This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to commentor #160: Kerrie Mayans!

On Kacie’s last birthday, she received a Shrinky Dinks set as a gift. Up until then, I was never very familiar with this creative activity. However, after checking it out we found it to be a great way to spend the afternoon. So when we had the opportunity to review a Shrinky Dinks set from Joobli Studios, we just had to sign-up!

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Joobli Studio is a boutique toy development company with a passion for art and design. We develop entertaining products that inspire kids and families to incorporate imagination and creative play into their daily experiences.

OUR REVIEW

We selected the Circus Jubilee Shrinky Dinks Party Edition set to review. When I first opened up the package, I was very surprised. I thought this was going to be a basic Shrinky Dinks set but instead found out that it contained lots of cool things to hold our own Shrinky Dinks party:

  • Circus poster and converts to an 8 x 10 photo frame with a place for guests to sign their names.
  • 32+ Circus Jubilee line art images for tracing
  • 8 sheets (8 x 10) of frosted Ruff ‘n Ready shrinkable plastic
  • 8 Circus Jubilee party invitations
  • 8 Circus Jubilee party invitation envelopes
  • 8 ball chains for making bag tags favors

If you’re not familiar with Shrinky Dinks, it’s very simple and fun! Just trace your image onto the frosted paper, color in the image with colored pencils, cut around your image, and bake it. That’s it! What you’ll have is a cool picture that has shrunk down to one-third it’s original size. You can use your creation to make key chains, gift tags, bracelets, shoe charms, book marks . . . the possibilities are endless.

What I liked best about Joobli Studios Shrinky Dinks’s sets is the flexibility it allows. Most Shrinky Dinks set come with already printed pre-made images that you need to select from. This can cause some friction among my daughters because Kiana is at that age where she wants to do everything her big sister does. If there’s only one of each image, they end up fighting over who’s going to do which ones. Since Joobli Studios’s sets come with blank plastic sheets, the girls can trace the picture of their choosing, whether it be the same or different one from each other. They can also decide on their own what kind of overall shape they’d like their finish products to be. Plus, not all the images appeal to my girls so they can make their favorites over and over again. This ensures that we make the most out of each and every plastic sheet.

And for older and more independent children, like Kacie, she can draw her own images using a Sharpie and make her very own original designs. This allows her to express her love for art and creativity.

My only suggestion would be to make sure you bake them long enough. The directions says 1-3 minutes but I made the mistake of taking them out as soon as I saw the edges starting to curl. It wouldn’t flatten properly because they weren’t cooked long enough and I ended up having to throw them away. The second batch was left in for about 3 1/3 minutes and this time they turned out perfectly.

Shrinky Dinks are a great way for kids to spend an afternoon indoors and express their creativity. And with this party kit, we could invite some of the neighborhood kids over and have our own Shrinky Dinks party!
