bink coverI’m always on the lookout for books that will appeal to both Kacie as well as Kiana. This way I can read to both of them at the same time. So when I first heard about Bink and Gollie by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McChee ($15.99), I was interested in learning more.

Meet Bink and Gollie, marvelous companions who can always agree to put on their roller skates. In other matters, however (such as which socks to wear, the buying of goldfish, or venturing to the Andes Mountains), compromise is required. But even if one sees a tree house as halfway up and the other as halfway down, these girls are always best of friends.

This is the first book that we’ve read by either author and I was very impressed. The writing was simple enough for Kiana to understand yet there was also a storyline that Kacie could relate to. The 3 short story format was perfect for keeping their attention and we ready through the entire book in about 10 minutes. It would have been faster but Kiana had lots of questions along the way.

We really enjoyed the stories in this book and our favorite was “Don’t You Need a New Pair of Socks?”. Kiana thought it was hilarious that Bink chose the most colorful pair in the store. It’s a great story about expressing your individuality and not letting others change who you are. We thought it was pretty cool that Bink didn’t take off her socks just because Gollie didn’t like them. Instead, they compromised like true friends should do.

The best part about this book for me is that the two characters – Bink and Gollie – remind me of Kiana and Kacie. Kiana is the more adventurous one who is always running around at top speed and is always upbeat and happy. Kacie is more composed and does not like to draw attention to herself. She tends to be more on the quiet side and likes order in her life. Plus Kacie is tall and thin just like Gollie.

I’m so glad that we were introduced to Bink and Gollie and we’re looking forward to reading many more of their comical adventures.
