A Very Sad Day

I wasn’t planning on blogging today since I’m currently in San Diego on a layover. However, something terrible happened in Hawaii yesterday and I just can’t seem to shake this depressing feeling. I didn’t know the people involved, I wasn’t a witness to the tragedy. Yet, I can’t get it off my mind.

Here’s what happened:

At about 12 noon, HST, Cyrus Belt, 2, died of “multiple blunt force injuries due to a fall from a height”. He was thrown from a freeway overpass onto the highway by his babysitter. Two cars then ran over him. The babysitter looked over the walkway, watched the child die, then leisurely strolled away while smoking a cigarette.

Earlier in the day, Cyrus’s Mother asked the Grandfather to watch her son. When she returned home, the Grandfather took a nap not knowing that she had left the apartment again. When he awoke, the child was gone. Apparently, Cyrus wandered off and ended up at his babysitter’s apartment directly upstairs. What happened after that is not yet known.

Witnesses say they saw the babysitter throw something off the overpass into oncoming traffic but thought it was a doll. When they realized it was a child, they went after him and restrained him until the police arrived. The babysitter is being held for psychiatric evaluation.

Authorities now say that when Cyrus was a year old, he was taken by Child Protective Services because they felt the Mother was not adequately caring for her son. He was later returned to her.

I know that terrible things happen every day, yet this has really hit me hard and I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because he’s the same age as Baby Bug. Maybe it was the way he died. Maybe it’s because they showed the police breaking the news to the Mother on television. What I do know is that Cyrus is now in a better place and I have to keep reminding myself of this. Still, no one should have to go through something like this – especially an innocent child.

Oh my… this is very sad indeed. I will never understand how someone could do something like this. Never.

That’s so horrible. Something similar happened in our town last week and i just can’t imagine.
A man left his 3 year old son at home alone for 24 hours while he went to work a 12 hour shift, got pulled over on his way home for driving drunk, went to jail, his boss bailed him out, and then he spent the night at his boss’ house never once telling anyone that his toddler son was home alone. The little boy was found the next day about a mile from his house walking along the side of the road in his pajamas with a blanket (it’s below freezing around here even during the day). It just tears me up to think that a parent could do that to their child.

I feel the same – when I read this yesterday I felt sick. My son is 22 mths old and is the light of my life, he is so much fun, an absolute joy. The thought of something like that happening to him makes my blood turn to ice. I can’t even begin to imagine how messed up you have to be to do something like this.

I saw that and it made me ill.
Then there was a second article, a woman in Massachusetts picked up her 3 and 4 year old niece and nephew. Took off her clothes and their clothes and walked onto an interstate highway. All dead.

Evil … horrible… what is happening in this world.

  6. Jennifer says:

    Kailani,

I heard about this on the news yesterday & was so troubled by it, too. Hug Baby Bug extra hard when you get back to Hawaii. I will certainly hug my precious nephew harder the next time I see him. Rest in Peace sweet Cyrus!!

Despite the mother’s past, I can’t imagine that she isn’t deeply troubled and saddened by this. What a tragic thing to have happened.

I hope that poor child is at peace.

I have never heard of something like this. I can’t imagine someone doing that to Alex, he is that age as well. Keep us posted on what happens as I haven’t heard anything on the news.

I also don’t think this is the time for them to be broadcasting the mom’s past. I know that baby is in a better place where he will feel no pain or neglect. May he rest in peace.

It is so hard when people do things like that. Like when the mom drowned all her children. Part of me wanted her to get the chair, and part of me felt so bad for her. A mother has got to be going through something unbelieveable to be able to do that to her children. And to have to live with that forever after you are better mentally would be more than torture.

But the babysitter? What could have happened for that?

There is also no reason for a TV station to broadcast the coverage of the police breaking the news to mom. NO reason at all. That’s uncalled for and disgusts me.

Kailani, how horrible! I can’t believe that, after hearing of a couple of other such incidents in the news recently. What is this world coming to? It just sickens me, children, babies, so dependent on adults and innocent. The babysitter obviously not in his right mind; the grandfather and mother must be just devastated beyond belief.
I’m giving my kids an extra hug today.

  37. Kim says:

I had the same reaction with the Baby Grace child that they found off the shore in Galveston late last year who was the same age as M. I think that does have a lot to do with it. Also, the confusion of how anyone could do something like that to a child. It’s heartbreaking.

  38. Lisa in CA says:

I hadn’t heard of this before reading your post. I rarely watch the news anymore. What are people thinking?!?!! This is sickening. Is life so worthless to some that they can commit attrocities like this? Life is THE most precious gift. There isn’t a punishment terrible enough for the person who hurts another person…especially a child.

  39. That is awful! I am sure that God spared that child the pain of such a terrible event. There are no words that can convey the upset over such an event, we can only pray for all involved.

  41. Egypt says:

30 years ago our governments decided to not have mental institutions anymore, to have more money to spend.

This is the price we pay. Obviously, this babysitter is mentally/emotionally ill. 30 years ago, this would have been determined and the person put where they belong so they would not present a threat to society.

Now, instead, the burden is placed on family, friends & yes, neighbors to deal with the sickos in our society. The ill person commits a crime, then goes to jail — our new way of dealing with the mentally ill.

Believe me, for anyone to even ~think~ of doing this to a darling two-year-old child is sick. It is called mental illness. It is not a normal person who simply is bad. This is how it is presented to society today — oh, bad person, how could they? Indeed.

I remember when Governor Reagan “closed” the mental institutions in CA. The very next day it was noticed that there were all these strange people standing on the street corners.

We later learned they were being called “homeless people.” We did not figure it out for a couple of days, but then we knew just exactly who these homeless were…One only had to speak with them to know.

I got chills just picturing that horror scene unfolds. This reminds me of another case in Alabama recently where a Vietnamese father threw his 4 children (3 of his and 1 stepchild) over a bridge b/c he had a prior argument with his wife. This hit me hard when I heard it, since we’re both Vietnamese and boat people and I have 4 kids too but man, I’d love for him to be deported back to VN and somebody does some hurting on him!
