An Update and An Award

September 29, 2008

After 4 hours at the hospital, 3 doctors, 2 x-rays, and 1 restless Baby Bug, the diagnosis was finally in . . . DH broke his collar bone. This is exactly what DH thought had happened but the emergency doctor we saw the night of the accident said that nothing was broken even after he took x-rays. In fact, the emergency room doctor told DH to exercise his arm 3 times a day by taking off the sling and rotating it. Today’s doctor said that DH is lucky that he didn’t do more damage to it.

The doctor restricted him from working for 6 - 8 weeks. Can anyone say, “O.M.G.”? The worst part is not that he’s the major bread winner of the family, it’s not that I’m going to have to work extra trips to try and make up for it, it’s not even the inevitable decrease in blogging I’m going to have to do. The worst part is . . . he’ll be home for 6 - 8 WEEKS! *am I shouting?*

Anyway, moving on . . .

Thank you again for a wonderful month of comments, advice, support, well wishes, & friendship. I know I’ve been slacking in the Commentor of the Month Award but I promise to make more of an effort to continue to recognize the person who has left the most comments for that month at An Island Life.

This month’s award goes to a new blogging friend - Amy @ My Life As A Trailer Park Mom. She describes herself as “a SAHM living life in a trailer park. It’s not the best life, but it’s our life, for now. One day, things will change, on God’s timing. Until then, we make the best with what we have. The kids are happy and healthy, which is what really matters, right?”

Now that’s what I call a positive attitude! I met Amy through her participation in Aloha Friday and really enjoy reading about her life as well as seeing photos of her beautiful children in her Wordless Wednesday posts. Every once in a while she’ll even share some great recipes that she’s come across. Stop by and check out her site - she’s a pretty cool blogger!

Amy will receive an item of her choice from my CafePress Store as well as a button to display on her sidebar. Thank you, Amy, for your friendship and comments!

The ER Doc at Castle said the same thing - no break, even with Xrays on my 3 year old. The follow up at the Ped said it was broken and it sure was!

Poor guy - I’ve been told it’s a LOT longer/harder to heal for adults vs. children.

When my husband was unemployed a few years back, he was home for SIXTEEN MONTHS. Talk about wanting to kill him! Oh well, he will heal and be back at work before you know it…and before you make a widow of yourself. *grin*

Oh man! That sounds painful & I’m glad that he didn’t hurt himself further, with the exercises! I hope the healing goes quickly! For him AND YOU! lol

When Michael was out of work, holy cow, I was never so happy for him to go back, lol.

And thank you for an awesome award! I was so not expecting that! Wow! I feel special! ;)

Ewwww I feel your pain. Whynot was unelmployed all last summer, it really put a cramp on my routine.

Love the commentor award, something to sets my sights on.

Doctors frustrate me so much, it seems like they never get it right the first time.

My husband is always out of work, I so feel for you!

I’m so sorry! I broke my collar bone when I was a baby, but I don’t remember it. I’m sure it’s painful, though. Poor you, too. 6-8 weeks!? AAAAHHHHHHHHH!

A broken collarbone sounds really painful, and the 6-8 weeks at home even more so! Musicman drives me nuts when he gets the flu once every FEW YEARS! I can’t imagine what would happen if he was stuck at home with a broken bone. I think there might be a death in the family…

Speedy recovery to DH, good luck managing the finances and consider loading up the house with valium and alcohol. Maybe if you’re out of it for 6-8 weeks it will pass quickly and just seem like bad dream.

Kelly :)

Once a month my husband is home for 5 days straight. At the end of the 3rd, I’m about ready for the looney bin. I cannot imagine 6 weeks! Good Luck! ;)

I hope he heals quickly,… for both of you!

Oh, I so agree, having him home that long is way worse than the lack of work, haha!
Well, I guess maybe not, I couldn’t make what my hubby makes, but thankfully he would still get paid for quite awhile on sick leave. And he could still work with one arm at a computer job. LOL
Praying your hubby recovers more quickly than they say. When my husband was burned they said he would be out of work for a looong time, but he was only out for 3 weeks! And that was with 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree burns all over his arms and face. Pray helps a ton!

Yay for Amy and yes, that does sound like a terrific outlook!

As for the Island Hubby…aw man….ouch! Glad you could get further knowledge before further injury but… 6-8 weeks?!?! YIKES!! Prayers, yep, prayers…that her will heal quickly and that you will be able to maintain some semblance of sanity!!! lol

Seriously though, if I can help you online somehow K, let me know!

Hugs!!

Oh, boy… six to eight weeks in which he probably shouldn’t hoist the girls around, either. I am so sorry!

OMG indeed…

Usually instincts are always right…too bad the ER dr was wrong.

Well, you’ll be very busy…but hopefully the 6-8 weeks will fly by…!

Thinking of you all…

I’m so thoroughly convinced that ER docs don’t know anything. My mom almost died last year because the ER doc wanted to send her home when she couldn’t breathe! I’m glad your DH didn’t do any more damage to his arm.

and yeah, if my DH were home for that long I think I might kill him too. I’ll be praying for you.

My DH broke his collarbone back in college and it was miserable for everyone involved (lucky for me, this was wayyyy before I met him!) but I’ve seen the pictures…it wasn’t pretty. And while the fused bone didn’t line up perfectly, for the most part he’s fine and it doesn’t bother him.

Perhaps you could keep your DH drugged for most of his recoop time? ;)

Sorry to hear he’s hurting and laid up for a while. I hope he isn’t a bad patient like the male people I know (hubby and oldest son as well as father and all brothers).

Same happened to me with a broken collar bone after a bad accident, apparently it is a pretty tricky injury. They only found it after I woke up in CRAZY pain apparently I had caused the 2 pieces to seperate somehow in my sleep.

Dear Kailani, I forgot to comment but I wanted to let you know how sorry I am for your DH and he is in my prayers. I hope he is not in too much pain. My heart goes out to him. And for you, too, as you will be playing nurse and having him home for so long. Not that we don’t love our husbands, but it sure does throw a damper in our routines, huh?

Hang in there girl! And remember HSM3 is coming soon!!

Ouch! Glad the problem is figured out now, but 6-8 weeks is an awful long time (unless you’re watching your kids grow up). Just focus one day at a time, and in a year it will be a vague memory . . .

Just see it as a dry run when you’re both retired and having an empty nest!

My husband works all the time. Is it really that bad if husband’s stay at home for a long time (as most of the comments here sounds)?
