How Quickly Time Passes

January 26, 2007

Today I put a stamp on the envelope and dropped it into the mailbox.

With it went a little piece of my heart.

Was it a letter to a far away relative? A draft of my living will? Tax papers?

No, it was Girlie Girl’s application to Kindergarten.

Where did all the time go? First Baby Bug turns 1 and now Girlie Girl will be leaving preschool! What happened to my babies?

We finally decided to send her to a public elementary school in a different district by applying for a geographic exception. The elementary school in our home district is not too bad but I don’t want her eventually going to the local high school here. There were actually a couple of planned drive-by shootings in the area. Police were warning residents to be careful.

Huh? We paid a fortune for our home and we have to watch out for gang members?

The school we’re going to try and get Girlie Girl into the #1 rated public school in the state. I know our chances are slim to none since they have to first consider the “No Child Left Behind” program, kids in their own district, kids of their teachers, and siblings of current students. However, we won’t know unless we try, right?

So, wish us luck. Otherwise, I’m going to have to work a second job to help pay for private school tuition. Or, God forbid, cut back on my shopping! Yikes!

I wish you luck. In all honesty I wanted to move to Big Island, but the schools are 1/2 the reason we decided to wait. Like you said, not bad but…..and the private schools? I would need to sell a kidney.

Imagine how I feel, preparing my baby for COLLEGE. I will be a blubbering wreck the day he leaves.

Kindergarten? No way?

BTW, how’d Baby Bug’s first birthday party go? I’m sure it was quite a bash. :)

I remember sending Bonnie Lass off to kindergarten for the first time. I had an even more emotional time sending her to first grade (kindergarten is half-day here). They say it’s a cliche that “time flies” but watching one’s own children go from infant to school kid in record time really brings that cliche home.

I think you’re smart to think of the long-term when it comes to your daughter’s educational opportunities. I also think it’s really strange that you apparently live in a nice neighborhood but the school has crime problems! The biggest problem with the schools in our immediate area is they keep getting vandalized by local kids who are bored and spoiled. Sigh. Anyway, we all know that in the end we’ll make whatever sacrifices are necessary for our kids. It’s what we do and what we are as parents, right?

Hang in there, and rest assured - Girlie Girl will still need you as her Mommy for a few years yet.

**We live in the newer part of a very old community. Unfortunately, due to zoning, our home is closer to the older schools rather than the newer ones.

I SO know the feeling. My baby went to preschool this year and all I could do was sit and wonder how my babies could possibly be 9 and 4!!

I feel that my life sould have the song Sunrise Sunset continually playing… As where DOES the time go…
And it was only yesterday when I walked the floors in the wee hours of the morning with my wee gal… and she is now nine…This coming birthday she will be in double digits!!!!
Good luck on the road of education…

You can always send her to boarding school…Empress Kukka-Maria’s Boarding School.

We teach the fundamentals, like cleaning your fur with your tongue, sassing your parents, red carpet etiquette and covering your turds when you finish in the litterbox (elective).

It’s relatively cheap and the only shootings we have are from paparazzi cameras.

** Hmmm . . .  I’m not sure I want her to become more of a diva than she already thinks she is! Although, there are worse things to be! :-)

Awww… good luck with that, I know I’ll be a gibbering mess when it happens for me!

Mostly de-lurking here, stopping to say hi. Can’t think of anything interesting or fun to say . . . . I know what you mean though about these babies of ours growing up so fast. My baby will be starting school next year - and I haven’t mailed that letter in yet, but the day is coming up on me FAST *snif*
Anywho . . .

** Thanks for leaving a comment! I really appreciate it! As for kindergarten starting . . . I was in denial for a long time. I actually put off sending in that application until the last minute. Good luck with that!

Ohhhhhh…..we are going through the exact same thing here. The school Luna is suppossed to go to has really low test scores and they keep threatening to close it, so we are doing the whole private school thing now probably. She goes to a Montessori school now and she is so advanced because of it. We just don’t want her to lose her love of learning. There is one really good public school we are trying to get into, but it doesn’t look good. I guess every parent wants their child to have only the best. Good luck!

I found it amusing that I would have had to sign DD up for kindergarden if I had wanted to send her. I guess because it isn’t mandatory here…they’re still fighting that in our congress.
They do grow up fast. I’m now in negotiations for DD to start confirmation classes at Church next year! YIKES! oh yeah, they’re on Wednesday nights and I just signed her up for Gymnastics on that night…we’ll either have to reschedule or be very busy!

Ah yes… the bittersweetness of K registration. I remember how it didn’t seem like it would be very long ’til I registered my first child. That has come and gone, and another one is in K. Now I just have the Monkey left…. sob.

That’s part of the reason we decided to leave Hawaii early: high crime and bad schools. Starting out our little family, those were really important to us. OK, and I was tired of having to get my car locks replaced all the time. Gated community, whatever.

Yup! Time sure does fly! Kamalani will start Kindergarten too. Her and Girlie Girl are the same age. I’m not sure which school my daughter plans to send her yet.

My turn is coming up in two weeks. I can’t believe it is time to register J for junior kindergarten. Fortunately for us the local school is right accross the street from our house and it is a pretty good one. Hope you get in to the one of your choice.

Best of luck. I hope she gets in.

I don’t have kids yet, but my friends have told me just how quickly time flies. I can imagine it was quite the step to mail that letter.
