Veggie Tales have always been one of our favorite DVD series. I really like how they incorporate some very important lessons with music, fun, and laughter. Our family has seen many Veggie Tales DVD over the years but The Penniless Princess has got to be one of our favorites.
Sweet Sara Crewe has everything a little girl could want – a loving family, lots of friends and a closet full of frilly dresses! But when life takes a turn and Sara goes from riches to rags, will she realize that her true worth lies not in what she has, but what’s in her heart? Find out in this inspiring new story from VeggieTales, based on the beloved classic story of “A Little Princess” that reminds kids who they are in God’s eyes by Frances Hodgson Burnett, that has countless movie and book adaptations.

When we first started watching the movie I realized that I had seen the Shirley Temple version when I was a child. It was my absolute favorite movie while growing up so be able to see the Veggie Tale version was so cool.
Sara’s father is off to work in the diamond mines so he has to send his daughter Sara to boarding school. Because of their wealth, the Head Mistress treats Sara like a princess until one day when word comes that Sara’s father had died. All of her possessions are sold to pay for her stay and she’s forced to work for room and board. However, this doesn’t get Sara down. She still believes that every girl is a princess inside no matter what they look like on the outside.
I really liked that Sara was such a sweet and unspoiled girl even though she had everything a child could want. She made friends easily, was nice to people who weren’t nice to her, and showed so much compassion. All traits that I feel are important to my girls.
And of course, there was the intermission song which was absolutely hilarious! I couldn’t keep up with the lyrics but it was so much fun to watch. Basically, there are two friends sitting in the same room texting messages to each other using all those confusing shortcuts. You have to watch it.
So if you have a little girl in your life you definitely have to see Veggie Tales The Penniless Princess. It’s a great movie for kids . . . and adults alike.
