This photo was taken over on the Windward Side of the island of Oahu.
In the middle of that blue pacific ocean is Manana Island (locals call it Rabbit Island). The shape of the island actually resembles a rabbit but it originally got it’s name because a long time ago, a rancher released a bunch of rabbits there and they started to multiply. Today the island serves as a seabird sanctuary.

Oh, man, looking at that photo just about kills me. I wanna be there.
WHY would someone release a bunch of rabbits on an island? LOL I’m trying to think of what the reason was behind that.
5:11 am
so the end of the story??? are there still rabbits, or just birds?
you know I love bird sanctuaries.

Dh didn’t tell me there were rabbits on Rabbit Island when we saw it…I got pictures! My pictures look pretty much like yours. Of course if he had told me that there were rabbits, I might have swimmed out to it. LOL
And boy is it ever windy there…although not quite as windy as Nuuanu Pali or is that Puu Konahuanui. I’m looking at my map to try to figure out where we were. Anyway it was blowing the flash open on my camera.

Oh my! As soon as I saw this picture I thought, “I’VE BEEN THERE!” Of course, it was 1985, but the rabbit looks the same.
I’ve got to get back there someday!

I think you must win the prize for the most beautiful water! After all, isn’t that what Hawaii is known for?

This is a beautiful shot. I love the stories of feral animals let loose on an island.

Okay, call me warped, but I see the rabbit shape - the hump is the rabbit hump, right? lol I can’t help but wonder if the rabbits on that island would have evolved into a water creature as they learned to adapt to the water to swim to the other shore. *grin* I do wonder why they released rabbits on that island though. Experimentation? Or have I been watching too much Lost?
Or maybe it’s just too early in the morning for me to attempt clever comments? lol
Enjoy the weekend!

Whoohoo! Isn’t our homeland simply beautiful? Can’t wait to get back. Windward side has alot of nice beaches. So does Wai’anae for that matter. Just 2 weeks and 6 days left till I leave this cowboy country.

I have seen several pictures from Hawaii today while visiting around and the color of the water never ceases to amaze me. So emerald green - blue and then such a deep royal blue out in deeper waters. Magnificent.

Incredible beauty beyond words to do it justice. Thanks for sharing this with the rest of us.

Just blogrolling around and found you. Saw the Oahu pic and got a little giddy, as we’re on our way to Lanai/Maui in a few weeks. Ah, I can taste the umbrella drinks now.
Very, very cool blog BTW.

Ahh! I love that photo. Takes me back almost 7 years (already? wow) to our trip when we were still “almost parents”. Loved driving by and looking at Rabbit Island. Gotta get back there one day!!!

From rabbits to birds, whatever the ‘inhabitants’ are, this place looks fabulous!

Another gorgeous photo. Ahh the daily inspiration you must get just from where you live is incredible.

That is gorgeous. You’re so lucky to live where you do. I’m jealous :p

I don’t want to even ask what happened to the rabbits! The people on the beach are so tiny! Beautiful photo.

Gorgeous pic! Mine is up too and it’s from Hawaii - Hanauma Bay. We were there a few months ago.

That’s a very beautiful place. Thanks for sharing the story behind the name of the island. I guess the rabbits multiplied in a short period of time and became abundant in the island. It looks like a lovely place for a vacation.
Thanks for visiting my photo hunt. Enjoy the week ahead.

I cant realize how its supposed to look like a rabbit!
(I'll take good care of it.)
