Lights, Camera, Charged Batteries! Energizer Asks How Kids Take Charge Via Online Video Submissions, Offers $10,000 In Donations

I don’t know about your family but we go through tons of batteries. Up until now, we would stock up every time we make a Costo run because we all know how batteries tend to lose their power at the worst possible moment. Thanks to Energizer, there’s a simple solution available.

bunny1Energizer is introducing the new Energizer® Recharge Smart Charger by getting consumers involved in a video campaign to drive donations to their favorite charity. The “Kids Take Charge” video campaign asks families across the country to post a video of their child explaining the mischief they can get into when the toys that keep them occupied run out of battery power. The top ten creative entries will receive a portion of the $10,000 donation – based on an online poll – for their charity. Parents can get inspiration from the online ad campaign, also launching today and viewable at www.Energizer.com/SmartCharge, which features kids talking about everything from having tantrums to telling family secrets, each closing with a “Try the Smart Charger….or Else” message.

“We’re letting people know about the new Energizer® Recharge Smart Charger and how it can make their lives easier by demonstrating its benefits in real-life situations they can relate to….and through the people that know best how to get them to listen: their kids!,” said Jim Olsen, Vice President of Marketing for North America. “We’re eager to view how America’s youth flex their creative muscles and show off the power of persuasion for a good cause.”

bunny chargerThe first 250 people to enter a video will receive a free Energizer® Recharge Smart Charger. Energizer will select ten finalists based on originality, humor and alignment with the, “Kids Take Charge or Else” theme. Consumers can help determine the amount of money each charity receives by voting for their favorite at www.Energizer.com/SmartCharge.  The funds will be allocated based on the percentage of views that each video receives. To enter, visit www.Energizer.com/Smartcharge to review rules and submit a link to an online video posting with the hashtag #SmartCharge before May 17, 2010.

The Energizer® Recharge Smart Charger was developed in response to consumer interest in understanding more about the charging status of their batteries, so they’ll know if they will last for as long as needed. Energizer developed a charger that delivers on consumer demand by communicating information about rechargeable batteries and the charging process in three ways:

  • A countdown clock with large LCD numbers displays how much charging time remains
  • A fuel gauge communicates the current level of power in the batteries
  • A bad-battery detector alerts users if the batteries are no longer useful or if they’ve inserted a disposable battery by mistake

“There is nothing more disappointing than a toy or camera running out of battery power right at a critical moment. Knowing more about the charging process can help people avoid this. It is very empowering,” said Olsen, Brand Manager, Energizer Charger and Rechargable Systems. “Think of it like a car’s fuel gauge: you don’t always need a full tank to drive the car, and you can make a decision about how far to travel and when to get a refill because you know how much gas is in the tank.”

The Energizer® Recharge Smart Charger also features a slow charge rate, which extends the number of life cycles, charges 2 or 4 AA or AAA NiMH rechargeable batteries, and is ENERGY STAR®-certified. It will be available this spring at national retailers for an MSRP of $19.99.

Energizer’s latest innovation in battery chargers comes right on the heels of new and improved Energizer® Recharge NiMH AA batteries. These 2300 mAh batteries can now be charged up to 250 MORE** times, and will last up to 4X longer* in digital cameras.

*vs Energizer® MAX® AA, results vary by device and usage patterns.

**vs Energizer® 2450 mAh Rechargeable AA battery.

WIN IT!

Energizer has generously donated a Recharge Smart Charger for one lucky person! To enter:

  • Just stop by Energizer site before midnight, May 1st.
  • Then come back and mention in comment one interesting thing you learned. That’s it!
  • A random winner will be selected and notified via email shortly thereafter.
  • The winner will then have 2 days to claim their prize.

To earn extra entries, you may do one or all of the following. Each one counts as an extra ticket but you must leave a separate comment for each one.

This giveaway is open to US addresses. Good luck!

I found the battery history very interesting. Especially this snippet: some archeological finds seem to point to batteries being used as far back as 2,000 years! In 1938 Wilhelm Konig discovered a 5 inch pottery jar containing a copper cylinder encasing an iron rod that he believed to be one of the first batteries. I love history!

    Thank you. :-)

A flashlight is powered by batteries—they create an electrical current that flows through metal contacts and brings electricity to the lamp (light bulb) in the flashlight. A thin wire in the light bulb contains the element “tungsten”, which glows when in contact with electricity, producing a visible light. This light reflects off the reflector resting around the light bulb

Should chargers be removed from household AC power when charging is complete?
We recommend that the chargers be unplugged from the wall outlet and the batteries be removed after the charging sequence is complete unless the charger has an on/off switch. This allows the charger to reset prior to the next usage.
