on sale though.

Tylenol severe cold & congestion daytime warded off all of the stuffy sinus problems during the day, and vicks/mentholatum rub all over my feet (and put socks on over the top) helped tremendously at night.
I got my cold a week ago Saturday, and it’s on its way out today. 8 days. blech - but better than the average 2-4 weeks.

Other than Vitamin C and echinacea, Airborne seems to do pretty well. It all depends on what has you down. I also like hot tea with honey. I hope you feel better soon!

Kailani, I hope you are feeling better today!
For me, I can’t afford OTC meds either, I buy the generic version of Tylenol severe cold & congestion daytime. The only problem I have, even if it says non-drowsy, it still makes me sleepy.

My husband has been sick for almost a week. Nasty cold & hacking cough. He won’t take anything cause he’s a baby. Comtrex works for me sometimes. One time, I had his gawd awful cold & I even lost my voice. A friend of mine gave me a shot of whiskey. Yuck! Within 1/2 hour though, I had my voice back. I was tipsy but talking!
And not coughing or sniffling.
I hope you’re feeling better

I try to avoid the OTC solutions too - I just don’t like how they make me feel, on top of being sick to begin with. Generally I stick with Motrin or Tylenol and a lot of Vitamin C. And cough drops, if needed.
I hope you’re feeling better soon!!

I still love the Vick’s Vapor Rub to put on my chest, throat and under my nose. Other than that a simple cough drop or something to sooth an itchy throat and a sleep aid like Tylenol PM are the only things that seem to do much for me. Mostly I focus on sleep too!
Hugs,
Holly

both my girls have been sick for over a week. the oldest is worse, so i finally took her to the doctor. we came home with cough syrup and ear drops for her inflamed ear. if she’s not better in 2 days we have to fill a scrip for antibiotic for bronchitis. they also said that she needs to take sudafed, which must be good for decongestant. i find that most otc’s don’t work for me either…i always stay sick longer than most because of my thyroid problems. the allergies are a killer right now so i’m taking qvar and abuterol inhalers plus a scrip nasal spray. i could probably start my own pharmacy w all my meds! LOL

Hands down. Sudafed. And it’s contraband here in Oregon. One has to get a prescription to get it, so I always stock up when I’m in other states. Didn’t I hear somewhere that Airbornne is being sued because their product doesn’t work? Hope you feel better!

For coughs i like to buy Delsym. It works really well for the kids. For fever i buy Motrin, for anytihng else, i try to stay away from unless i really need it. I do like sudafed, but i think everything else(almost) is junk and not worth buying.
10:19 pm
Unfortunately, I’m like you. None of those medicines seem to work for me. They either hype me up or knock me out, and NEVER get rid of my symptoms. We just opt for liquids, rest, and LOTS of vitamin C!

Since I am nursing I am extremely limited on what I can take OTC. When I have had colds this fall and winter I was told to take plain Mucinex to help with the congestion. My brother is a pharmacist and doubted that it would work. His wife a PA told me to give it a shot. I am not a firm believer in the stuff. It does amazing work for me.
Feel better and rest as much as you can.

I love the Vapo plugs if you’re stuffed up at night. It’s like Vicks Vaporub and glade plug in rolled into one. Whenever any of us gets a cold it’s the first thing I pull out. I find nothing works as well as getting a good night rest and these really help with that.

I am sorry about your cold. When I first start to sniffle, I start taking garlic and ecchinnecea(I cannot spell that word). I take it three times a day and I usually feel right as rain in a day or so.

The OTC meds never do much for me, either. I still like Vicks Vapor Rub the best! And vitamin C and Zinc.
