It’s Back To Work I Go

April 3, 2008

After much discussion and deliberation, I’ve decided to go back to work full-time beginning June 1st.

Now before you start sending your sympathies, you should probably know that full-time is considered anything above 75 hours a month. That may not seem like a lot but coming from someone who’s been working 35 hours a month for the last 7 years, this is a big adjustment for me.

Luckily, this won’t affect the girls too much. Girlie Girl is in school all day and Baby Bug would need go to Grandma’s for a few hours every Thursday. Other than that, DH and I can still work opposite schedules so that someone will always be here to help with homework or to take them to various activities. In addition, I could always drop trips on a monthly basis to accommodate any other needs that may arise. That’s one great thing about our job - it’s flexible.

So why the change? We’ve finally decided that moving to a better school district would be in the best interest for our family. To do so, I would need to show a more steady flow of income if we are to have any hope of qualifying for a home loan. Once this is completed, I’ll probably go back to part-time status again.

I don’t know how this will affect my blogging or online boutique, but I’m pretty sure it will be business & fun as usual. At the very least, it should provide me with more entertaining passenger stories!

I hear that housing is wicked expensive in Hawaii. Don’t you have to show a few years of the new salary to qualify?
Hope it works out smoothly!

Grandma’s are heaven sent! I couldn’t work full time without my mother having to take care of my daughter after school!

Goodluck to you and hoping to read many more interesting stories. As for blogging, I guess if you have your laptop with you then anything is possible. Right?

Sounds like its going to be an easy adjustment! That is wonderful you and your husband can word oppsosite schedules for the kids. It should only take a few months of showing the new income if you have already been working and before you know it you will be in a new home! Good luck with everything!

Hmmm…either way, it’s going to be an adjustment. I haven’t worked in a corporate job since 1996, and now that I’m technically “disabled,” I’m not sure I ever will again. Still, I know you enjoy your trips as mini-vacations, but it will be different.

I can understand the reasons why; that’s the same reason my husband works his tail off, so that we can stay in this school’s boundaries.

You know what, Kailani! If ANYONE can work full-time hours and still find time for family, giveaways and blogging, it’ll be you.

I know what you mean about the extra money issue. My husband is really wanting to retire in 10 years and I really want to help him reach that goal. So I’ve been seriously considering getting a part-time job at a bookstore so we can save money faster.

And I really admire how you and DH work together to ensure the kids are always with one or the other of you. I worked nights for seven years to avoid leaving the kids with daycare, so I KNOW the type of sacrifices you guys are making. Bravo.

Well wishes from Missouri!

I agree with Karen above! I think you’ll have no problems. You are a super woman in my book Kailani! Sorry I haven’t been visiting your blog lately….I am trying to start making the rounds again. I’ve just had to concentrate on other things lately. I’ve missed you :)

I’m sure everything will work out with going back to work more hours.

The hours and flexibility truly are one of the great things about working for the airlines. I hope however that you will soon be able to go back to part time. Are you based in Hawaii? Are yu considered international?
Good luck Kailani.

I can understand the feeling of wanting a better school for the girls. My SIL just moved, and now my husband and I are thinking in the near future, but it’ll definetly be when I’m able to go back to work either part time or full time, still is debateable.

I know everything will work out for the best for you and your family! Just think, all the more fun and interesting stories for you to tell us about!

If I remember correctly, full-time for flights to/from Hawaii is something like a couple days a week, so it seems like it shouldn’t be too hard to adjust (for you anyway). It might be a little harder for the family back home, having you gone a few more nights each month. But it sounds like you have things planned out well. Good luck!
