7 Days And Counting

March 9, 2008

I can’t believe there are only 7 days until our Lake Tahoe trip.

All the preliminaries have been taken care of - stopping the mail, feeding the cats, buying the warm clothes, confirming and paying for all the arrangements . . . we even bought a brand new GPS system to help with our drive up to the cabin. I just wish I was as excited about our vacation as much as everyone else is.

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve never been in the snow and have no idea what to expect? Maybe it’s because I’d rather go to Disneyland? Or is it the dread of flying for 6 hours with a 2-year old who can’t sit still? The only peace of mind I have right now is that we purchased confirmed tickets and won’t have to worry about being bumped off the flight. Now that’s a real treat for us!

I’m sure that once we’re there, I won’t want to leave. A friend of mine just returned from Heavenly and she had a blast! She talked about all the beautiful chalets, scenery, and culture. And I definitely know the kids will have an experience like no other.

So this week will be spent shopping for books and toys to keep the kids occupied during the flight, packing all that bulky clothes, and making sure all the details are in order. Oh yeah, and driving around town trying to figure out that GPS system.

Any last minute advice?

when we flew with DD at that age on the long flights, the crew was okay with us walking around by the door of the plane (the one in the middle…I don’t know which kind of plane that was.) But I kept DD’s hands in mine and didn’t let her run.
Other than that…can you get her to sleep? ;)

we went there a year or so ago when meesh had her bowling tournament in reno. Totally loved it. We didn’t stay right by the lake, but instead nearby. We loved it there. I’ve got a few pictures in my flickr stream from it.

My only advice is that you take it easy and have a good time. There’s a bunch of things to do, but I would just take my time and enjoy it.

Have fun!

Yes! Don’t worry about it too much. It will all be fine once you get there. I always find the last minute preparations before a holiday stressful. It’s only once we get there that I finally relax and unwind - and then it’s time to come home again! Have a great time. Hope you’ll be writing about it on your blog.

Think positive! Everything will go well and you’ll all have a good time. Take warm clothes, gloves you can where off the slopes and beanies. Be sure a wear super cute beanies!
Wow! Confirmed seats? I wouldn’t know. I’ve only bought a ticket once, on another airline and it was a few days after a hurricane in florida. There wasn’t a stand-by seat to be had and I had to get to CA for Halloween.
What kind of a GPS system? We have Tom Tom’s for each of our cars. You gotta see “Darth Vader in the night”
Maybe there are fun voices your girl’s will like.
Big Smile!

Make sure the snow doesn’t get into your boots. Wet and cold feet are terrible in the winter.

HAVE FUN!! What a blast! My best advice is to pack half as much as you plan to pack;) We went to Europe for 15 days with kids ages 5 and 7 — and we only packed two Rick Steves backpacks.

Yeah, I’ve been called “crazy” before, but it seriously worked for us!

Have a wonderful time in the snow! Yes, do the layers; don’t overpack (which I do ALL the time). Whenever we take the kids on long flights we sometimes wrap the toys/books and take them out gradually as presents. Keeps them busy and and not so bored. When one toy loses its novelty, out comes the next!

Oh my goodness! How fun, Kailani! I hope you guys have a great time - it might be quite a culture shock considering you’re used to warm weather. But think fires, hot cocoa and snowmen!

Are you going to try and blog while you’re there? It would be fun to read about your adventures, but I can certainly understand if you’re taking a blog break, too. You certainly deserve one.

Advice: pack some chapstick, lotion and believe it or not, sunscreen. The sun reflects off the snow and actually give you a sunburn if you’re not careful. And the wind can dry your skin out, so make sure everyone is moisturized. And don’t forget the sunglasses, the sun and snow can be QUITE bright. Don’t forget thick mittens and extra socks for the girls! The warmer their hands and feet are, the longer they will be able to withstand the wet and cold.

You might also pack some tissues in your pockets for running noses.

I don’t know how cold it is over there right now, but long underwear is also a luxury, if you can spare the space.

As far as entertainment, you would know better than anyone what your girls like, but keep a surprise or two up your sleeve for when they start to get restless and bored. But look who I’m telling this to! lol

Have a wonderful time, GF. I can’t wait to hear all about your trip.

GPS is the way to future. I see in next 20 years or so , may be no vehicle in our countries will be without gps. However , cost is still a problem , specially in developing nations. But I am sure , with increase in demand the cost will come down. Nice blog.
