We’re Going To Disneyland!

And Universal Studios. And Knotts Berry Farm. And shopping!

We’ve decided to take a family vacation to Southern California next month and we leave on Christmas Day. We plan to spend Baby Bug’s 3rd birthday and New Year’s Eve in the Magic Kingdom. How cool is that?

I’ve been doing some research and heard that they have birthday party packages at the various character restaurants complete with goody bags for all the kids. Have any of you ever done that before? Do you think it’s worth the price?

Also, just how crazy crowded is Disneyland on New Year’s Eve? Is the fireworks show different than the ones they usually have?

Any advice?

That sounds great. I envy you. I haven’t been to Disneyland at Anaheim but was at DisneyWorld Florida. I’m sure it’s going to be impressive. I was in HongKong Disneyland early December of 2006 and there was make believe snow. I’m sure Disney magic will be all around you.

Wow, what a great way to ring in the New Year! I’ve never been to Disneyland, so I can’t answer your questions, but I hope you have a great time!

I don’t know about New Years Eve but we were there the week of Christmas a few years back and it was bliss. We didn’t have to wait in line to get on any of the rides! You guys are going to have so much fun! But be sure to pack a light jacket because even though its So. Cal the temps. can dip into the low 50’s there that time of year. You just never know.

I haven’t been this time of year, but I can only imagine all the fun you will have. Can’t wait to hear all about it when you get back!!

We love Disney at Christmas Time, the fireworks are amazing and if you are on main street during them they have tiny bubbles that come out and it looks like it is snowing. The lines are a little longer than the off seasons and the weekends are bit crazier than the weekdays but you will still have a blast! I haven’t been to Disney actually on New Year’s Eve but I have heard that they have a special ring in the New Year fireworks and that all guests get party favors that night along with the park staying open until 2 am. Your daughters will be in heaven at all of the parks! Have a great time!

Sounds like fun! I’ve always wanted to do Disney for a holiday, but it’s unlikely this year. I have no advice, but I’m betting it will be crowded!

  7. Renee says:

We were just there after Halloween. Lines were pretty short after the initial rush. When the park first opens the rides closer to the gates are a bit busy. We waited about 15 min for the Astro Orbiter and 30 min for the go carts. But after that we waited no more than 5 min. We walked right on to Space Mountain!

Knotts was EMPTY! We walked right onto every ride that we chose to go on…although there were lots of rides that were closed (none that we wanted though!) If we had gone to Knotts first, I don’t think that DD would have wanted to go to Disney…so it’s good we went to Disney first.

    We didn’t do Universal though.

How wonderful, you’ll have to let me know how it is during Christmas, I have never taken my kids to Disneyland in all the years that we have been living here in Washington. Sounds like fun!

  9. Melissa says:

We were there a week ago :) At first we were going to go on Thanksgiving Day, but found an article that said it was in the top 5 busiest days at the park. So is Christmas and New Years. But, you never know!
I’m sure you’re already aware of this site, but I thought I’d pass it along anyway…

It had some really great ideas and tips on it :)
And ditto to the person who said to bring jackets. When we were there last week, Baby Girl wore hers in the morning and then, after the sun set, wanted it again. It was pretty chilly! The Chrismas decor is awesome! And they do have the bubble machine that makes it look like it’s snowing on Main Street :) HAVE FUN!!!

Oh, and make sure to check out a map before you go. I’m not sure if your girls are into the Disney Fairies, but they added a new area called “Pixie Hollow” where you can meet and greet Tinker Bell and her friends

I’ve not been there on New Year’s but we took our kids for birthdays and did the whole kit and kaboodle and it was AWESOME! The kids really loved all the special attention and I can’t think of a better place to spend your birthday as a child then at Disneyland!! Can’t wait to hear about all your fun!

    Hugs,
    Holly

i HATE disneyland LOL the rest of your trip i do like tho! we went to disneyland this summer and it was so ridiculously crowded. i’m not a big fan of crowds & amusement parks..but, i do what i gotta do to see the kids happy and having a good time. i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE so. cal better than nor cal (where i live). i grew up in san diego.

anyways, i know you will have fun and so will your kids. i think i’m just a big stick in the mud to my family hehe

Sounds like a blast! Love Disney and Universal but have only been to Florida for them.

Disneyland on New Years Eve will be crazy busy, but will be highly staffed so wait times / lines will be a wash. The fireworks are always special and they will be open till 2am. To me the chaos and massive crowds are part of newyears eve at DL. :-) Universal and Knotts will likely be very quiet midweek especially, things have been rather dismal in OC/LA as far as tourism goes lately because of the economy.

  15. Mozi Esme's Mommy says:

Got no advice for you, but it sure sounds like fun! One of my main reasons for having a kid was so I could have an excuse to go back to Disneyland. (no really, she was entirely unplanned, but that idea did add joy to the news!)

  16. Jamie says:

ive never been to disneyland or disney world, but i would love to go! i hope you have a great vacation.

  17. Tena says:

you will be in my neck of the woods! We have passes to Disneyland. Disneyland can get a bit crowded during winter break around here, but you will have a blast just the same!

  18. Krista says:

I have no advice for you. Sounds like fun though! I went once and only once… to Disneyland when I was 10. I think I’d already lost the magic, but wasn’t quite old enough to not be scared of the big rides. Made it kind of lame… ;)

  19. Lisa in California says:

We live 20 minutes from Disneyland and have annual passes. Our passes are blocked out for New Years Eve which is a sure sign that it will be crowded, but it’s always fun. The best times to go are actually rainy days and during the month of February. The “snow” happening at Sleeping Beauty’s castle is really something fun to see. You’ll have a great time so don’t let the crowds scare you. If you can stay at the Disneyland hotel, do it because you get advantages in the park by doing so (early admission is just one).

In regard to birthday parties, the character meals are fun and they are very good about spending focused time with each child, but it can take them awhile to get to your table. There’s a party celebration in the park with the characters that’s fun (we did it this year), but it’s pretty expensive for what you get…isn’t everything though. Each person attending gets their own little cake to decorate and several of the characters arrive and take pictures with the birthday child. It lasts about an hour and (if I remember correctly) cost something like $15-25 per person. There’s no other food served and it’s such a short time that I’m glad we only did it once and with just our immediate family.

Make sure that they give Baby Bug a birthday pin upon entering the park. It’s free and will get her occasional perks (front of the character signing lines etc.) as well as having the crew members wish her a happy birthday all day long.

Hope you have a wonderful trip!

sounds like a fun trip. me and my family will be out there for Christmas, too. we’ve done disneyland enough, but my kids have never been to knott’s. so we’ll be visiting that amusement park.

i have heard that new year’s day is the busiest day of the year at disneyland. we went one year on the day after Christmas, and it was a mad house.

i wonder if the economy has had an effect on the crowds at the happiest place on earth. your girls are going to love it.

  21. Cindy Lietz, Polymer Clay Tutor says:

Make sure to bring a stroller with you and lots of water and snacks! The food is expensive and my kids get tummy aches from eating too much take out food.

Have a great time… It really is the happiest place on earth!

  22. Devin @ CoolProducts says:

I don’t know about the specific birthday packages, But I can tell you that the restaurants that I went to at Disney World were some of the best I’d ever been to in terms of atmosphere.

  23. Forgetfulone says:

That’s great! You’ll have so much fun.

  24. Lissete says:

We have only been to WDW for NYE. Mad, crazy crowded. That being said, when we went we weren’t really planning on riding rides so we didn’t have to deal with the lines… just the crowds. It was fun though, just be prepared.

I don’t have experience with the b-day party, but if you go to City Hall (don’t know if it’s the same in DL) you can get Baby Bug a birthday button and everyone will pay extra attention to her :)

  25. Rach (Heart of Rachel)f says:

How exciting! I’m sure the kids are very excited already.

  26. Romie says:

I just recently took my little one to Disneyland and she LOVED it – you are going to have so much fun.

  27. Disney online store says:

I believe that the firework will change every year to attract same people like us to keep coming!

    Disneyland Rockz!
