Safe Holiday Cooking Tips ($100 Best Buy Giveaway)

With Christmas just about here and New Year’s right around the corner, you’re probably already cooking up a storm. After all, what’s the holidays without great food? There are certain recipes that make the holidays special. Many are passed down for generations and have become an indispensable part of the tradition. Mine is my famous Chocolate Trifle. What are yours?
Although cooking with the family is a fun holiday tradition, remember to be safe. Little hands are quick and unattended cooking is the number one cause of kitchen fires. Here are some tips to help you stay cooking safe:
- Keep things clean – Keeping a clean work area ensures that accidents don’t happen from clutter. Don’t underestimate how important it is to have room to move around safely. Clean hands and food contact surfaces are also important.
- Watch what’s going on – Keeping an eye on cooking is by far the easiest, least expensive and most effective way to protect your home. It’s easy to get distracted during the busy holidays, so be sure to stay aware of where your children are and what they are doing.
- Unplug appliances – Unplug any kitchen electrics or appliances when not in use. Accidental starts can be extremely dangerous and shocks may ensue if an appliance gets wet.
- Check cords – Look for signs of wear or damage to all cords as this could lead to shock or fire. Remember to remove the plug by reaching up and pulling it out of the socket rather than yanking on the cord.
- Separate foods- When cooking, be sure to avoid cross contamination between raw meat, poultry and seafood. Consider labeling cutting boards for each use and be sure to keep juices away from ready-to-eat foods.

It wouldn’t be Christmas if I didn’t make the pumpernickel bread bowl with spinach dip.
The one thing I make absolutely every year is cutout butter cookies. Nothing to go wild over, but it’s family tradition

I’m famous for Grandma’s Zucchini/Pineapple Bread. If every family didn’t get a loaf or two for Christmas I’d be in big trouble! My Gram started making it for everyone 40 years ago and when she passed I picked up the tradition. Adding pineapple to zucchini bread makes a really moist and flavorful bread. My hubby begs for my Pecan Pie. It’s not your ordinary pecan pie…it’s a super old recipe from my Grandmother that is made from scratch. It’s drowning in butter and sugar. I tasted a store bought pecan pie at my mother-in-laws yesterday and it was just plain yucky in comparison.

I make fudge, sugar cookie bars, oatmeal raisin bars, mini banana breads that people request each year. For the meals I make lasagna. I try to make 2 new dishes every year which always seem to be a hit. This year it was a new shrimp dip and a cheese, cracker and bacon appetizer.

Hmmm, I don’t think I am really famous for one particular thing, more of just cooking an entire meal. I always try to include a mix of favorite classics and some new things for each holiday meal I make and this seems to appeal to everyone!

We have a recipe handed down from my husband’s father who was a baker. You get one ham whole or half and wrap that ham in bread dough and bake . The ham is moist and delicious.Everyone who has had some of the ham say that it is the best ham they have ever eaten.

I’m famous for the snack mix I make during the holidays. It’s a lot like Chex Mix, but actually an older recipe called “Nuts and Bolts.” People ask me to make it all the time, but since the ingredients are pricy and it takes time to make, I usually only make it during the holidays.

Everyone seems to love my sweet potato casserole. Here are the secrets — 1) use fresh potatoes baked in the oven, instead of those syrupy ones from the can and 2) mini marshamallows!!

Everyone seems to like my slow cooker turkey breast. I made it for Thanksgiving, and have been asked to make it again for New Years. Grinch Bars. Its like a rice krispie treat but with corn flakes and I make them green. ALL my neighbors get a goodie bag and I also make them for all of my kids school Christmas parties. Some people shy away from them at first because they are Christmas green, but once they try them, they love them.

I make Spanikopita. It’s my take on a greek appitizer. We don’t groove on Feta cheese so I substitute swiss and smoked gouda. everyone asks me to make them for every holiday party

Wow.. I cook all the time but when the holidays come around I think I go bananas trying new things and cooking all the decadent stuff I try to avoid through the rest of the year. The one thing that the kids are asking me for almost everyday..I say no..most days.. lol.. is my very decadent Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa.. it is made with extra cream, milk chocolate chips and real vanilla bean and of course the one thing they insist on, Reddi Whip with dark chocolate shavings.. I know..
it is the ultimate Cocoa.. So this year.. this is my holiday specialty.. next year who knows..maybe I will re-invent my fudge recipes…

I have a few things, but when I go to parties, I’m always asked to bring my baked brie with apricot preserves and toasted almonds, or my spanikopita. Those take a lot of time, so I prefer to do the brie. Thanks for the great giveaway.
