We Interrupt This Wedding . . .
One of DH’s best friends got married this weekend at The Westin Maui in Kaanapali. It was a beautiful outdoor ceremony complete with birds singing and a waterfall in the background. I was in charge of taking some candid shots of the ceremony since DH was occupied with being the Best Man.
During this time, we had a friend of ours keeping an eye on the kids as they played in a grassy area. However, since she doesn’t have any children of her own, she did not know that you shouldn’t let kids get too close to the koi fish pond especially when they’re carrying precious cargo.
Next thing I know, I heard Baby Bug screaming at the top of her little lungs. Of course, this caused a little commotion as everyone stopped to see what was going on. Baby Bug had accidentally dropped Meow into the pond and the current was taking it away as the koi fish tried to eat it. I instantly saw my life flash before my eyes and tried to prepare myself for future tantrums and sleepless nights. **For those who don’t know Meow, she’s Baby Bug’s best friend and has to go everywhere with her. They’re inseparable!** DH looked at me as if to say, “Should I try to retrieve it now?” I imagined him falling into the fish pond fully clothed in his tuxedo and said, “No, do it later.”
Luckily, Meow’s escape was halted by a huge rock which prevented her from floating away. Once the ceremony was over, DH found a broom and fished her out. Needless to say, Meow was wet and stinky! Yuck! The hotel’s Wedding Coordinators were really helpful and took Meow to the laundry department and cleaned her good as new.
Meow and a very happy Baby Bug were eventually reunited. Crisis averted!

Spotlight Comment by Matt of The Pet Haven: Those koi fish are no joke, either. I remember feeding them at Sheraton where we stayed and they were crazy. I’m glad they didn’t rip meow to shreads.

Oh the Westin Maui – what an AMAZING place! I’m so jealous! We got married at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Kihei . . . then went to the Westin to get pictures taken – beautiful place. How lucky they were to have their wedding there.
And I’m glad you got Meow back
Oh no! I’m glad that Meow was rescued and is safe and sound. What a fun story for the newlyweds to have to tell.

Oh, the humanity! Glad Meow was rescued and harmony restored:)
So glad to hear that Meow was saved by your husband. I think it is funny to hear how kids always do something memorable at weddings. My son (then almost 3) screamed out “I have to go potty” during my brother’s wedding. The rabbi made it into his talk, but when my husband brought him back, the little monkey did it once again. Had I not been up under the chuppah with the rest of the wedding party I may have killed my hubby.
Love the sweet photo of Baby Bug and Meow reunited

I actually tensed when I read this. Poor little Baby Bug. I’m so glad she got Meow back.
Whew, that was close…
Seriously, this sums up the reality of parenting doesn’t it? Even when all seems to be going well some unexpected crisis can threaten the precarious balance!

I am glad Meow is safe and sound.
We had a similar, but much scarier situation occur when Jack was about 2. We had taken his 10 year old brother to North Carolina for a month of summer camp. We ate breakfast at a hotel and while I was paying, Jack and Charles went out to look at the ponds. The next thing I knew Jack was screaming and he had fallen into the pond. It scared me to death!
What a sweet photo! Glad Meow made it home safely.

Ugh, this is why children are made unwelcome at so many weddings. As hard as I try, I just don’t find screaming children darling or cute.
