Keep Your Home Office Safe ($200 Best Buy Giveaway)

This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to commentor #860: Karen!
Ever since I’ve started blogging seriously, I felt like I should have my own little office set-up. Unfortunately, space in my home is limited so I have to make due with the area I have. My only problem is that I feel like I just have too many things laying around and I worry about my kids getting into them. However, thanks to Underwriters Laboratories, I now have a little checklist to make sure my “office” is safe for everyone.
From Underwriters Laboratories:
- Mom’s home office is rarely just mom’s home office. There’s often a bunch of electronics, a computer, probably some kids things, and even a few of dad’s papers and files mixed in. To keep working safely, consider these tips:
- Watch your wattage – Don’t overload extension cords or plugs. Check the wattage on each component you plug in and avoid using adaptors to “make it work.”
- Get unplugged – Unplug electronics when not in use. Not only do they draw unnecessary energy, but they can also pose a hazard if turned on accidentally. Think paper shredders, fax machines, and space heaters or fans.
- De-clutter – A clean office is a safe office. Piles of papers are potential tripping hazards if on the floor and potential fire hazards if near a heat source.
- Steer the heater clear – Keep space heaters at least three feet away from any combustible materials and do not place anything on top of a space heater.
- Childproof it twice – Cords and electronics can be incredibly tempting and incredibly dangerous to small children. Be sure to manage your cords, keep outlets and surge protectors covered, and make sure that no small items such as paper clips and staples are within a child’s reach. Large furniture such as bookcases should also be firmly attached to the wall to prevent tipping.
By following this tips, you’ll help your home and family stay safe from harm.
WIN IT!

Very recently, I got around to securing the office to be more earthquake safe. I strapped the heavy bookcase to the wall, added sticky-putty to the underside of decorative items I don’t want lost in a quake, ans better hooks behind the heavy framed pictures in the room.
I went through and took all of the tangled, long cords that were dangling and sometimes caused us to trip, and secured them. I cleared off the top shelf of my computer desk that had framed photos that would keeep sliding off onto the keyboard.

Ugh. Our home office could be a LOT safer. Seriously cords strung all over because my husband is a fix it later kinda guy, and I wander the house with my laptop. The ONE thing we do do is make sure that we’re not over loading an outlet, and have really good power strips with surge protectors.
Other than that? good thing we don’t have toddlers or babies in the house!!

Sometimes I feel like my home office is anything but mine. Husband on his days off, and of course the kids. When they need the office computers for multi-player games with their friends, Mommy is relegated to the laptop at her bedroom. Sigh.

main entry: Well, my comupter is all set up in my sewing room because I use both all connected to use my computer designs for my seamstress work I do and I have 3 differant kind of sewing machines I use the main one is connected to my computer then theres my postal scales and other electronic supplies like me shredder so theres lots of outlet cords to be concerned about and to keep it safer my husband put the 8 outlet plug box way upon to the wall so it can be seen easier and away from little hands or too trip over and it has a turn on & off button to each plug in place I never saw anything like it before, he is very technical and wanted it to be safe in here for no overloads so even though all 8 cords can be plugged in at once I can turn off each one by button switch as I choose to lessen using electricity when each item is not being used it also has one main turn off switch to it so during a storm etc I turn the whole thing off. Being on the wall its unpleasant looking to the eye to see but its safer so thats what matters. great giveaway thanks, I would love to get more goodies for my office computer corner part of my work room.

The best way I keep my home office safe is my keeping watch on cord-chewing cats! The cats know that form some inexplicable reason, we go crazy when they start gnawing in an electrical cord, so they act as if they are going to do it, from time to time. It’s a full-time job to monitor the location of all three cats in our home office!

I bought an excellent product called the CableBox by Blue Lounge. It’s exactly that- a box that you tuck your powerstrip into, with all your cords plugged in. I imagine particularly intrepid kiddos could figure out how to open it up and get your stuff unplugged but it’s great for keeping babies from doing it and it also keeps everything looking more streamlined.

Right now I am thinking my home office area is hopeless. Not sure where to begin or what to do. I’m sure 80% of this paperwork needs to be thrown out, but I am never sure of what I need to hold onto. Not enough outlets for it to be safe, and It’s all mixed in with craft items that currently have no place to go. I know I need to organize and keep it cleaned up. Ahhhh.

I keep my home office area safe in a few ways.
Computer: My computer is used by my children. So I keep my area in an open space in the house so I can always monitor what they are doing.
Space: I am just beginning to work on de-cluttering my office area and creating a filing system for our important papers. I keep a file cabinet to keep important papers safe from the prying hands of my children. From reading above, our space heater is a little too close to the items around it, so I will be reorganizing to change that around. Anything that I consider dangerous for my girls, scissors, etc. are locked in my desk drawer where they cannot access it.

We keep all the cords bundled and out of the way, drawers are locked or at least child proof locked so the kids don’t dump everything out or pull the drawers out on top of themselves and we have the cabinets secured to the wall in case our youngest decides to climb!

Even though the computer is plugged into a power strip, any time we have a thunder storm, I unplug it from the outlet. My mother-in-law’s house got hit with lightning, and it fried her computer. She lost everything on it. Thanks for the great tips and giveaway!

One thing I do to keep my office space safe is to never burn candles in that area. It’s easy to light a candle and then forget about it or get distracted with work and have a sticky note or something blow across it and start a fire. We burn candles in our kitchen or bath area only.

Our cords are ziptied together as well as being hidden behind a big desk to where they are plugged in. We should definitely secure the bookcases to the wall; that’s something we haven’t done.
To keep my office safe I put baby proof plug covers over all open outlets and powerstrips.

Well, seeing as I really don’t have a blogging office, I guess what I do to keep my space safe for myself and others is to just keep it organized and out of people’s ways so there is no danger of tripping and or falling.
Thank you for this giveaway!!
Since my office is in my kitchen, I don’t have very much room, so I try to file the paperwork right away in the file cabinets right next to my built-in desk so the paper doesn’t pile up and cause a hazard. I also had the builder “go up” and put a cabinet above the desk so I could keep the extra office supplies right at hand. Thank you for the chance to win this amazing giveaway – I LOVE Best Buy!

We always make sure the cords are securely tucked away and the area is kept free of clutter. I also dust the cords every season – they can get pretty dusty if you dont.
I have a bunch of boxes piled around my desk, so that kind of blocks off most of the dangerous cables, etc. Will have to rethink the strategy when kids come along someday.
Those plastic socket guards are another good way to add safety, at least until the kids get big enough/smart enough to pull them out. Guess they could become a choking hazard at that point…

Uh…wow I don’t think I follow any of those tips!!! Not enough room for most of those. Since there are so many things plugged into our outlets here, everytime we leave town for any trip, overnight or longer, I unplug everything from the outlets in the office. Makes me feel much safer since we have cats who like to wander around all over the place.
Everything is neatly tucked under the desk and corded together – out of sight – out of mind.
i lock the door. keeps the menehunes out. and the keikis too.

I always log off when not using the computer, so a password is needed to operate the computer.
I keep a clean area around my wood stove, which is in my home office. Paranoid about starting an accidental fire with all the papers I have

I keep all the wires tied up and out of the way.
I keep my home office area safe by running off a back up home server all my files, and I have all the cords plugged into a wattage regulator (may not be proper term for this) so that if there is any spikes in the electric it will not affect my computer. Also it keeps all the cords away from my children so they don’t get into them and get hurt

I don’t have an actual office area. Our computer is in the corner of our bedroom on a corner computer work station. It’s kept neat, clean, and organized.
We hide all of our cords so our son can’t reach them.

Cords are stored behind the desk, everything is turned off when not in use, and so far, closing the door can keep the grandson out. That will change though as he gets a little older!
I vacuum regularly to keep all the hair/fuzz/etc away from all the electrical cords I have plugged in. Thanks for the contest!
I don’t Blog!
That’s how my area strays clean and safe!
Blogging is for people that don’t have a real life!
Keep the door closed -
We use zip cords on ALL of our cords to keep them untangled and safe! We also clean up ALL papers at the end of the day when we shut down the computer
I keep everything well hidden in drawers and use cord keepers to keep the cords from tripping people (especially me!).
I use the best internet security software and I change my password every month.
I keep the area around my computer well dusted. Computers seem to be dust magnets. Dust is highly combustible and can even be explosive.
I have a computer armoire so all the cords are behind and everything inside can be closed off and shut away from the kids (age 2 and 4 and very curious)

So far I have 7 grandchildren and it hasn’t been too difficult to keep my area safe. First, I train any grandchildren coming to my house to stay out of my room, which is where my desk is. Second, I keep a close eye on them just in case they can’t resist the no nos. Third, I close the door when the youngest ones start getting around the house until I have them trained.
I have secured all the cords to the one thing, so there is no way you can trip on them now

when we rebuilt our home-we did extra outlets and wireless systems throughout the house
I have a UPS for my system and I do regular back ups.
Now have a UPS surge protector that all computer stuff is plugged into on the desktop so the kids can’t mess with them as easily.
We have locks on all the draws, to keep the kids out, and actually… a lock on the door! No kids in the office…sorry, they would take something real quick and hide it on us.
We keep the cords out of reach of the kids and teach them not to touch anything near the computer.
We had an electrician come and add more plugins and check the wiring. We live in an early 1900’s house, so knew that the additional wattage required could cause problems. He gave it a going-over and now we feel better about safety.
We use a back-UPS device on all the electronics in our home office to protect against surges. Also, we have tamed our power cords, mostly with twisty-ties and keeping them out of reach. I am obsessed with dusting and vacuuming the office to keep dust down.

I could really use some more zip cords and some creative ways to connect all the gadgets in my home office. The area I have is very small and the built in desk area I use is antiquated and doesn’t have any way to connect anything from behind so everything has to wrap around the front.. it does cause some havoc at times.. no very little ones to worry about though just large kids with big feet.. LOL We have lost a couple of headsets to over sized feet and one guitar cord to a teething puppy. This prize would go a long way to help me get creative and more safety conscious..
I do have power surge protectors and keep everything neat and organized to avoid any unneccessary risks. I don’t overload my outlets and keep thiings unplugged when not in use.

I have been organizing all the cords and storing away anything not being used. I have cleared the floor under my tables so as not to keep knocking into stuff with my legs and also to know what it is I have and put that all away properly. I had my brother, who is a carpenter, make me a cover for all of my cords. It just keeps my little ones hands away from all of those colorful wires and cords! I also have external coolers on my laptop and my printer. That way they stay nice and cool!

I could probably be a lot safer with some of these suggestions! I’m not great about the clutter on my desk and shelves.
I am good about keeping the floor clear of the clutter though – and turning off the power strip that has the paper shredder on it.
I’m not good about these things at all.
But I do remember to unplug electronics before we go on vacations.

Most of our electronics are plugged into surge protectors. When not in use, not only are the electronics turned off, but where practical, turned off at the surge protector.
I learned a lesson from a Staple’s Mail Mate (a replacement to one that should not have stopped working). It had been off (at the switch) for quite a while and I went to turn it on, the motor area was EXTREMELY hot. Male Mate no more. Kind of scary that a item can still heat up like that while off.

Our office space is basically a table and chair set up in the living room, so the best we can do is keep clutter to a minimum and the power strip is tucked far under next to the wall so it’s not in the way.
Have boxes for the really “IMPORTANT” things and somehow have a knack for
finding anything else among the various piles scattered “HERE” and scattered
“THERE.”
I keep all cords put away and all of of them are plugged into a surge protector.
I try to do everything wireless so that there are no cored to trip on.
I try to keep my home office area safe by keeping paper clutter to a minimum & making sure all my electrical connections for the computer are safe.

I make sure that my desk and the back of my computer are cleaned consisitently so that the dust build-up won’t damage my computer, or make the motor too hot, and that the desk dust doesn’t clog up my lungs! Ha! Seriously, I have a very good surge protector and try to keep control of all the wires and connections to the computer, modem, etc. under control by using zip ties, and under the modem which can get hot, I use a metal hot plate with raised legs on it!
We use a UPC battery back-up surge protector to keep our home office gear safe. The biggest danger we face right now is the two youngest cats (Kali is just over a year old, Petra is about 7 months). They like to sit under the computer desk or on top of the printer cabinet and chew the cables. Of course we discipline them when we catch them at it, and we close the door when no one is home. Not only could they create a fire hazard, they could kill themselves chewing on electric cords!

I keep all my cords concealed behind my computer desk and all of the items that need to be kept out of reach in a locked drawer.
We use heavy duty surge protectors for all our electronic equipment
My office is in what was formerly a linen closet – I knocked out 3 shelves and added a comfy stool. Everything plugs into an extension cord and is hidden in a waste basket. I unplug and close and lock the door when I am finished working. I also invested in a good shredder which helps with paper waste. As for the linens: towels are rolled and stacked on a rack and extra bedding is in vacuum bags under the bed.
keep cords under control I bought some of those wall cord runns to run them in and velcro deals to put them together behind the computer. Also a UPS surge protector is a must.

My Office space is shared with my sewing machine and a cat. I have a can for my pens and rulers, and scissors . Also I close up my printer and photo copier due to they are warm while running and the cat loves to sleep on or around. She is larger then the machine!!

My computer is in my bedroom which is off limits to everyone but me. It is organized, neat and cords are put behind the computer tower, and under the keyboard tray, all plugged in to a safety surge protector strip. I work crazy hours and having access to my PC from my bed (if I can’t sleep) is great for those ‘aha’ moments when I need to jump up and write them down before I forget them. Thanks for having such a fun contest!
