Congratulations!

IU2U.org is a site dedicated to fighting childhood obesity by helping families keep fit, stay active and have FUN achieving healthier goals together. Their goal is to get the word out on the Fit Kids Act to get healthier food options in schools nationwide and just give families another option for collecting healthy lifestyle tips.

The Fit Kids Act would mandate schools adhere to the National Association for Sport and Physical Education’s recommendation that:

  • Elementary school children receive 150 minutes dedicated to physical education each week.
  • Middle school and high school students received 225 minutes of physical education each week.
  • Schools enact programs to educate parents, teachers and administrators of the dangers of childhood obesity.

Their goal is to secure 100,000 signatures so Washington will take notice and make changes.

One very useful piece of advice I learned from IU2U was the formula for determining how much water to drink each day, something I’ve never been entirely sure about, and it couldn’t be easier – an ounce of water for every pound! The site’s full of helpful tips and pieces of info for encouraging healthy behaviors and fighting obesity at all ages. Thanks!

One thing I find interesting is Play with your food. Get a workout while you’re cooking by playing with your food. Lift canned items as if they’re free-weights. When you mix dishes, stir at a quick pace to feel the burn!

I really like the tip about storing cookies and such in individual baggies so the kids don’t over eat the treats. I am lucky that my kids love being outside playing with friends and get more than the recommended 1 hour of outdoor activity. My son is 11 and if I don’t monitor him he will just eat junk non-stop. I hide everything and they know to ask before having any snacks. We also do family outings that include a lot of walking which everyone enjoys. I was overweight as a child and I want to do better by my kids.

I liked the idea of making a snack out of graham crackers with a schmear of caramel and apple bits. It kind of sounds like a small caramel apple pie. Yum, now I’m hungry!
