The Impossible True Story About A Legendary Sports Champion & Its Owner Releases As A Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD & Movie Download on January 25, 2011
What inspires you?
This past Summer I had the opportunity to attend not one but two advanced screenings of this amazing movie . . . one in NYC and one in Hawaii. And even though I had already seen it twice before, I actually paid to see it a third time when it came out in the theaters. Yes, that’s how good this movie is.
Secretariat is a movie about a big red horse who in 1973 defied the odds to become the first horse in 25 years to win the U.S. Triple Crown. In doing so, he also set new race records in two of the three events which still stand today.
Penny Tweedy Chenery (Diane Lane), owner or Secretariat, lived in a time where women were expected to be housewives and mothers and not much else. She followed her dream and did not back down even when the world was against her. She was truly a pioneer of her time and did not live her life by the standards set by others. She took a horse that no one wanted and with the help of her trainer Lucien Laurin (John Malkovich), rider Ronnie Turcotte (Otto Thorwarth), handler Nelsan Ellis (Eddie Sweat), and long-time friend Miss Ham (Margo Martindale), they raised a true champion. They did it with compassion, understanding and love.
There were so many dimensions to this movie that I found myself crying, laughing, sympathizing, cheering, and of course, being inspired. Inspired by the thought that with hard work and the support of the people around you, you can do anything. And if you do not make it to the finish line it’s okay because it’s better to have tried and lost than to have never tried at all.
As a full-time working mother, I really felt for Penny throughout the movie. There were so many times she wanted to be at home with her family and share in their childhood experiences but occasionally circumstances prevented her from doing so. Yet despite all this she was always with them in her thoughts and showed her love by supporting them in their choices even if she didn’t necessarily agree.
The funny thing is that since this is a true story, I knew how it was going to end. However, that didn’t stop me from holding my breath during the last race and sitting at the edge of my seat just waiting for Secretariat to cross the finish line. And when he did, I want to jump up and cheer! That just goes to show you what a great movie this is from the acting to the writing to the directing and cinematography.
