Ever since I first watched The Sound of Music on DVD a few years ago, it has become a favorite.  I love the story of the von Trapp family, and I especially love the songs.  Sony Music recently released The Sound of Music: 50th Anniversary Edition  (ARV $11.49) to celebrate The Sound of Music’s first opening on Broadway 50 years ago!  Simon & Schuster’s book The Sound of Music: A Classic Collectible Pop-Up has also been released to celebrate this special anniversary!

On November 16, 1959, The Sound of Music– the last musical collaboration of composer Richard Rodgers and lyricist Oscar Hammerstein II – made history when it opened at Broadway’s Lunt-FontanneTheater. Masterworks Broadway celebrates that milestone with a special 50th anniversary edition of the musical’s beloved original cast recording, starring Broadway legend Mary Martin…To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Broadway premiere of The Sound of Music, Masterworks Broadway has restored the original cast recording in a new edition that features three unusual bonus tracks, extensive liner notes about the show’s history by Bert Fink of the Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization, and rarely seen photos of the recording sessions, held November 22, 1959, in Columbia Records’ celebrated 30th Street Studios…The release of the recording comes just as Simon & Schusteradds to The Sound of Music phenomenon with a collectible pop-up book for every family’s library.

The Sound of Music: A Classic Collectible Pop-Up adapted by Bert Fink; Illustrated by Dan Andreasen; 9781416936558Paper Engineering by Bruce Foster  (ARV $26.99, Little Simon):  The beloved tale of Maria and the von Trapp family comes to life in this spectacular pop-up format! From the peaceful abbey to the breathtaking Austrian Alps, this masterpiece is sure to enchant young and old readers alike. The stunning keepsake also includes mini-pops on each page featuring classic song lyrics from The Sound of Music, making this the perfect addition to any family’s library.

Listening to the Sound of Music: 50th Anniversary Edition was such a pleasure!  My favorite songs included Maria, My Favorite Things, Do-Re-Mi, and Edelweiss.  It was really neat to hear the original cast recording, and it was a perfect complement to the pop-up book!

The Sound of Music pop-up book was quite beautiful, and the scenes of Nonnberg Abbey and the von Trapp home were amazing.  There were “mini-pops” on each page which told more of the story, and also featured song lyrics and more pop-up images! I thought it was a bit difficult at times to take out the mini-pops, and I’d pull them out very slowly not wanting to break anything.

However, we love the book!  Little Music Man loves to look at the neat pop-ups, and our favorite song to sing from The Sound of Music soundtrack is Do-Re-Mi!

After listening to the 50th Anniversary Edition soundtrack and reading the pop-up book, I really want to see The Sound of Music live.

Until then I’ll be happy to watch the movie on DVD while singing along…

“Maria” is my favorite track. My daughter was a nun in a production of the Sound of Music last year, and that was her big number, so it is my favorite.
