For every woman diagnosed with breast cancer, there is a husband, son, father, brother or friend that is impacted too. While resources for women are seemingly everywhere (support groups, books, websites, etc), very few resources exist to help the men in their lives. This is the MUST-READ book for those men.
When my mom was first diagnosed 4 years ago, we had to learn alot really quick……medical terminology, treatment options, statistics, even safety precautions. It was overwhelming…..and everything moved fast. Surgery….then another surgery…….chemo. While we obviously focused on mom, it was clear the toll it took on my father. Men like to fix things. You can’t exactly FIX a cancer diagnosis.
I wish Stand By Her – A Breast Cancer Guide for Men, had been there for him.
John W. Anderson, an attorney and Emmy-nominated director, writer, and producer, authors this new release after watching the women in his life being diagnosed with breast cancer, one at a time……. mom, wife, sister, and dear friend. His personal story makes it clear that he has been there, in the trenches with the women he loves, more than once.
The book is practical and insightful. A tangible something for men to reach for when all else seems beyond their control. It talks very clearly about what you can expect from diagnosis to treatment and beyond, including:
- An Understanding of Breast Cancer
- Assembling an army of medical professionals
- Creating a corp of family and friends who are supportive
- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
- Radiation
- Loss of hair, appetite, attention span and sex drive
- Maintaining a sense of normalcy
- What to expect after treatment….will cancer return? has the marriage changed?
- Perspectives and actions for a husband, son, father, brother and friend
Sometimes men don’t know where to turn, especially when they are facing the fear of losing someone they love. Stand By Her – A Breast Cancer Guide for Men gives them somewhere to turn, someone answering questions they might fear asking, and the reassurance that most women win this war (although the battle is incredibly fierce).
In addition to the book, you’ll find an amazing resource in standbyher.org, which houses articles on every topic imaginable. There’s a forum too for men to talk openly about what’s going on. After visiting the forum myself, I have no doubt that this will help men all around the world…..a support system.
If you know someone, a man, who has a loved one battling breast cancer, recommend Stand by Her: A Breast Cancer Guide for Men, or even better, deliver the book yourself!

Thanks for the great contest. I am presently battling breast cancer. I have had chemo and will have surgery soon followed by 6 weeks of radiation. This book would be great for my boyfriend. He sees the negative instead of the positive (which isn’t good for me) and it would be great for him to get a better understanding of what all of this means!
I have a friend who has been diagnosed.
