The First Day of Kindergarten

Anxiety. That’s the word that described how I was feeling this morning.

For the last 2 weeks, I’ve been preparing you for your big adventure – the first day of Kindergarten. We talked about the teachers, friends, and first crush you left behind in preschool. We talked about the big school you’ll be attending, the uniforms they wear, and the new friends you’ll make. We talked about the daily homework you’ll bring home that Mommy hopes she remembers how to do. We talked about growing up.

And grown up you sure are. I still remember those toddler years when you suffered from severe separation anxiety. You were constantly glued to my right leg and would throw a fit every time I went to the restroom. We couldn’t even leave you at Grandma’s house! Even though Grandma sometimes has a hard time hearing, you gave her a headache from your constant crying. This led me to decide to go back to work only part-time, a decision I’ve never regretted. It allowed me to experience every step of your childhood which I enjoyed (almost) every minute of.

Today you’re 5 years old and experiencing your very first day of Kindergarten. Where did all the time go? You decided you wanted to walk to school and along the way we talked about all the great things you’ll learn. When we got there, you sat quietly in line outside your classroom door and waited for the bell to ring. And when the teacher arrived, you gave me a kiss and walked into the room, never looking back. Thank goodness because you would have seen me crying tears of pride, happiness, and relief. Relief because you chose to be a big girl and made things a little eaiser for me.

On the walk home, as Baby Bug spoke in a language that only she understands, I realized that I’m going to have to go through this again in about 4 years. I think that should be just enough time to prepare myself again. But then again, are you ever really prepared for your children to grow up?

Okay, I know this is more than just a photo but I couldn’t help it. *wink* If you like what you see, please stop by Write From Karen and vote for me or any of the other great participants. You have from Friday 4pm CST till Sunday 8pm.

Have your kids started school yet?

Girlie Girl looks really happy happy and excited to be starting school! How great for her! My elder 2 are in school – the eldest has another year before going to high school (am sure I’ll be emotional when that happens), and I’m gonna send LP to a playschool after I stop working (in a month or 2!) and I’m feeling anxious too!;-)

  2. Michelle says:

Awww, what a precious photo! My little boy isn’t old enough, but I will dread his first day of school…

  3. Deb says:

What a great photo – she looks so happy and proud for her first day!

My oldest is starting 1st grade this year and my second is starting Young 5’s (pre-K) so they’ll both go off on the bus together in 18 days (can you tell we’re counting down, LOL!).

Good luck in the contest! :)

  4. Summer says:

This was such a cute post. Made me smile!
My oldest starts kindergarten in 10 days but I don’t have to send him off to school. I’ll be homeschooling him (until we move into a decent school district).
I’m glad her first day went so well and that she behaved for mommy.

  5. Grace says:

nice shot! she is very happy to go to school, better than crying on the way — that will broke her mom’s heart all the more!

    goodluck on the contest!

  6. tracey says:

I’m so happy for you both that it went so well.

I’m gearing up for my middle’s first day of Kindergarten… more days….

  7. Renee says:

Our “first day” wasn’t at school of course, but we did have one. And just like GG, my DD ran off without a second glance. *sniff*
But we had the failed attempt too. When she went to her first ever day of Vacation Bible School I was teaching the games class and DD’s group was supposed to go and make the snacks. Well the snacks ladies were not ready on day one for these little guys and DD could see me on the other side of the window. She was just sitting there with nothing to do and didn’t know what was happening. So she started crying. Fortunately, I had nothing to do (because on the first day the p-k does the snacks first) so I could go be with her. As it turned out the snacks ladies never did get their stuff together and they had to make the snacks w/o the p-k kiddos help. And DD & I could just hang out together. She did great for the rest of the time and had great stories to tell me later.

What a big, brave girl… and brave mommy too! She is going to have so much fun at school!

  9. mcewen says:

Wow, what a beaming smile. We still have a few weeks to go until the inevitable school starts again.
    Cheers

  10. Dana says:

awww – how sweet. Loved the thoughts behind this photo. THanks for sharing. I share your sentiments. They grow up too fast.

  11. Stacey says:

She’s lookin so grown up and so happy! I’m empathizing with you and cannot tell you it gets easier, it does not. xo

  12. Melissa says:

What a great photo! She looks so happy! We have a couple of weeks before school starts here. It’s too hot. 112 yesterday… hopefully it will have cooled just a tad so the kids can play outside a little bit. :)
Next year my last one goes into kindergarten. Most of the time I’m excited… other times, I’m just not sure :S

  13. Desert Songbird says:

I think I obsessed over the first day of kindergarten much more than either of my kids ever did. And my kids went to half-day kindergarten, so they were home after two and half-hours!

The first day of first grade was rough on me as well since it was the first day of all-day school. Now we’re all old pros at it, and I don’t get obsessed until the end of the day when we hit the homework.

You did well, Kailani! Don’t forget this feeling.

  14. Holly Schwendiman says:

Awwwww, way to go Girly Girl! You do grow too quickly – but how can why not have a smile with our tears when we see happy faces like this?!

    Hugs,
    Holly

  15. rach says:

Thanks for sharing this lovely photo and story. My son started attending preschool this year. School year started last June. On his first day, I seemed more nervous and at the same time excited than him. He was so shy on his first day and a little unsure of the new environment. The teacher allowed the parents to stay with the kids during the first few days to get them accustomed to the idea of being there. It’s been a few months already and my son has adjusted well in class. He loves his teachers and has made a lot of new friends in school.

  16. wendy says:

Jayke starts school on the 28th, preshool. I’m sure I will be experiencing separation anxiety from now until then. I bet it won’t be anything like when he goes to kindergarten though.

  17. Jen @ One Moms World says:

Look at that smile… so cute! Let us know how her first day went.

My daughter’s birthday is late so she will start kindergarten next year. She will start preschool Monday for three hours each day and I’m just so sad about that :( . I will post a picture then of her first day!

    Have a good weekend :)

  18. Melli says:

Awwwww… I did not actually cry when my FIRST child went off to kindergarten… but I sure did cry when my LAST ones went! Now they are ALL graduated from high school and my BABY is heading off to college next week! Talk about growing up…. *whew*

I bet Girly Girl had a GREAT day today! And you will LOVE hearing ALL about her adventures in learning!!! :)

  19. Angela says:

You’ve got my vote…that is a priceless photo! She looks so proud! Way to go, GG!

  20. Lulu says:

OMG…she’s smiling so proudly that her eyes are closed!

Oh, kindergarten. It’s only the beginning, Kailani. Brace youself! And have fun watching HSM tonight!

  21. Christine says:

Look how proud and happy GG is. Hope you both had a great day. Imagine all the fun stories she’ll tell you about school. That’s my favorite part of the day. When Marissa went to K, I cried. When Josh went to K, I was so nervous, to have someone else taking care of him.
I’m not looking forward to taking Lindsay to K, even though she’d be the last, LOL, I might go through ‘empty nest’ syndrome.

  22. WendyWings says:

She looks so happy and proud, it is 11 months since my little Miss Five started school, she was fine I wasn’t so much lol.
    Happy Weekend

  23. Write From Karen says:

Awww. Could she SMILE any bigger?!

She looks so happy and sweet. I hope she’s liking school!

    Thanks for playing, Kailani!!

my anti spam word was rainbow.
perfect description for what was shining in that face.

hey.. the 2nd one is easier (maybe)

  25. Tonya says:

My Lu Lu started K 5 this year. She went to the same school where she went to K4 so she was totally at ease. Girlie Girl looks like she is ready for the time of her life.

I knew Lu Lu was fine when as we pulled up she looked at me and said “just drop me off – okay”. It broke my heart but I obliged. I posted her first day photo here: http://thereisaseason.typepad.com/there_is_a_season/2007/08/yesterday-today.html

  26. JHS says:

I love how excited she looks!

  27. annaliza @ ventanawhos candid says:

    she’s soooo cute!

x0 to mom… i’m preparing myself for my little “baby bug’s” first day of kindy. i’m a bit more emotional than i expected and it’s a year away… =I

  28. tiggerprr says:

awwwe! I remember this day like it was yesterday…and I’m feeling a little sad…as I’m realizing that in just one week…it’ll be the “first day of school” for the last time since Ashlyn will be a Senior this year. I seriously doubt she’ll let me take her to school much less let me take a picture of her at school before she goes in.

  29. Waya says:

*sniffle sniffle* same here when my son went to 1st grade…he never looked back. I hope he does look back when he goes off to get married. *more sniffles*

  30. JustJessie says:

You’re so much braver than me! I couldn’t face sending Grayson to school yet; that’s part of why we’re homeschooling (not the only reason of course, but part of it). It’s a big day, and you’ve got a precious picture to remember it by!

  31. exskindiver (chesca) says:

    cute photo,
but more importantly, a great post.
i felt your emotion in your writing.
    i voted already *wink*

  32. momto3cubs says:

Congratulations, Girlie Girl! Kindergarten is so much fun!

Here in Wisconsin, public school can’t start until at least Sept. 1st (due to the tourism industry needing the employees!), so my boys will have their first day on Sept. 4th after Labor Day weekend. Many private schools here start August 22nd or 27th.

  33. BeachMama says:

GG looks so cute and excited for her first day. We will be experiencing the same thing in a few weeks. I just hope I don’t cry too hard.

  34. TopChamp says:

your kids are so cute! Big day for both of you but I’m sure she loved it?

  35. Jamie says:

She looks so cute and happy!

My oldest started kindergarten last week, too. She was brave and so excited. I was so proud of her. She’s still loving school!

It’s hard to watch our babies grow up, isn’t it?
