iPod Giveaway Courtesy of Hands-Only CPR

This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to commentor #188: Roddy!

As a flight attendant and someone who is CPR certified, I was very interested in learning more about a new first-aid technique called Hands-Only CPR. So what does this involve? It’s basically a 2-step process:

  1. Call 911
  2. Begin providing high-quality chest compressions by pushing hard and fast in the center of the chest with minimal interruptions

My first concern was the absence of  “rescue breathing”. According to this site, when an adult suddenly collapses with cardiac arrest, their lungs and blood contain enough oxygen to keep vital organs healthy for the first few minutes, as long as someone provides high quality chest compressions with minimal interruption to pump blood to the heart and brain. That’s why calling 911 immediately is so important.

However, the site also states that if you are trained in the conventional CPR method and feel confident in your skills . . . use it. The Hands-Only CPR method seems to be more for people who have not been trained in the conventional method or who have concerns about the “mouth-to-mouth” aspect of it.

In any case, I feel it’s important that everyone know some basic life-saving skills just in case your family needs it or at the very least for peace of mind. You just never know when you’ll need to perform CPR and save a life.

In addition, Hands-Only CPR has this really fun online tool called “Hands Symphony” where users can choose from a host of sounds created by different filmed hands to create their own track, and send it to their friends, encouraging them to create their own tracks, or add on to other friends’ tracks. It’s really easy and quick to come up with your own cool sound!

Stop by American Heart Association’s Hands-Only CPR site for more information.

WIN IT!

To help spread the word about Hands-Only CPR, the Ad Council is offering an awesome prize pack for one lucky winner . . . a 16GB iPod Nano & $50 to iTunes! To enter:
