An Early Morning Wake-Up Call

It was a peaceful, but rainy, Sunday morning in the neighborhood when all of a sudden a loud alarm disturbed my slumber. What the heck? As I jumped out of bed, tripped over something on the floor (can anyone say Lasik?), and ran to the window, the alarm got louder and louder.

A few years ago, the same thing happened only it was my neighbor’s car alarm that was going off. Apparently, my next door neighbor’s jeep was on fire and my car was parked right next to it. The guy across the street set off his car alarm to wake the neighborhood. Thank goodness because I would have slept right through it. My crazy husband started frantically searching for his keys. “Where do you think you’re going?” I asked. Believe it or not, he wanted to jump into the car and move it away. Did I ever tell you that I think he’s nuts sometimes?

Anyway, back to the current situation. As I looked out the window, I noticed a few of my curious neighbors out on the street in their pjs. They were all trying to figure out where this alarm was coming from. Well, turned out it was my car which was thankfully hiding behind the garage door. The thing that I tripped on ended up being Baby Bug playing with my car keys. Apparently, she hit the panic button on the remote and was happily turning it on and off again.

What is this fascination that kids have with grown-up things? I’ve given her toy versions of keys, cell phones, remote controls, mp3 players – some that actually look pretty realistic. However, all she wants is the real thing. My friends think it’s kind of cute but try letting them look for their smartphone for a week and let’s see how cute it is then.

So tell me, what item of yours do your kids love to play with?

Yohan also loves fiddling with the car keys and alarm.

It’s true, kids are attracted to grown-up things. For instance, he likes borrowing my cellphone and using the digicam.

My daughter loves to play with my phone and knows how to unlock it. About 3 years ago, she dialed a number of an ex! The number was just there because I don’t erase anything on my phonebook and my phone was 5 years old.

Nothing like waking up to a loud noise. My son loves the buttons on my keys as well. He also loves to plat with my pots and pans lids. They make great symbols…according to him.

By the way, your blog is beautifully designed! And so happy – it makes me smile to come here :)

Grant loves to play with my camera. If I ever leave it sitting within his reach, I have a memory card full of pictures of the ceiling, the carpet, his feet, whatever happened to be in the viewfinder when he hit the button. He could care less what he takes a picture of, he just likes the beeping noise! I’m thinking he and his brother will both be getting those Little Tykes cameras for Christmas!

Oh…that’s hilarious!! I bet you were SO glad your car was in the garage so you didn’t have to fess up in front of everyone. She’s gonna love hearing the story of how she “woke the whole neighborhood” when she’s a little older.

Haha, I remember that phone post, it was one of the funniest ever! So was your car okay? Gosh that’s not a good way to start the day.

I believe Niki once threw an entire set of keys away–never found them and she was in that throw things away stage because we applauded her when she threw her trash away! I’d advise against that to parents now, lol. We also lost a gold ring and a beautiful antique watch. Those could be down the heat vents, though. xo

lol! The keys are honestly my kids favorite thing to play with too.

OH, how embarassing!!! oh well…those things happen.

My son is too old to play with things like the keys. He just wants to play with my EXPENSIVE DIGITAL CAMERA!!! (and I think he broke my old one by being too rough with it)

When is your lasek scheduled for anyway?

I’m glad it wasn’t a real panic situation.
Lindsay does the same thing. We’ve given her toy cell phones, and keys, but she loves the real thing. Oh, and her new fascination is my laptop.
What I think is really cute is when she tries to put my makeup on. She does a very good job too.

Oops, my first thought was that I’d be jumpin’ in the car to move it, too.

My kid FREAKS OUT about wanting to use my phone and camera… the 2 things he most sees me using that are off limits to him. ;-)

  16. Renee says:

I never had that problem…because we kept all our keys on hooks out of reach of DD when she was little. Besides if she had set off the alarm as a kid it would have freaked her out big time…if she figured out she had done it, she would have never touched the key chain again…she hates loud noises (I’m waiting until she’s a teen! LOL this could be a good thing.)

DD has always been really good about not messing with stuff that isn’t hers. Although I allow her to play the games on my cell when the battery is low so she can wear it down all the way before I charge it.

  17. Deb - Mom of 3 Girls says:

Oh that’s too funny! Becca is the same way – she won’t have anything to do with toy phones, cell phones or keys, she wants the real thing! And it was a big ‘no’ on the dummy (battery removed) remote control we gave her to play with, she wanted the one with buttons that lit up… Sometimes they are too smart for their own good! :)

J loved the keys too! I just hate being the one with the annoying alarm blasting. Makes me feel so silly. Good for your neighbour setting the alarm off that night to alert you all about the jeep on fire.

Alex LOVES the cell phone and keys. He will hold the keys up in one hand and the phone. He likes to talk on the phone…it is very cute!

  22. Southern Girl says:

Goober’s pretty fond of remote controls, but his most favorite thing is a coaster…you know, the sort you set your glass on? Actually, his absolute favorite thing is the carport light. His high chair is right by the window where he can see it, and as soon as we put him in there, he turns to look for it. Of course, unlike with Baby Bug and your keys, we don’t ever have to worry about Goober taking off with the light. ;)

I’m a newcomer here and love your design.
My numbah 2 son thinks if it is in the house, it must be his to use, and to relocate to the toxic waste dump that is his room.
He told me when he was nine that he was never going to leave home.
Guess what? He is now 24.
I really miss being able to find my tools.

Cell phones, definitely. As the kids get older the phone holds more fascination for them. Lately they’re spelling words and playing Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.

  25. Sarah @ Real Life says:

We have the same problem with the phone. We did find an old flip phone that we had deactivated, and gave Pea that one. She plays with it for a while till she realizes it doesn’t beep. We’ve tried the old remotes with no batteries, but she isn’t fooled!

The guy’s Jeep was totally destroyed. My car was pretty burnt on one side. The sad thing was that I had just sold it a week earlier! I ended up donating it to the Kidney Foundation.

To this day, we still don’t know how that fire started.

KEYS, KEYS, KEYS!!! Luckly he is pretty happy playing with his plastic primary colored set, but will happily throw that set in order to grab mine. But I am scared that he will lose them…I work at a car dealership/service center, so I have been able to get some “adult” keys given to me that are cut for a customer and then don’t want for whatever reason!! So my honey has his very own set!! Mommy is SOOOO lucky :)
