The 50th State Fair

I recently took the girls to the 50th State Fair at the Aloha Stadium in Halawa. It was a little overcast but since it wasn’t raining I figured it would be okay. I was wrong. I had no idea that the carnival rides can not operate if there is a threat of lightning within 30 miles. So even if it wasn’t raining . . . it was actually kind of sunny in the afternoon . . . they had to shut down the rides due to nearby rain clouds.

Luckily, we were able to get a few rides in here and there between outages. And of course, the kids had a blast anyway!

Even though our rides tickets were only valid for that one day, the carnival rep said they would honor them on any other day. We have about 17 rides left on our ticket but I don’t think we’ll go back. I really don’t want to pay for parking, admission, food, games, etc. again. I would end up just spending even more money, you know? So, I decided to just give our tickets away.

What would you do? Would you have gone back on another day to use up those ride tickets?

If it wasn’t too late I probably would have tried to sell them to someone for half price. At least get some of your money back. But no, I wouldn’t have come back unless it was convenient. :)

Thanks for these last 2 posts! We have a trip coming up and I have been dranideg the drive! We have some trips where the twins are awesome & then others where they scream the entire 2 1/2 hours. That doesn’t seem like a long trip until you have crying babies the entire distance : ) I especially love the cookie sheet/chalkboard idea – awesome!

I bow down humbly in the presence of such greatness.

I would have done the same exact thing as you Kailani-For my family and I, we usually go the the state fair once a year because it IS so expensive. I can’t imagine going twice in one year >.<

I think that's a very nice thing you did though! I'm sure someone appreciated it a lot :)

Despite everything, I'm glad you all had a good time! Although that last picture looks very ominous O.o

I don’t know if I would go back. It depends on lots of things like… my mood, the cost to get there and while I’m there, the trouble or ease of getting there, and so on. I love that picture with the sun in the background and a cloudy or twilight sky, the lights on the rides. Great photo! And they sure look like they had fun!

Your photos are great, even for an overcast day.
The girls look beautiful, as usual.
As for going back to the fair, if you knew you weren’t going back, I would have probably found a family with a bunch of well-behaved kids and given them my tickets, too.
Sorry you missed out on some of the rides.

I was reading about lightening recently — and the amazing things it can do. So yeah… 30 miles seems like a very safe thing! (except if your a little kid wanting to have a thrill!)
