Violated!

October 12, 2008

Remember that little incident a friend of mine had with a passenger? Well, this time it happened to me.

After the first beverage service, I was walking through the cabin collecting trash. As I walked past 14G, he put his cup in the trash bag and as I walked away, he grabbed my ass. Can you believe that?

At first, I thought that it might have been an accident because when I stopped and turned to look at him, he was looking straight ahead and watching the video screen like nothing happened. When I got to the back galley, I told another flight attendant what happened and she said, “He did that to me, too! I thought it was an accident, too!”

She immediately went up to him and informed him that if he touched another person on the flight we would have authorities waiting for him when we landed. She made her point by ending it with, “Do I make myself f’n clear?” He apologized and said it wouldn’t happen again.

Luckily, sitting right across the aisle from him was an off-duty Sheriff who witnessed the whole thing. He came back to the galley and told us that he’d keep an eye on the passenger and help if needed. I felt a lot better knowing he was there. In fact, when we landed the Sheriff waited until everyone got off the plane and then escorted our crew to our hotel shuttle.

I’m so surprised that in this day and age some people think they can get away with behavior like that. Did he expect us to turn around and say, “Oh thank you. Could you do it again, please?” What an idiot.

Thanks to our passenger manifest, we know his name and can find out more info about him through his reservation. However, now I’m going to have to go into work on my day off to do the paperwork and talk to the supervisors.

*sigh*

Like I don’t have anything better to do.

I keep hearing more stories like this and frankly I’m very disturbed by them. There was recently a story of a male passenger taping two female passengers wrists together. ???

Please do take the time to take care of the paperwork on this jerk…he and the others like him need to learn how to behave.

Ooo, creepy perverts. Aren’t you glad that sheriff was on board?
So, what happens when you report them? Does anything happen or are they just on a “watch” list for flying again?

Thank You for taking the time to report this guy. God forbid he ever get seated next to a minor girl traveling alone, etc. And GO Sheriff!

Ew Ew Ew….heebie jeebies and creepy crawly feelings as I am reading… I am SO SORRY that happened to you. Please REPORT HIM!

5

I’m sorry, I had to chuckle a little. I CANNOT BELIEVE, as you said, in this day and age something like that would still happen. What a gross disgusting pervert!

Sheila said:

That sucks! Next time, I’d just drop a cold cup of soda on his crotch. That should ’shrink him down to size’. lol

What nerve!

I bet he’s gotten away with it other times so probably didn’t even think twice about it. Good for you to go in an report it, even if it does take away from your day off. Like you said, what an idiot…

I hate to say this, it sounds so trite, but I’m afraid I would have spun around and smacked the man across the head. And I would have done that instinctively, not because I was trying to me Ms. Tough Guy, you know?

He’s probably lucky he hasn’t been belted before now.

I’m sorry you have to go in on your day off to follow up on this creep, but think of it this way - you’re forcing this guy to own up to his behavior - perhaps it’s time we started forcing people to take responsibility for their impulses.

What a jerk! I’m glad the off duty officer was there, though & how nice of him to escort you all.

How TERRIBLE! Kudos to that officer. A-hole is one lucky perp. If it had been me, I would’ve outed his behavior right then and there, in them most embarrassing (for him) way I could think of. *sheesh*

It never ceases to amaze me how base people behave. Definitely think you should report this guy!

oh, yuck. I’m sorry you have to spend your free time doing paperwork but hopefully it will help stop that man from assaulting others in the future.

OMG.. I’m so sorry that this happened to you. I couldn’t believe that someone will have a nerve to do this. Not just once but twice on the flight!! I’m at a loss for word.

I can’t believe people still do that…so tacky!

Oooo that makes me so mad! It’s awesome that there was a Sheriff right there.

I cannot believe this! The nerve! Kudos to your friend for standing up to him! I bet he’ll think twice before doing that again. That was really nice of the sherrif to escort you, as well.

Bummer! I’m glad you’re going through the trouble of reporting it - that stuff should definitely not be tolerated.

i’m so sorry you had to endure this. i’m sure it stays with you for a while. and like you said, you’re having to spend your valuable time dealing with it.

hope you feel closure on all of it soon.

oh my goodness– what a jerk!

That is HORRIBLE. What a scum bag!

Thank goodness for the witness! I think if this had happened to my niece, I’m afraid she would have slugged the passenger.

I could not believe it the first time you mentioned it and it makes me more upset this time. I can not believe the balls of this guy to believe that this is acceptable and not going to go without consequences. I really hope that the paperwork you have to do helps.

I was a little unclear, was this the same person as last time, or just another guy that needs to keep his hands to himself.

Please keep us posted on how things go.

Creepy old men.. Just keep in mind that much worse things could have happened, so overall try not to be too upset. It isn’t healthy! =)

Who do these guys think they are? And what century and country do they think they are in as well?

I am so sorry Kailani! I had my butt pinched enough times in Europe to know exactly how you must feel and violated is the only word!

I rarely comment, but I read you often. I enjoy trying to keep up with you. I just can’t believe this guy did this!! Idiot!!

Anyway, I’ve got an award for you. You can pick it up at my blog!!

Some guys are just pigs. However, I have all the respect for the sheriff that went out of his way to ensure your safety.

I am so sorry :( What in the world makes people think they have the right to touch another person!?! I just don’t understand!! Hopefully you won’t see this guy EVER AGAIN!

That really stinks. It’s plain wrong but I have to wonder what made him think that he wouldn’t get caught? Like you said, you have all the info you need to track him down.

That’s just unreal. It makes me sick.

Poor YOU! I don’t know what to say ? Was that idiot from another country? Please tell me he was and he wasn’t from the US….BUTT HEAD!

32

I do not envy your job. I’m grateful there are people like you to do it, but I don’t think I could.

Sorry that happened to you!

OMG! I’m so sorry… some people are so weird and rude. Unfortunately, now days you have to be on guard all the time… You just never know. Ugh, so sorry again.

Your post just reminded me of so many times I’ve been treated like that, too. I’m not a flight attendent, but I’ve been violated by co-workers and bosses many times throughout my working life. I’m sorry that happened to you.

tracey said:

Ah, yes. Well, you clearly were ASKING to be manhandled, right? I mean, you walked right by him with your ass at his hand level, right? CLEARLY, you wanted it.

Men have the extreme ability to astound me.

Ick.

I remember the first time a patient touched my butt, and my CNA said “Oh, he’s old (he was 56), he doesn’t mean anything by it.”

We think women have come so far in the work place, but still there are women in professions that you’re just supposed to grin and bear this sort of crap. Nurses, flight attendants, secretaries…we should get hazard pay ;)

37

Leigh said:

Also, I’m proud of your for doing such a good job communicating with your coworkers! Who knows who would have been next.

I can’t believe this guy! Who does that? But on the upside, thank god you had the sheriff there to add that little bit of extra security. And our horror at this neanderthal’s actions shows that things must be changing between men and women because once upon a time a steward might have seen this as “just part of the job”. You know, the excuse that has let the perverts get away with their actions for forever…

Oh yuck, that really sucks. How disgusting of that man. So sorry that happened to you!

HeatherY said:

That’s awful. You would think in this day and age we would be past that sort of behavior. I’m glad someone told him to keep his hands to himself.

41

Kila said:

What a jerk. Glad you ladies are doing something about it and spoke up. And hooray for the sheriff for helping out. The good guy balanced out the bad guy ;)

42

That’s just so barbaric! Let us know how this resolves.

43

Elizabeth said:

In those COMPLETELY RUDE moments, I almost feel like I wish I could act well enough to set the guy up… that would be SWEET. “Oooh, I liked that, meet me at the rear washrooms…” then push him out the door, or lock him in - that’d be a little less violent, I guess ;)
So sorry that happened to you.

What an idiot! (Him, not you!)

Julienne said:

That is just sickening!! I can’t believe any one would find that appropriate behavior. Ugh. I’m sorry you have to go in and file paperwork on a day off. But I’m glad you’re writing it up.

46

Tara said:

I cannot believe that.. my word. Why do some men have to behave this way? As if he didn’t know that was not appropriate *rolling eyes* My word! Your job sounds like it can be very trying at times..

OMG the same thing happened to me as a Gate attendant for American Airlines. There was an older gentleman that did that to me, when I commented it to the other Gate Agent, she exclaims that yeah, he’s a perverted old man and has done it to all the girls… WTH, I was furious.. they didn’t do ANYTHING? well, not me, next time he came around our gates, I let him have it. He apologized and NEVER touched any of us again.. I mean really.. The nerve..

SO, good for you guys for standing up for yourselves.
(and YES I gave him middle seats lol)

I’m so sorry this happened to you! =(

Geez. I’m sorry… It’s hard to believe that men STILL think they can get away with that! I’m so glad you and co-worker let him know he couldn’t! Hopefully she was LOUD and he was totally embarrassed!
