I Think My Cat is Trying To Kill Me

kaimanaLately, my cat has been insisting on walking through and around my feet as I walk down the stairs. It’s gotten so bad that I can’t even carry Kaila with me unless he’s locked up in my bedroom.

He’s pretty smart though. If he even senses that I’m about to go downstairs, he’ll race me to the stairs and wait for me at the top. I’ve even tried to trick him by pretending that I’m going to hang out in the bedroom and then make a mad dash for the stairs slamming the bedroom door close behind me. It’s really starting to get ridiculous.

Do your pets do strange things, too?

wow! that’s one smart cat. it makes me laugh (even tho it may not be funny) to picture you trying to outsmart him.

our cat, when he was more of a kitten, used to pounce on us when we least expected it. we started keeping a squirt bottle around and squirting him with water finally stopped him from this annoying habit. maybe that would work in your circumstances. good luck.

Mine does the same thing! But what he’ll do is pretend he’s going to walk downstairs with me and then dash to the left in front of my feet. Thank goodness for the railing!

Mine just lays on the stairs and doesn’t move until you step on her – and then she’s upset with you… of course if I turned on a light at night, I’d be able to see her…

Maybe you’ve got a jealous cat or one who wants to “protect” the new baby? When our son was born my male cat wouldn’t leave me alone. And then it dawned on me that he was always were the baby was. Sleeping on the floor under his crib, in his crib but @ the bottom (kicked him out of there!) & in general just where the baby was. We had a circular staircase & it could get pretty dicey there. I used to tell Ghost (the cat) that he had to go first & then I’d gently encourage that w/ my foot. I really do mean gently.

    Good luck!

One of our cats drags socks from the laundry pile all over the house. At first we didn’t know which cat was doing it because it only happened when we weren’t looking, but after a year (!) we finally caught him in the act. Now that we’re on to him, he’s not shy about doing this in front of us. Once after we got home from a weekend away — and we have a petsitter come twice a day, so it’s not as if he should feel completely neglected! — he dragged more than 10 socks from the downstairs bedroom to the landing of the stairs, one at a time.

I grew up with Cats, don’t have any now because hubby is a dog man.
Anyways I had a cat named Fuzzy as a kid and he was always attacking me and my younger sister’s stuffed animals. He even one day killed my stuffed bear my big brother had given me. He drug in a fast race up and down the stairs about a hundred times in a row in less than a couple of hours that bear, then he was jumping on it. We couldn’t get near him to get the bear away because he started jumping (still holding it in his mouth) on the workbench in the basement and from there on top of work cabinets and from there to a small space on top of a suspended home furnance.
My Dad finally got home from doing some wiring for a buddy of his on that Saturday and was able to get up to the furnance top and that darn cat had literally torn/shredded the bear into hundreds of little pieces. My Dad got the cat down, then took a yard stick and swept all the little pieces off the furnance.
We swept the bear up and had a little burial for him in the back yard.
My Dad said, he thought Fuzzy was jealous of all the time I spent with the bear. He also said he thought we ought to keep all of our other stuffed animals in our closet except when we were playing with them and the cat wasn’t around.

Goodness gracious! That’s insane-I wonder what it is…It definitely sounds like he either A. Loves you incredibly much or B. Is trying to kill you.

Our cats like to run in front of us and flop down on their backs so we will pet them. We used to do it (which created the problem), but then they started doing it constantly and we were tripping all over them and I thought we would step on them and squash them! Now we all have a rule that if we are walking we can’t stop to pet the cats if they have run in front of us. We pet them a lot at other times and so I think they are starting to get the picture.

I think you should try the squirt bottle on him…this needs to be stopped fast as it is too dangerous for you & the baby.

But I think that I have the first dog story for you…and it is partially “my” fault. When we first got our dog she needed to be housebroken so they suggested that I keep her tethered (tied) to me so that she couldn’t sneak off and go potty in the house. Once she was housebroke…it seems that the tether hasn’t been broken. The dog follows me around everywhere and gets upset when I go into areas of the house where she isn’t allowed…she’ll bark if I take too long in those areas (I’m allowed a 20 min shower).

But she insists on walking in front of me when I move around the house…yet she doesn’t know where we are going. So she’ll take off and then stop dead in her tracks as if to ask “where to mom?” I usually run into her. Luckily I was able to train out of her the following me from the computer to my 2nd cup of coffee. Since she was snoozing on her dog bed that was pretty easy…she didn’t really want to get up to follow me anyway.

Now if I could get her to let me go to the bathroom alone…

After my daughter was born, both dogs would follow me around so closely I nearly would fall over them. I used to joke that I must have been wearing sausage for a belt or something because the were right next to me noses at my waist constantly. Considering the 2 of them together weighed more than me….it was really a nuisance.

    Pets are weird!

    Lol how funny!

My pets are always doing crazy things. Sometimes I wonder if they have an Animal Farm plan in action??

My husband’s puppy is the same way though. Always finds his way underfoot. Or goes right in front of you, slower than a snail! And there is no budging him!

    Have a great day!

Nano is used to me wearing shorts or skirts, so if I wear pants or slippers, he will try and bite at my pant legs and slippers (or even a long skirt or dress) when I am walking, especially down the stairs.

My cat waits downstairs until someone’s coming up, then he runs up after us, soundlessly, and tackles us on the back of the legs! He doesn’t use his claws, thank goodness!

It’s a coincidence that the cat tries to run around your legs *just* when you’re navigating stairs isn’t it! Cats can be evil sometimes- maybe your cat is sensing that you have the power over whatever IT wants power or control over in the house and is trying to have you wacked to then be able to take the reans.. pretty evil of it really if that’s the game it’s up to!

Kailani, do you think your cat is jealous of Kaila?
