The One With The Spoiled Brat

It was just about time to close up the plane but we were waiting for two more passengers who had checked in but couldn’t be found in the terminal. They were paged again and again and we decided to give them a few more minutes before we left them behind.
Just as we were closing the door, here they came running towards the gate looking as if they had just come from the beach. They still had their swimsuits on under their t-shirts and shorts and were soaking wet. They were not the least bit apologetic for keeping 300+ people waiting to start their Hawaiian vacation.
As we were taxiing out to the runway, one of the girls stood up and started walking towards the restroom in front of my jumpseat. I motioned for her to sit down but she gave me a look and shook her head “no”. As she got within hearing distance, I told her she had to sit down because we were literally about to take off. She said she had to go to the bathroom RIGHT NOW! All I could do was call the flight deck. They had to get out of the line-up and circle around the runway again.
Once we were up in the air, we started setting-up for the beverage service when she came up to me and wanted to know what we had to eat. I told her I could give her some pretzels and that there would be a lunch service later in the flight. She turned and walked away.
During the beverage service, I asked her if she wanted a drink but she asked for something to eat instead. Again, I explained that the meals were being cooked but if she was that hungry I could give her a sandwich now but that would be her inflight meal and I wouldn’t be able to give her another one during the meal service.
She got upset. “I want a hot meal and I want it right now! I don’t understand why I can’t eat. I’m hungry now!” I took a deep breath and explained again that the meals are frozen and needed to be cooked first. She could either have a sandwich or some pretzels. She just stared me down and wouldn’t look away. The other flight attendant working the beverage cart with me walked away and came back with a tray and a frozen spaghetti. He placed it on her tray, smiled, and said, “Bon Appetite!”
It was all I could do to keep from laughing. Sometimes I wish I wasn’t so non-confrontational.

That was perfect! I can’t believe how inconsiderate some people can be! When coming home on a plane this past weekend, on an oversold Southwest flight, 2 early 20’s girls sat in a row, leaving the middle seat open. When I boarded, there were not many seats left, so I had to sit there. Then, rather than one of them offering to switch with me, they talked over me the entire flight. Nice.

That’s incredible! I bet they “checked in” online like the day before and literally were at the beach until the last second.
I can’t believe someone would be so inconsiderate on a flight to make the plane circle again. Crazy!
I hope we don’t have to sit by anyone like that for Spring Break because they won’t be happy with our one year old son “messing” with them like I’m sure he will!

i just don’t understand people who think they are more important than anyone else or who deserve something that they’re not entitled to. how do adults end up that way?

yeah, I’m wondering what the rest of the story was…did she ask for her spaghetti to be cooked or just keep it?
I love your coworker! That was awesome!

I wish I could have been on that flight… I would have cheered
Renee
I think she was in shock that someone actually stood up to her. She didn’t say anything but we ended up taking it back and she ate when everyone else did.
Wonderful ! That’s exactly what I would have done too ! Wished I could have seen her face !
Good on you for keeping your cool. I would have slapped her while wearing my best smile. LOL. Your colleague’s move was genius. Hope airlines have a blacklists like hotels. And blacklist this monkeys. =P

i do commend you on keeping your cool. i really wouldn’t have been able to. what a pest. i would’ve given her parents an earful, too, if not a face full of lil miss gimme’s crap.
As many flights as I’ve been on, nothing this fun ever happens. While there were a few that it should have.
I do feel for flight attendants. They do put up with a LOT of crap!

I love reading your posts about *difficult* passengers! I do believe I would have slapped this one a time or two. It just amazes me how some people walk around day after day with such a sense of entitlement!

Hurrah for your coworker!!!! If I’d been (un)fortunate enough to be near this beach babe I would probably have snorted my soda all over the seat in front of me as I laughed hysterically.
I’m thoughtful that way.
My husband runs into “brats” at the hospital (He’s a critical care cardiac nurse) and he often comes up with creative ways to shut them up.

Too too perfect.

I’m getting the impression that these two passengers were older? Like college age? Am I wrong? If so, that is doubly insulting, quite frankly, because they WOULD have known better.
I agree, KUDOS to your co-worker. What a stroke of genius. If these people had been the reason our flight was delayed taking off, and then further delayed with the snot-nosed kid refusing to take her seat and having to circle around, I would have ABSOLUTELY stood up and cheered when your co-worker dropped that tray.
I mean, I would have probably caused a scene with the “in your face b*tch!” attitude. I get annoyed like that.
It’s a problem. *grin* But seriously, I have no tolerance for inconsiderate people like that, none.
LOL – this was too funny! I can’t believe how some people expect everything to revolve around them. Imagine – having an entire plane full of people circle around again?! How inconsiderate can you get! I love how your co-worker handled it – and would’ve loved to see her face when he put the tray of frozen spaghetti in front of her…

OMG how RUDE and Inconsiderate! I really truly can’t stand people like that. Part of me feels sorry for them, and the other part wants to just tell ‘em where to go.
I woulda done what you did . . . I’m nonconfrontational in situations like that – I guess I figure it’s not worth it. Yay that you had your coworker with you!

LOL! I wouldn’t have been able to do what he did either but, I’m glad someone did.
That was just plain rude of her to first delay the flight by not being there when boarding was called but then by getting up when she wasn’t supposed to, too.
I dream of seeing Hawaii someday but then I read your horror flight stories I don’t know if I want to tempt fate with a flight to the islands or not!

I really wonder what people are thinking when they let their children behave that way. Don’t they realize that they are actually hurting them because as they get older their selfish, obnoxious behavior is going to have more and more ramifications. Seriously, who’d be friends with this kid? Who’d give her a job?
And your co-worker handled it beautifully. In fact, I think I might borrow his technique the next time my son hassles me for dinner while I’m cooking it. I might just put a lump of raw broccoli on his plate and tell him this is the only thing that’s ready. LOL!
And Kailani, I don’t think you were being non-confrontational as much as very service oriented. Only means you’re a great flight attendant, doesn’t it?

So what did she do after she got the frozen spaghetti?

This really makes you wonder if this gal was indeed a very spoiled little girl once upon a time!
What a self-centered egotistical way for her to act!
I always always at a loss for words during a situation, and then think of come-backs (just like one of the other repliers mentioned)…but the frozen spaghetti…too funny!

OK…think my last comment just disappeared somewhere…
Wow, it sure makes you wonder what kind of child she was growing up…and if you parents spoiled her rotten!
I tend to be at a loss for words during actual situations like that and then think of all kinds of things later!
That frozen spaghetti, though…priceless!
Tammy’s last blog post..Acting Lessons
Beautiful!
It’s really hard to imagine how people get to he place where they think they are so much more important than anyone else. The child’s parents are to blame, of course, since apparently they’ve set the example.
I loved your co-worker’s response. I wonder if the family will complain about their treatment buy the staff…much like those girls who think they were discriminated against on a recent SW flight because they were prettier than anyone else on the flight (!) …and probably more obnoxious!
Have a great day!
Thats so funny. So tell me..what happened with the plate of frozen spaghetti, and where were her parents in all this?
