Keep An Eye On Your Children

January 27, 2008

I just finished talking to a friend of mine who is also a co-worker. He told me that on his last flight they had a male passenger arrested for molesting a 12 year old girl. I won’t get into the details because frankly, I’m disgusted at what happened.

What I will say is . . . whenever you’re on a flight or just anywhere in public, please keep your children in sight at all times. It doesn’t take very long for some sicko to do harm.

In this case, the father and daughter were traveling back home to the west coast. Since the flight was pretty empty, the girl decided to sit by herself a few rows behind the Dad. During the movie, my friend was walking through the cabin when he noticed a man sitting next to her. He said something didn’t seem right so he kept an eye on them. That’s when he saw it. He approached them and asked if they were traveling together. The man said yes, so did the girl. When my friend questioned them again, the girl shook her head “no”.

They ended up restraining the guy and told the father what had occurred. You can just imagine the outrage that followed. The crew had to restrain him as well because he was just going crazy. Who could blame him?

Use this as a reminder that anything can happen anywhere. Please keep your children safe.

The scary people are way too bold! That guy was certainly crazy knowing the dad was right there!!
My NY took his 17 year old niece to Italy in 1997 and on the flight home he took an empty row with Juliana behind him. When he woke up a guy was sitting by his niece trying to pick up on her. NY had to get aggressive because the guy just ignored him when he told him to go back to his own seat. Crazy!!

It’s a shame you can’t trust anyone. Especially when travelling! It’s easy to let your guard down when you travel.

how sad and tragic. why didn’t this child scream and yell for her father? why did she keep silent and say that she knew this man? as parents it is our responsibility to arm our children with knowledge to help prevent situations like this.

If your older child wants to sit alone, let’em sit in front of you so you CAN see them. Kudos to your coworker for intervening!

Kailani my heart is racing after reading this. So I cannot even BEGIN to imagine how angry this father was, how scared the little girl was. Praises to the crew member who cared enough to check things out–that’s the bright spot in this. xoxo

The saddest thing is that one in three girls will be molested at least once before the age of 16. There is no limit to the amount of people these monsters can prey on. I hope you hugged on your co-workers neck for being proactive!

How absolutely horrific! I’m so glad that your co-worker was ‘in tune’ enough to recognize that something wasn’t right and that they were able to restrain this sicko. That poor girl & her dad. Nobody can blame him for going crazy - they would’ve had to restrain me, too! Definitely a reminder to keep an eye on the children - young & older - and, unfortunately, we need to keep an eye on everyone else around us. You just never know what will happen!

Having a teenage daughter, I can’t even begin to blog about how scared to death I am to let her out of my sight, and she’ll be 14. What’s hard is she just doesn’t understand how crazy this world is, and I am only trying to keep her safe. She thinks I am blowing things out of proportion.
I wouldn’t blame the dad at all.

How awful. This man was probably a repeat offender, too. They often know just how to threaten a child to keep her quiet. Kudos to the man who saw and reported it! His willingness to do the right thing saved the girl from worse, and hopefully prevented the man from claiming another victim.
