Random Thoughts

December 23, 2006

  • Thank you for all my wonderful Christmas cards, family photos, and gifts. I especially liked the Colorado calendar and chocolate bar! A big Mahalo goes out to Mommy Needs a MaiTai, Almost Somewhat Positive, Debby’s Ramblings, Are We There Yet?, Queen of Cute Shoes, fefefomana, and The Dackle Princess. You guys are the best blogging friends a gal could ever have! Merry Christmas!
  • A while back Sam sent me a copy of a book called Flirting with Forty by Jane Porter. Now that I’m done, I’d like to pass it along. If you’re interested in it, please leave a note in comments and I’ll randomly choose someone on Christmas Day. Here’s the review from Publisher’s Weekly:

In Porter’s second dip into the chick lit pool (after The Frog Prince), Seattle single mom Jackie Laurens begins wondering how important happiness is: divorced with two kids and a thriving decorating business, she assumes she’s happy, but can’t help feeling like something’s missing. When her married friend, Anne, arranges for the two of them to indulge in a Hawaiian getaway in honor of Jackie’s 40th birthday, Jackie agrees. Anne backs out at the last second, but Jackie decides to suffer through the vacation solo. Hawaii is gorgeous, but the hotel pool deck groans under the weight of middle-aged men whose coarse chutzpah is only overshadowed by their flabby bellies. Just before she resigns herself to the depressing prospects, she meets Kai, a sexy, tan and much younger surfing instructor. Life doesn’t get better, only more complicated as Jackie tries to balance the sultry, sweaty joys of Hawaii and Kai with the obligations of motherhood. Porter’s romance roots show in the gratuitous sex scenes and in how easily tears flow from Jackie’s eyes, but this book fits the bill as a calorie-free accompaniment for a poolside daiquiri.

  • You won’t believe why a Mother had her 12 year old son arrested! Read about it at Two Moms in a Blog by clicking on that cute red thumbnail in the sidebar. Some people just shouldn’t have kids!

You’ll have a card from me too, I just finally sent them today! such a slacker I know.

I would be interested in having the book, thanks! Hope you guys have a very Merry Christmas.

Sounds like a good book.

I feel the same way… you encouraged me when I didn’t think my writing was all that great, I really appreciate it. Merry Christmas Local Girl, I hope you have a beautiful Christmas with your family!

On another note, I can’t believe that lady, that’s horrible. :( This is what I commented on their blog “That’s really awful. I agree, for whatever reason that child is acting like that… scaring the crap out of him and harming him emotionally isn’t going to help. I hope his problem isn’t that he doesn’t feel love and is looking for attention… somehow I think this isn’t quite what he was looking for.”

The thing that stuck out to me about that kid and his mom, was that she’s only 15 years older than he is. So likely, she hadn’t reached the same maturity level that those of us who had our kids later did. I agree that actually having him charged with something is extreme, but we also don’t know what this kid’s record of behaviour is and we may be judging her reaction based on how our own kids act. Poor kid for sure, because something sure isn’t right.

I can understand the Mom wanting to set an example for her son, but arresting him doesn’t exactly seem like the right thing to do. hopefully it works out for them.

I would love the book, it sounds like a fun story and set in Hawaii too!

Merry Christmas to you and your family!

saw the “arrest” story in the news, but the rest of the story was that there were other problems that had the mother frustrated - he was a kid in trouble all the time apparently.

reminds me of a poem my dad used to say
when I was a little boy about so high
mama took a little stick and made me cry
Now I’m a big boy and mama can’t do it
so daddy takes a big stick and he tends to it

Sounds like this gal gave the big stick to the guys in uniform.
