Too Pretty To Fly?

No, these were not the spoiled brats that were on my flight recently. ;-)

On February 14th, 18-year-olds Nisreen Swedberg & Sarah Williams were traveling on Southwest Airlines from Tampa to Los Angeles when they claimed that the flight crew discriminated against them for being “too pretty”.

Apparently, Swedberg claims that she asked a flight attendant for water but was told she had to wait until the beverage service started. Once it did, she was purposely skipped. Then when Williams went to use the lavatory, she tried to get in even though it was locked. Later the passenger emerged and cursed at her for disturbing him and she cursed back. She said she was the only one who was “talked to” by the crew.

“I think they were just discriminating against us because we were young, decent-looking girls. I mean, nobody else really on the plane looked like us except us,” Ms. Williams told a Tampa TV station. Southwest came back with a written statement and a YouTube.com video statement denying that the two young ladies were targeted for anything but bad behavior.

Stop by here for more on this story and a written statement by Southwest Airlines regarding the incident.

What do you think? Too pretty or too ridiculous?

Oh, this happens to me all the time! You wouldn’t believe how people treat me because I’m so hot in my baggy t-shirt and scrub pants. It’s a curse that some of us just have to learn to deal with ;)

Are you kidding me? I think they are the older (but not grown-up) version of the passenger you recently had to deal with.

Pretty is not vulgar language, definitely not.

Too ridiculous! Is it just me or does this new generation (sadly only one below me) not have any common sense or decency?
At first I almost thought you were going to post about the girl that got asked to leave the flight for her short skirt, but then I read it.
Sad to say, I had an 8th grader 4 years back who walked past my desk… I was about to ask her to pull her skirt up (since her “crack” was almost showing) when she came out to where I could see her legs and I realized that if she pulled her skirt up you’d be able to see her crack from the bottom. Not a pretty sight. There couldn’t have been more than 6 inches on that skirt.
Where are the moms (or dads) of these girls?

Okay, am I the only one who noticed the camera span UP this woman’s body? It was almost as if the cameraman was showing the world just how NORMAL this girl was. She’s attractive, but certainly not pretty enough to dazzle. I seriously laughed – I honestly think the cameraman (person, whatever), was trying to tell the audience something. PWNED!

There’s a REASON why vain GIRLS (because truly, we can’t call them women at this point, they are at the maturity level of a fifth grader) are labeled stupid, it’s because a lot of times, they are. Stupid, self-centered and honestly, clueless.

Discriminated against because they’re pretty – geez, I truly have heard it all now. *mumbles* dorks … poor thing had to wait for her water just like everyone else …

    Two words: PARIS HILTON

This is what happens when young girls grow up idolizing spoiled, pretentious rich girls. I think that the airline should file suit against them! And the judge should totally convict them of something (being too “pretty,” maybe–puleaze!), and subject them to 200 hours each of cleaning up bathrooms and aisles on planes post-flight.

    Give me a freaking break.

  25. Holly Schwendiman says:

    Well first,

Pretty is in the eye of the beholder and I see nothing beautiful about either of these girls, making their argument moot to begin with. Anyone who has to announce to the world that they are pretty obviously has bigger fish to fry.

    Second,

I’m so glad you shared this story here right after it happened. I’m deeply saddened that CNN would take such a one-sided approach on any story – that’s just stupid. I expect we’ll see and hear a retraction soon if it hasn’t already happened.

    Third,

Isn’t there proof of the behavior affecting the entire group of traveler’s by you pulling out of take-off line for the “bathroom incident” and even witnesses for the food/drink demands?

What a sad, sad state. Again, I weep for the future!

    Hugs,
    Holly

Am I the only one who can see that it IS a possibility to be discriminated against for being attractive? Come on, ladies: How many of us have looked at a woman who is gorgeous and done up, with a body that is incredible, and thought “she must be shallow, to spend so much time on herself” when we are actually wishing for some of that ourselves?

I’m not saying that the girls didn’t sound a bit bratty and looking for attention, but if 2 girls had came to the press stating that they were treated unfairly because they were too UGLY, and acted the same way, wouldn’t the reaction be grossly different?

Just saying, that news stories are seriously edited: don’t take everything at face value.

Uhm, is it just me or are these girls not as pretty as they think they are? Judging from the pictures they so conveniently had for the press, it looks as to me like they are trying to have their 15 minutes of fame and posing as model wanna-be’s.

I would have been embarassed to have to talk about this story as a newscaster.

Now knowing that they’ll make news out of anything, if they indeed think that it was their looks rather than their behaviour that got them in trouble, it is sad indeed. Studies have continually shown that more attractive people tend to get a better break, whether people want to believe it or not. It’s just human nature.

  41. Jimmy Jubes says:

When I first heard this story I was like stupid bitches probably work at a cosmetic counter and think they are better than flight attendants. But then I caught an interview with Sarah Williams and thought maybe the media, in efforts to sell a story dubbed “Too Pretty Too Fly”, distorted the facts enough to mislead the public. After all they had an airline with a track record.
In my interview with Sarah Williams I have come to the conclusion that it was a catty power trip by flight attendants that may have caused these girls harm, cost one of them their job and wasted the time of the FBI and Police. They were picked on from the start and Sarah admits she had exchanged a swear word with a passenger but it was provoked by the flight attendant and over with.(She and two other females were waiting for the bathroom-she knocked hard on the door. When the guy came out he asked the flight attendant what the problem was and the flight attendant said “It was that little blond girl”.He called her a @$ she called him one back.) “I couldn’t figure out why they didn’t like us. When we came in my friend asked for a water and they snapped ‘No go take a seat’ and then when they passed out water they skipped over us. And after the incident with the gentleman was over they interrogated us about it to make a scene that wasn’t a scene.” As far as her being threatening, I hardly believe anyone feels that is the case. The female FBI agent who questioned her gave her a hug and said Southwest wasted the FBI’s time.
Sarah seemed most upset that the media had portrayed her as conceded. Sarah said the media asked her what she looked like (in an obvious attempt to capitalize on past Southwest encounters) and she responded “young and decent’ and when they asked about the attendants “older and not like us”. I personally don’t know how anyone could find that offensive. I do however can see how any female who flies, has a sister who flies, mother who flies may be offended that airline can blacklist you so you can’t get a flight for five days out of a LA when you live in Florida. I think all involved are happy nothing happened to her while she was stranded.
Finally, this case is not like the girl who was told to cover her crotch because it was lewd. It is a story of mistreatment and unprofessional employees who do not know the meaning of customer service. If you did to customers at your job what they did you would be fired. And if it was Ivanka Trump instead of an administrative assistant this had happened to you can bet Southwest would have given a formal apology and compensation.
You can hear clips of the interview on the Jimmy Jubes Show at 7pm Eastern 4pm Pacific on Talkradiox.

I can’t believe all these people on here insulting the girls and calling them “conceited”.

Unless you actually are very attractive (and I mean celebrity attractive, not just I-look-good-by-my-own-standards) you wouldn’t understand.

I have had this happen many times, and you just have to suck it up and shrug it off as jealousy – whinging about it only makes the jealous ugly people act meaner.

I’ve found that secure people treat those around them quite well and are pleasant people, but insecure people are really awful to attractive women. I once had a woman interview me for a job, and the moment I arrived I politely shook her hand and asked how she was, and she looked me up and down, gave the “bitch” smile and said “I think we called you by mistake”. I didn’t get my interview, despite being over-qualified.

I have also had “pretty bitch”, “skinny bitch” and other obscenities thrown at me on the street, by people I don’t know, who I have made no contact with – I even once had one through a half-drunk milkshake out a car at me while screaming “eat something”.

Discrimination based on looks (be they good looks, alternative looks or bad looks) happens all the time. Just because you aren’t discriminated against for being “good looking” doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen to other people.
