2006 Ornament Exchange

November 28, 2006

Look what came in the mail today!

It’s my Christmas ornament from Connie at Mumbo Jumbo! Girlie Girl was so excited at seeing the first signs of Christmas! Thank you to Stranded in the Mountains for organizing this wonderful event!

Now, if only we could decide on what to do about a tree.

When Girlie Girl was younger, we didn’t have a Christmas tree because we were afraid that she would eat it. You know how babies are - everything goes in the mouth. Now that we have Baby Bug, we’re up against the same problem. However, I don’t think it’s fair for GG not to have a tree.

We are considering getting an artificial tree. Does anyone out there have one? Do you like it? Does it look real?

Any other suggestions?

I can’t believe what you’ve done with the place. I got crazy and put a winter scene in and that was exhausting.

My kids never ate the Christmas Tree.

** Hmmm . . . maybe my kids are just weird.

*raises hand* We have an artificial, prelit tree. I like it, it looks real! I also have a tip! When the girls were babies, I built (okay hubby built) a short fence type thing, made from the posts that go on a picket fence. I shortened the posts, painted them red and white, and connected them with heavy wire so that I could arrange it around the tree. It worked great! And it looked cute :)

** Could you come to my house and build one for me? LOL!

Your new place looks so festive! We’ve used a pre-lit one,but I really love real ones, that Christmas tree smell! So I just bought some fragrance spray and spritzed the tree once a day!

My kids never ate the tree either, pulled alot of ornaments off,so that we had to put them higher!
I really like Sam’s idea about making a fence. Cute idea!

** I love Sam’s idea. I just wish someone could come over and build it for me! LOL!

I do so hope you like your ornaments. They are done by an artist named Jim Shore. They are collectables here and I have many of his figurines.

Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.

Take care,
Connie

** Yes, we love them! My daughter didn’t realize there was a Mrs. Claus! Thank you!

Love the new skin. YOu know what my parents did when I was a baby? They put a tree in the playpen! And me, the baby could look at it, and hold the side rails of the playpen, but not get at it!

** That is acutally a really good idea!

We always had live trees until the year we went to a Christmas tree farm and brought one home. The Hubster woke up the next morning with his eyes swollen shut! We bought an articifial one the next year.

I love our artificial tree because we can put it up so much earlier and not worry so much about it catching on fire. I have a free-standing baby gate (the kind that you can hook together to make a “pen” of sorts) that we put around the tree. My kids have outgrown messing with the tree, but the puppy and the little ones I watch sure haven’t!

**Ahhh . . . we have one of those gates! I knew you’d have the solution!

Wow, those are really pretty! I love your new blog, HOHOHO:D

I have an artificial tree, I like it. You do still get some “needles” on the floor, but not as bad as a real tree. I am having problems myself in the toddler/kitten department. Both don’t seem to want to leave it alone. This year we are going to decorate the tree with unbreakable ornaments and teddy bears. I have a huge Boyd’s Bears collection. I saw a friends tree once, when i was a kid where they decorated with teddy bears, white lights and ribbon and I have wanted to try it ever since.

Good luck with the tree thing… I had thought about buy a fence like contraption that Sam mentioned. It’s pretty much a hexagon connecting fence that makes a play area, but they can be pricey.

Here are two…

**That’s right! I forgot about your kitten! Mine used to climb the tree from the inside until he got to the top. The tree ended up falling over and spraying ornaments everywhere!

I grew up with real trees, and thought I would hate artificial. We bought an artificial tree 2 years ago and it’s great. No falling needles, no drying out. It is just 3 big pieces that fit together. The branches fold up like an umbrella, and it really does look real. Hubby even arranged the lights so they come apart where the tree does so no stranding the lights each year! I do miss the smell of a fresh tree, but the trade off isn’t too bad. We are going to have to put the nicer ornaments up a bit, though, to keep them out of baby’s reach!

**The no falling needles thing is what really sold me. My cats used to eat them off the floor and then cough them up all over the carpet. Not a pretty sight!

Hello! Like the new, new digs! No problem - I’ll Blogline you here;)

We used to have an artificial tree and it was fine. The expensive ones really do look real.

But now that the kids are older and we can go cut one down as a family, that’s our tradition.

Have fun!

That’s a great idea for a fence around the tree. We will have to try it this year.

I really cheatfor a Christmas tree and have a prelit tree as well. Mine has pine cones on it and people tell me they are hard pressed to tell that it isn’t real except that you can’t smell it. I love it and it looks beautiful. It pays for itself after a couple of years if you get one on sale. Just be careful when picking them out. You want to choose one that looks like one you would cut down as they come in all kinds of shapes and colors. I wouldn’t trade mine for the world. You don’t have to water it and smell it and clean up after it too much. And you know that it is ready for next year as well. Box to finished takes me only 1 hr and I look forward to it every year. I even converted my MIL from the real thing to a prelit a few years ago. Now she has more time to shop for presents she says. I like that part :)

Glad to see you doing well and staying active. Love ya!

**I was planning on sending DH to get one but after reading your comment, I think I better go and pick one out myself! I never know what he’ll bring home!

I have two! LOL We bought a new 9 foot one this week that is prelit. It’s awesome. ;o) The other one is 15 years old and still looks great.

We have a fake one and it’s awesome. I haven’t had an actual real tree for so long that it just doesn’t matter anymore! heheh

Glad I managed to find you once again (via Maribeth’s comments) YAY!

**One positive outcome from this whole mess is that I’m meeting new bloggers whom I didn’t even know were visiting me. It’s nice to meet you!

Due to allergies; we’ve had an artificial tree for numerous years. I haven’t spent too much on an artificial. I got a pre-lit one at Walmart for less than $30. The kids love it & I let them decorate it so even if it’s not perfect, they are happy. Look around, I’m sure you’ll find one you’ll like.

I’m glad to see that my idea was so popular. It didnt cost me that much to make because we had the stuff laying around, but I guess it might get a little pricey if you had to go buy everything.

We always use an artificial tree due to allergies. My mom always put our large one in the playpen. When our kids were little we bought a short one (about 4 foot) and put it on a table where little hands couldn’t reach. We still he the short one even thoguh the kids are bigger. We find we kind of like having room in our living room to move around the tree.

I’m so glad you’re all right, LG. I hate internet stalkers.

When our kids (and even my little sisters) were crawlers, we usually got a smaller tree and put it on a table. But an artificial tree has its advantages too. Best of luck no matter what you do.

When my daughter was a baby, and I was still married to her dad, we were too poor to have a tree. The first Christmas we spent with the person who would later become my 2nd husband and her adoptive dad: she was three, and having heard she’d never had her very own Christmas tree, went out and bought a huge live one complete with decorations so she could have a real one. It was GIANT in my tiny apartment. One of my best memories of Christmas and the spirit of giving.

Bleh I got so wrapped up in my little memory, I forgot to say, she never ate any of the trees or messed with it. However, I have a pre-lit one now, and the cats left it pretty much alone…until we were taking the decorations down…then OC climbed up in the inside of the tree…repeatedly.

**You’re lucky. Baby Bug will eat anything she can get her hands on . . . shoes, cat litter, dog food, etc. Gee, she acts like I don’t feed her!

I LOVE my artifical tree. No pines, no baby’s eating it, and no cat climbing in it. I just burn some pine candles (way up high and away from the tree) to sort of substitute the real tree smell.

This are adorable! Blessings!

We have only had an artificial tree, for over 15 years of marriage. This year we went with a natural tree, and we’ll go back to artificial next year. I’m keeping my eyes on the pre-lit ones and hope to snatch one when the go on sale.

** What made you decided to get the real one this year? Just curious since I had a hard time deciding what kind of tree to get.
