This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to commentor #42: Shannon F!

Did you know that the week of September 19th is Child Passenger Safety Week? During this time, county police officers will spot check cars during drop off and pick up times at elementary schools across the nation. Officers will also be prepared to answer questions regarding your state’s child restraint laws and will cite for “on view” child restraint violations as necessary.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) latest analysis show that 85 percent of children under one year old who were involved in a motor vehicle crash were safely strapped into child safety seats. Older kids, not so much: only 24 percent of kids ages 4 to 7 were in child car seats. Nearly half of that age group was wearing vehicle seatbelts, but those are not designed to protect young bodies in a vehicle crash. Since motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among children in the U.S., it’s important that all parents secure their young children in an appropriate child safety seat.

britax seatWe had the opportunity to review the Britax Marathon 70 ($279.99) which recently announced a full redesign and relaunch of its line of best-selling convertible car seats. This new line offers Superior 360 Degree Protection with Revolutionary Head Safety Technology that dramatically reduces the risk of head injury and provides complete protection from all sides in the event of a vehicle crash.

Head safety is critical because even tiny increases in head excursion — the distance the head travels forward during the crash — can exponentially increase the risk of head injury. Head injury is the leading cause of death for children up to 12 years old involved in vehicle crashes and comprises 65 percent of injuries in both frontal and side impact crashes, according to Child Injury Led Design and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. With this in mind, Britax designed its new line to help prevent real world injury for children and make it that much easier for parents and caregivers to use their children’s car seats correctly each and every time.

Britax Revolutionary Head Safety Technology incorporates features that lower the child’s center of gravity, strengthen the child seat and manage crash energy. Together, they reduce head excursion and offer the most advanced protection to children. These include:

  • A re-engineered lower center of gravity that allows the child to sit lower and creates stability in the event of a crash.
  • Integrated steel bars that strengthen the connection to the vehicle and reduce forward flexing of the child seat during a crash.
  • Patent-pending Britax SafeCellâ„¢ Technology with SafeCells that are designed to compress in a crash. This significantly lowers the center of gravity and counteracts the forward rotation of the child seat, which normally propels the child toward the front seat.
  • Energy-Absorbing Versa-Tether® with a two-point attachment and staged-release tether webbing to anchor the top of the car seat. This minimizes forward-rotation and reduces crash forces reaching the child.

OUR REVIEW

When our Britax Marathon 70 arrived, we were so excited to use it. Kaila is getting so big and we’ve been looking for a convertible car seat that she can easily grow into.

The first thing I noticed about this car seat is how solid it felt. There’s nothing cheap or flimsy about it and I could just tell that Kaila will be a safe as possible in it. It also has deeper side walls that are lined with energy-absorbing foam that distribute crash forces, shield from vehicle intrusion, and contain the head, neck and body. With the infant insert place in the car seat, Kaila looked as if she was actually being cradled in it.

And installing it was a breeze! What I really found useful was the color-coded installation directions attached to the car seat itself that help you properly strap the car seat in whether you’re using it rear-facing or forward-facing. Of course, it comes with the LATCH connectors for those who have newer model cars. For us, since we have car seat covers we have to use the traditional installation method. I love how the Marathon 70 has built-in lock-offs under the padded seat to ensure a tight lap and shoulder seat belt installation. It definitely gives me peace of mind knowing there’s a secondary lock in place.

Some of the other features that I found useful were the Harness Height Adjuster and various recline positions. This makes it a lot more convenient to ensure your child is strapped in properly and as comfortable as can be.

In addition to these features, the new line of Britax car seats offers higher weight capacities to keep children rear facing longer and to allow for extended use of a five-point harness. The convertible car seats can accommodate children from between 5 and 40 pounds rear facing and up to 70 pounds forward facing, and the mid-capacity convertible allows children to sit forward facing up to 55 pounds. The new seats offer a harness position that helps position the harness at or below baby’s shoulder, and an infant insert is available separately to properly position the infant and protect the airway.

But how did Kaila like the car seat? A picture is worth a thousand words . . .

I have to admit I feel extremely guilty I don’t have one of them for my kids. When you go into the store to get a car seat they don’t have videos to view. If they did hands down I would have walked out with three of them. Everything about it is a amazing from how easy it is to wash to the EPA foam on the outer side for other children to the foam in the middle of the seat to ease traction on an impact. With experiencing a car accident with children its the scariest thing but having a Britax would give you peace of mind. I cant believe I dont have them, yet. I have to get three of them thanks for the chance of winning one!

I love that the installation points are color-coded for front or rear facing! That would make it so much easier for installation! My daughter is really in need of a new seat, this is a great chance! Thankyou!

wow, I learned so much! I love how in an accident the seat moves downward rather than forward and how the sides are cushioned for the one in the seat and also the rider beside. I have 3 kids that could easily fit into this car seat!!

    Chelsie says:

I learned a LOT about this seat! We’re in the market for a new seat for our fast-growing baby but want to be sure the seat we invest in is super safe and will last a long time (we believe in extended rear-facing and keeping kids in car seats for as long as the seat allows).
I learned this seat has so many things I want: Easy to remove cover, Accommodates up to 70 pounds (!), Steel reinforcements (mandatory!), the secondary lock on the seat belt. Plus so many other considerations that make this a must have!
