And I was right. She’s grown into her head. She is brilliant — and normal in weight (I believe because I never put an emphasis on it one way or the other) and she’s turned into a swan.

I’m sure the same will be true for Baby Bug–in part because she’s got such a loving, wise, and wonderful advocate in her mom!

As an attorney, I am very mindful of words, their use, and their power. Occupational hazard, I guess. I am guilty of being careless with mine far too often, but I try very hard to think before sticking my size 8.5 foot into my mouth. And I am very aware of things that have been said to me over the years by people who didn’t think . . . and how they stuck with me and impacted me many years later.

Case in point: I started becoming chubby after having my tonsils out. I am convinced that either the surgery did something to my metabolism or it was the diet they gave me at the time, consisting virtually entirely of sweets like ice cream, pudding, etc. I got a taste of them and wanted more, perhaps? Anyway . . . my mother used to try to bribe me by saying she would buy me things if I lost weight. Wrong. And worse, she used to say, “You’d be so pretty if you lost weight.” Doubly wrong. I grew up believe that I was ugly. It wasn’t until I was in my late 20′s that I learned to accept that, while no Miss America candidate, I was certainly not a homely person. My face is acceptable.

Sorry this is long, but that comment just pushed my buttons!

Thanks to my Mom, I grew up thinking I had funny looking ears. I’m very self conscious about it till this day. Kind of a bummer that my job requires my hair to be up. My MIL is also always saying that Girlie Girl needs to get surgery done on her eyes since she has single eye lids. MIL thinks being pretty is more important than being smart. You can bet I put her in her place!
