Who’s Watching Your Home?

A little while ago, my neighbor knocked on my door and told me his house had been robbed. Since our living room window faces his house, he wondered if we had seen anything suspicious. Unfortunately, we hadn’t.

Someone must have been watching the house since it happened after the wife left for the store and before the husband came home from work. All within a 60 minute time frame. Apparently, they had gotten in through their living room window and took mostly electronic items including iPods, a Wii, stereos, and a laptop. The thieves were pretty brazen considering we live in a high traffic area with cars constantly driving by and guest parking right across the street. Ironically, there was a Neighborhood Security Watch meeting going on at the time. What are the chances of that?

Even though we live in a semi-rough area, I never felt unsafe in my home. However, with DH gone on a trip, I immediately locked all the doors and windows knowing full well that the chances of something also happening to my family were slim to none.

However, now it’s got me thinking. If someone really wanted to break into our home, it wouldn’t be hard to stake our place out. Guest parking is nearby with a clear view of our home. All you had to do was sit in your car, watch us come out with our flight attendant uniform on, and know that we’d be gone for a few days. Kind of scary.

I think I’m going to be a little more careful from now on.

How scary! And how utterly crazy it happened while the Neighborhood Security Watch meeting took place. Stay safe.

Oh and I love how easy your anti-spam word security is to read for your commenter. Is this a wordpress plugin?

Can you invest in an alarm? With lots of stickers? Theives are usually lazy. A big honking dog deters them as well.

Wow… I worry about that a lot. We live in a trailer park, and where my trailer is, it’s pretty busy with traffic, but one time, we had come home & it was evident that someone had tried to come in our kitchen window. I was freaked out for weeks afterwards. I still worry about it. Stay safe!

my friend Jen’s car just broken into. It just really stinks that there are people out there who would rather take something that isn’t theirs than go work for a living…they consider thieving their job!

Now I don’t feel quite so silly for taking my housekey off my keychain and put my garage door opener in my purse when I took my car to get it fixed.

According to “It Takes a Thief” it helps to have your windows covered so that the thief can’t see what’s inside. Although Jen’s car had everything covered and the thief broke in anyway…perhaps it was the style in which she covered everything…or she was being watched when she did it. :(

Ohhhh I am sorry you’re feeling unsafe, my goodness I don’t blame you. Who would have thought of that?!!

We had a home invasion similar to that in our neighborhood last year, it’s very unsettling, I know.

My dear friend, I want you to know how touched I am that you care so deeply about my hurt for my daughter. It’s profound and I thank you for caring. xoxo

NY always puts his suitcase and such in the car before he opens the garage door. As he drives away he looks as if he has on a white shirt and tie. I know if someone was actually watching they would figure it out however perhaps you could put your uniforms in operations. I know when I’ve gone on trips with NY I’d see female FA’s getting dressed and doing their hair and makeup in the operations lav. It’s that old having to sign in an hour early rule. Finish getting ready after you sign in!!

I’m sorry for your neighbor. Yes, you do have to be careful, but try not to worry. It’s unfortunate that people just feel like they can take what you’ve worked for, but that’s the crazy reality. My husband’s car was actually just stolen this past Sunday. He has LoJack, so we got it back the next day, but still–it’s never a good feeling. You feel so violated. Stay safe!

Wow…that is ironic that a security watch meeting was going on at that time!

Sadly, sometimes I think it’s easier to burglarize in high traffic areas…people are so quickly coming and going sometimes they don’t even pay attention.

Not like slower neighborhoods where everyone knows everyone…

Keep up the precautions but try not to worry, either…

Sounds like the robbers had it planed out pretty well, knowing the neighborhood watch meeting was on at the same time! Do you have a dog? That would generally stop someone, at least not consider your house as easy.

It is a scary thought. I was gone last week on a business trip and I thought the same thing when I walked out with my suitcase. I do not have a garage, so everyone can see me pack my car for a trip. Luckily I had the Chief Engineer of my hotel stopping by a couple of times a day to check on things.

I think that no matter where you live, you are susceptible to a break in. There are things you can do to help prevent it, such as keeping doors and windows locked, keeping high ticket items out of sight, not publicizing recent purchases by leaving the boxes at the curb. Our neighbor just bought a 42″ in HD TV and left the box in full view at the curb! We cut up all boxes like this and place in lawn and leaf bags and don’t take them to the curb until just before trash pick-up. Some of our neighbors have just gotten The Sloman Shield, and if there wasn’t always someone home at our house, I’d get it too. Of course, the number one method of protection that we use is PRAYER! The covering of Jesus is the best prevention we can think of!

okay, quite possibly my last comment should have said that I’m ‘now’ going to lock my doors and windows. Perhaps I should correct that before that burglar reads my comment, figures out where I live and decides to pay me a visit. MY DOORS AND WINDOWS ARE NOW LOCKED so please don’t come here. :)

It’s too bad we live in a society where we need to be concerned about these things. We have a vacation home and I worry about this all the time. But our permanent residence is in a close-knit neighborhood, so I feel more comfortable about that.

I’m glad all is well for you.

That is so scary. I don’t think it matters what neighbourhood you live in if someone is watching and you don’t know it, they will get in. A similar thing happened on my Mom’s street, the house on the corner that faced the main street and the park, nobody saw a thing!! That is the main reason we get house sitters when we are away.

Kailani! First of all, sorry for not visiting in so long. I sort of took a leave of absence from the blogging world…just had too many things to do in my day to day world so I figured I would stick with it for a while, hoping to get back to blogging one of these days.
I have a new blogsite now that is public. You may already know, but it is http://www.mylifeinpictures4u.blogspot.com

Your blog is just as awesome as ever. I feel so guilty for not visiting sooner.

Now to your post. That is very scarey, especially since that is a high traffic area and the people weren’t gone that long. If I were you, I would be extra cautious. That is scarey.
I hope you have a great day :)

I hadn’t ever considered how your uniform and the knowledge that you’ll be out of town for a few days would be great for thieves! Freaky.

I would say that a security system would be a must for your situation. But that’s just me. Basically, if someone wants to get into your home, they will. We just have to hope that our homes don’t look too appealing or easy to break into.

It is scary. We live in a semi-rough neighborhood too, but we have the nicest neighbors, and we all look out for each other.
With my husband’s tools and equipment we invested in an alarm system. The back door to our garage is very accessible, living right on the corner. Someone could jump our fence and enter the garage, and get away really fast.

This makes me sad sometimes to think about the way things are nowadays. Not like when we could keep our windows open for fresh air at night, or not worry if we locked up at night before bed.

You might want to get a list of your valuables together and log the serial numbers. That can be helpful in finding your stuff at local pawn shops, etc. It also would help the insurance agent too.
