Why Do You Blog?

I was over at Pass The Torch where she posted a very interesting article about people who decide to stop blogging.
Sometimes it’s unavoidable, as in my case. Sometimes it’s a lifestyle change like Mommy Needs a MaiTai. Sometimes it’s family responsibilities like Drama Queen’s Momma. All very legitimate reasons to take a step back.
But what about those that continue to blog day after day?
Is it a creative outlet? A social network? A feeling that you’re not alone in your chaos?
Why do you blog?

I blog for the same reason I write: the need for creating something. It’s huge for me to have something I’m working on at all times and producing something new each day that–oddly enough–other seems to inexplicably enjoy is highly satisfying. It’s like that with motherhood too–it’s the biggest creative endeavor there is. Thanks for a thought-provoking question.
Good question. I blog to know, that I am not alone in this world.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. For me, it is a creative outlet, a family journal, but also a corporate blog. I drive traffic to my sponsor site as well as promote my book.
Very interesting topic, thanks for the link!
I first started blogging because I was reading so many blogs and felt the need to contribute. Then I kept going because I like to write. And sometimes I want to just write about things instead of talking about them, sometimes it is just like taking stock of what I have been up to or just plain sharing with others.
I guess I have lots of reasons to blog, I just feel bad when I am stuck taking time on the couch and have nothing fun to blog about .
Humour, therapy, personal journal, photo blogging, cool internet tools turn me on, my legacy, meeting interesting new people from around the world.
That about sums up the reasons that I blog. I’ve done some surveys in the past about blog management time etc. I’m still trying to work on that and find the balance.
Any suggestions on what works for you will be appreciated at my blog!!
O and I can’t believe I’m first. I never get to say that.
I’ll stop by and put in my two cents, for what they’re worth. Thanks for being first!!
for me, I think that it’s a combination of all of those things. I find it a great outlet for complaining about my life and sharing something in common with moms all over. Sometimes I get creative and post something like my Gingerbread home makeover, so it’s a good outlet for that as well. But I think for me secretly it’s a seeking of approval from all those who comment.
About Girl Scouts and GG… I wouldn’t judge all areas by what is going on in mine. I just got an earful from the Leader who dropped the cookie sale in my lap. She told us how wonderful our service unit is and how we would be silly to try to move to another one. But we’re taking this with a grain of salt as this is the same Leader who was publicly humiliated on local radio by one of the other Leaders in our service unit and nothing was done about it. And this Leader who gave me the earful has a history of letting people use her as a doormat.
I think deep down inside, we all enjoy the comments and the fact that someone actually reads what we have to say. At least I know I do even if I don’t always make sense.
I started blogging honestly because my friend, Yoshi, said that I should start one and had been hounding me for literally years. I finally caved, protesting that I didn’t have anything of importance to say. I’m still not sure if I have anything important to say, but it gives me the ability to be creative, I’ve met wonderful people, like you, and it’s become almost a joint project at times with my daughter. All positives, so I will keep doing it as long as people want to keep reading.
I think it’s so great that she takes such an active role in your blogging! I’m sure it makes for great bonding moments!
I like the on-line connection I have with other interesting moms.
All of the above. I stay creative, get to chat, and stay sane :O)
Hmmmm… why DO I blog? Creative outlet, I think. Yes. That is the answer I am going with. For now.
And I really AM at the computer a LOT with my job, so it really lends itself to being able to blog on a daily basis. You won’t be seeing me leave anytime too soon…. unless my inlaws find my blog and then I have to start a new one.
I hope they never find it. Starting over is such a bummer!
I started out blogging to create a diary of sorts.
What I didn’t expect was the wonderful people that would come into my life.
Me, too. I never in a million years thought that anyone would even find me. The great friendships I’ve made have been a wonderful surprise!Â
For me, blogging started as a support system for other moms of diabetics, then as a personal journal to share with our family. I also enjoy the social network and sharing my chaos. That I’m not alone with the things in my life that I deal with daily. It’s nice to be one and to have online friends.
really good question. I blogged about this, and came down to the basic thought that I wanted to know and be known. At first it was to share with family about our lives…we are the different ones in our families..but they actually don’t read it, go figure! So, I realized I like to write, and I like to connect to others on some level. All my friends with like interests and small children are too busy to get together much, so…I blog. My post is on my sidebar under “best of home”, titled “I blog, therefore I am”.

I think my original idea was to have a sort of writing journal. But it quickly devolved into a regular journal, and from thence into a pull subscription newsletter for my friends and family, many of whom still read it. There’s no way I’d ever write to each one of them about everything, but this way, they can all stay informed if they want. And I agree, what a lovely surprise to meet such fun people along the way!
