Kids Helping Kids in Zebrafish (Giveaway)
These days it’s hard to find a book that is not only interesting for kids to read but also shares a more important message – it’s cool to help others out. We found both of these in Zebrafish by Sharon Emerson.
Several friends, led by the purple-haired Vita, try to figure out how to make their band work despite the fact that no one knows how to play anything. But when Vita, whose older brother is a cancer researcher, learns that band-member Tanya has leukemia, she begins to wonder how their upcoming performance might be put to a greater good.
OUR REVIEW
In Zebrafish, Vita wants to start her own rockband and holds try-outs for other band members. Unfortunately, the only people who audition are kids who do not play any music. She tries to get rid of them but soon learns that these kids are a lot more determined than she realizes and ends up joining them. Together they learn that sometimes support and friendships are a lot more important than you realize and that the help you receive from your true friends could make all the difference.
Zebrafish is aimed for 5th – 8th graders but Kacie who is just entering the 3rd grade really enjoyed reading this book. She liked the comic book style layout which made it quick and easy to read. The sharp illustrations of the characters and surrondings helped to make them interesting and Kacie found herself getting really involved in their lives. The contrast of colors were also apealing to the eyes and really hold your attenting. Even I was drawn to take a peek.
However, the best part is that a portion of every book sale goes to help Generation Cures and Children’s Hospital Boston. I really like knowing that this book is dedicating to kids helping other kids in need. Definitely a great message to share with your family.

If I won, I’d give this book to a family I know who is always so generous– they have two middle school aged kids–just a small token of appreciation.
