PopStar Guitar for Wii

Imagine having your own rock band playing tunes from The Jonas Brothers, Rhianna, Maroon 5, and even Hannah Montana. Well, XS Games has recently launched Pop Star Guitar for Wii and PlayStation 2 where you can do just that.

From the site: “PopStar Guitar is a music-based rhythm-action game for tweens and teens in which the player adopts the role of a lead guitarist forming a band, helping band-members to become start and eventually winning the “Battle of the bands” worldwide contest. The game takes the player through a journey of self-improvement and transformation. Throughout the game the player improves his or her skills to deliver better, more challenging and rewarding performances that in turn delivers success, money, independence and fame.”

We had the opportunity to review PopStar Guitar and had a lot of fun testing it out. I’m not a very seasoned Wii player so it was a little harder for me to figure out what was going on. However, once I got the hang of it I was jammin’ with the best of them. Having popular modern songs made it a lot more enjoyable and really kept the kids interest. Even when it wasn’t their turn to play, they were dancing around the living room and singing along.

PopStar Guitar comes with single & multiple player mode, 60 pop songs, 12 playable characters, 25 cool venues, VIP vehicles, 3 difficulty levels, and many different kinds of guitars and drum sets to choose from. You can even unlock videos of your band in Studio Mode.

The only thing I didn’t care for was the design of the buttons on the game sleeve that you place over the controller. Right between the “fret” buttons there are 2 tiny control buttons. If you’re not careful it is very easy to accidentally press these buttons and end your current jam session.

However, I really liked the “AirG” peripheral because it makes you feel like you’re playing an actual guitar without the guitar. Very convenient and easy to store. PopStar Guitar for Wii was a big hit with my family and I know they will enjoy playing it over and over again.
