Honolulu City Lights

Every year during the holidays, we take the girls to Honolulu Hale to see the Honolulu City Lights display. Here’s you’ll find colorful “local†displays of Snowmen with Surfboards, Mele Kalikimaka signs, and a Santa in shorts flashing a shaka sign.
You’ll also see many beautiful trees decorated by different State of Hawaii departments according to that year’s theme. This year it looks like the theme was “sweets†because they were all decorated
with candy, cupcakes, and pastries. The centerpiece of this whole display is the 90’ decorated tree in the middle of the courtyard that lights up with various colored lights and beautiful Hawaiian ornaments.
The only things that were missing were the carnival and train rides that they usually have. Maybe it’s still too early in the month but it was a little disappointing for the girls.
However, as we were walking around the block we noticed an old-fashioned fire truck giving tours of Honolulu Hale and the downtown area. We followed it back to the Hawaii Mission Houses Museum and was lucky to have caught the very last ride of the night. It was amazing! They even gave us bells to ring whenever we saw pedestrians passing by. The girls had a blast. We are definitely going back again next year.

Looks like a lot of fun!
I googled Mele Kalikimaka and found Bette Midler, one of my idols. Thanks for sharing. I learned something new about Hawaii today.
I miss those trips….the girls are so cute!
Beautiful pics of the girls, as usual.
Great getting a little Xmas, Hawaiian-style!
That looks like so much fun! What pretty girls.
It looks odd seeing a girl in the Santa sleigh wearing summer clothing! lol (coming from Ohio, w/ snow on the ground;)
I’d love to go back to Hawaii one day (we went to Kauai & Maui for our honeymoon). Such a beautiful place!
Mele Kalikimaka to you & your family. I’m glad your girls got to ride the firetruck. how fun.
One of these days we gotta figure out who you need to know to get dd in our town’s parade. hee hee, it’s a small enough town, each kid should be able to be in the parade…right? One year the girls from the gymnastics gym that she goes to were it in…but who wants to be doing cartwheels on the street after the horses have been through? :p
Your girls are so cute. What does Shaka mean?
That sounds like so much fun!
I haven’t been to see the Honolulu City Lights since…1993 or 1994! That’s so neat about the MIssion Houses Museum ride! There were trolley rides in Kailua last weekend to see the lights but a bunch of us ended up not going because of the weather =(.
I have yet to go and take the kids to see any lights this year…
Sounds lovely. We take Bunny around to see some of the houses that do the massive light displays on Christmas Eve as a preamble to putting food out for Santa and the reindeers. Bunny liked it last year, but this year, being 4, he’ll be doubly excited I think. he’s really in count down mode to the big day for the first time and it’s beautiful to see.
Merry Christmas kailani!

I heart Fire Engine 50, named for the 50th state!
Awww I can see how much fun the girls had – that’s what the season is all about! Whoot for mom and dad!
Hugs,
Holly
That sounds like fun! Christmas in Hawaii has got to be so strange with no snow, but I guess it’s all what you’re used to. And frankly, I could do without all this snow right about now anyway.
OMG! I love this stuff… it is such a revisiting of childhood memories.
I want to go, too!
That sounds like so much fun. From the smile on their faces they loved it. How are you feeling?
Lovely photos of the girls. I’m sure they had a wonderful time.
